Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Brewers 2 at Baltimore (night game):
After going without a homer since August 21, Boog Powell connected for the circuit with two men on base in the fourth inning to power the Orioles to a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Bobby Grich and Tommy Davis singled ahead of Powell's poke.

Indians 6, Red Sox 5 at Cleveland (night game):
A sacrifice fly that produced the winning run, yet wound up in a double play, marked the Indians' 6-5 victory over the Red Sox in a game that also featured six homers. The Red Sox scored all their runs on circuit clouts by Carl Yastrzemski, Reggie Smith, Carlton Fisk and Bill Lee, two runs scoring on Yaz' blow. The Indians had round-trippers by Jack Brohamer and Tommy McCraw. The score was tied, 5-5, when Buddy Bell singled for the Indians in the sixth and Jack Heidemann was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice by Jerry Moses, Kurt Bevacqua drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Roy Foster then lifted a fly to left fielder Ben Oglivie, who dropped the ball. Foster was given credit for a sacrifice fly as Bell scored. Oglivie recovered the ball quickly and threw to third base to force Heidemann. Foster was also called out for running past Bevacqua on the baseline between first and second to retire the side.

Yankees 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Consecutive homers by Bobby Murcer and Felipe Alou in the fourth inning sent the Yankees on their way to a 4-2 victory in a game stopped by rain with Norm Cash at the plate as the Tigers' leadoff batter in the sixth. The Yankees scored initially in the first on doubles by Roy White and Murcer before the Tigers came back with their pair on a single by Jim Northrup, safe bunt by Tony Taylor, a wild throw by Steve Kline, infield out by Gates Brown and a double by Duke Sims. After Murcer tied the score with his round-tripper in the fourth, Alou sent the Yankees ahead with the 200th homer of his major league career. Another run to clinch the victory followed on a walk to Thurman Munson, a stolen base and a single by Johnny Callison.

White Sox 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Dick Allen not only broke the White Sox club record for most homers in one season, but the slugger's drive following a pass to Mike Andrews in the first inning produced a 2-1 victory over the Royals. The homer was Allen's 34th, one more than Bill Melton's previous mark in 1971. Steve Hovley accounted for the Royals' run with a round-tripper in the ninth.

[DH] Twins 2, A's 1 (night game) / Twins 3, A's 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Rich Reese, who entered both games as a defensive replacement for Harmon Killebrew at first base, hit a double to drive in the winning run in the opener and drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in the winning run in the nightcap as the Twins beat the Athletics in a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-2. Killebrew drove in a run with a single in the first inning of the lidlifter to give the Twins a 1-0 lead. After Killebrew left the lineup, Sal Bando homered for the A's to tie the score in the ninth. The Twins then came back with the winning run in their half when Danny Thompson singled and scored on Reese's double. In the nightcap, Cesar Tovar scored all three of the Twins' runs. With the score tied, 2-2, Tovar walked with two out in the eighth inning and Rod Carew was safe on an error by Mike Epstein. Darold Knowles, relieving Rollie Fingers, passed Stave Braun to load the bases and then walked Reese to force in the deciding run.

Astros 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
After driving in a run with a triple in the third inning, Jim Wynn homered in the ninth to enable the Astros to emerge with a 4-3 win over the Dodgers. Don Wilson, who started for the Astros, had a 3-0 lead before being lifted in the seventh when the Dodgers scored twice on consecutive singles by Steve Yeager, Jim Lefebvre, Billy Grabarkewitz and Manny Mota. Jerry Reuss relieved and struck out Willie Davis to end the inning. After Wynn's homer in the eighth, the Dodgers scored once in their half and had two men on base with two out, but Cesar Cedeno saved the game by making a spectacular, diving catch of a line drive by Davis.

Expos 4, Cardinals 0 at Montreal (night game):
Balor Moore pitched his second straight shutout and Mike Jorgensen drove in three runs with a double and homer as the Expos defeated the Cardinals, 4-0.

Mets 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton's bid for his 24th victory was rebuffed by the Mets, who defeated the Phillies' star southpaw, 4-2. The Phillies scored both their runs off Jerry Koosman in the first inning on a single by Larry Bowa, walk to Don Money, double by Greg Luzinski and sacrifice fly by Roger Freed. The Mets tied the score in the fourth with walks to Bud Harrelson and John Milner, a single by Cleon Jones, infield out by Duffy Dyer and double by Jim Beauchamp. Dyer broke the tie with a homer in the sixth and the Mets added an extra run in the eighth when Jones singled and Dyer tripled.
