Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 6, Rangers 5 at California (night game):
A safe squeeze bunt by Leo Cardenas capped a two-run rally in the eighth inning and brought the Angels a 6-5 victory over the Rangers. Vada Pinson opened the stanza with a single and scored the tying run on a double by Ken McMullen, who took third on the throw home. Cardenas then pushed his bunt down the first base line for a hit to score Billy Parker, the pinch-runner for McMullen.

Tigers 6, Orioles 5 at Detroit (night game):
A balk that allowed Mickey Stanley to score capped a comeback by the Tigers and resulted in a 6-5 victory over the Orioles. After Frank Howard doubled a run home for the Tigers in the first inning, the Orioles took a 5-1 lead with a homer by Terry Crowley in the second and a grand slam by Boog Powell in the third. Howard, who was acquired from the Rangers for stretch-drive power September 1, brought the Tigers back into the game with a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Willie Horton followed with a single and Stanley walked to force the exit of Dave McNally. After Doyle Alexander relieved, Aurelio Rodriguez grounded to Mark Belanger, who threw high to the plate, Horton scoring. Rodriguez was given credit for a hit. The other runners advanced on the error. Stanley then faked a break for the plate and when Alexander stopped his delivery, a balk was called, allowing Stanley to score the winning run.

Royals 6, White Sox 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The White Sox, who twice overcame two-run deficits, were unable to do it three times and lost to the Royals, 6-4. With the score tied, 4-4, Amos Otis led off the eighth with a single for the Royals and Lou Piniella sacrificed. Carl Taylor walked and Paul Schaal then doubled to drive in both runners and give the Royals their winning margin.

Brewers 3, Indians 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers were held to four hits by Gaylord Perry, but a run-scoring triple by Rick Auerbach in the second inning and a homer by Joe Lahoud in the fourth helped them defeat the Indians' 20-game winner, 3-1. The Brewers' other run off Perry was unearned. Likewise, an error tainted the Indians' tally off Jerry Bell in the second inning.

A's 8, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
After being held to one hit by Dave Goltz in the first five innings, the Athletics scored five times in the sixth and went on to defeat the Twins, 8-0, behind the pitching of Blue Moon Odom. Bert Campaneris singled, Joe Rudi sacrificed and Matty Alou singled for the first run to end the scoreless duel. After a single by Reggie Jackson and pass to Mike Epstein loaded the bases, Alou scored on a balk by Goltz. Sal Bando walked to fill the sacks again. Gonzalo Marquez beat out an infield hit, Jackson scoring, and when Rod Carew threw wildly to first base, Epstein and Bando crossed the plate.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
The Red Sox, who were held hitless for the first four innings, scored four runs in the fifth inning with the aid of two safe bunts and defeated the Yankees, 7-2. Rico Petrocelli walked as the first batter to reach base against Rob Gardner. A single by Carlton Fisk and infield hit by Andy Kosco loaded the bases. Ben Oglivie forced Kosco, Petrocelli scoring. Doug Griffin followed with a perfect bunt down the third base line for a hit to drive in Fisk. Lynn McGlothen also bunted safely to fill the sacks again. After Lindy McDaniel replaced Gardner, Tommy Harper was safe on an error by Bernie Allen, Oglivie scoring. Griffin then counted the fourth run when Luis Aparicio grounded into a forceout. The Red Sox iced the game with three runs off Ron Klimkowski in the eighth, two scoring on a single by Kosco and one on a single by Griffin.

Reds 8, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Johnny Bench hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to give the Reds an 8-6 victory over the Braves after Hank Aaron had tied the score in the ninth with his second circuit clout of the game. Aaron's two homers gave him 30 for the year and marked the 14th time he had hit 30 or more to break Babe Ruth's record of 13 seasons. The Braves' superstar also increased his career total to 669, leaving him with 45 to go to match Ruth's record 714.

Pirates 6, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Roberto Clemente, who had a perfect day at bat with three hits and a walk, smashed a two-run homer off Fergie Jenkins in the seventh inning to carry the Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. The Pirates jumped off to a 3-0 lead, starting with a run in the third on a triple by Clemente and single by Willie Stargell. A walk to Clemente, double by Stargell, sacrifice fly by Richie Hebner and error by Don Kessinger added two runs in the sixth. Nelson Briles singled in the seventh and, with two out, Clemente hit the tie-breaking homer. The Cubs narrowed the gap with a run in the eighth on a single by Kessinger and double by Billy Williams, but the Pirates regained their two-run lead with singles by Gene Alley and Rennie Stennett around a sacrifice in the ninth.

Astros 6, Padres 5 at Houston (night game):
Johnny Edwards delivered a sacrifice fly as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning to score Doug Rader and provide the Astros' deciding run in a 6-5 victory over the Padres. Rader reached base with a double and took third on a bunt by Tommy Helms before Edwards batted for Larry Howard.

Cardinals 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Pinch-hitting in the 13th inning, Jorge Roque smashed the first homer of his major league career to enable Charlie Hudson to gain his first major league victory as the Cardinals defeated the Expos, 5-4. Coco Laboy hit his second homer in two nights for the Expos and Ken Singleton drove in three runs, including two with a single in the seventh inning to tie the score at 4-4.

Mets 11, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Cleon Jones drove in four runs and Ken Boswell scored four times as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 11-6. Dave Downs, the first of seven pitchers used by the Phillies, was the loser after falling behind, 3-2, before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the third inning. The Mets then scored four runs off Darrell Brandon on only one hit in the fourth. Wayne Garrett supplied the hit, driving in a run with a double, and three others counted when Willie Montanez dropped a fly by John Milner with two outs and the bases loaded.

Giants 7, Dodgers 1 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants picked up single runs in the first two innings and then exploded for five more in the third to defeat the Dodgers, 7-1. In their big frame, the Giants had a two-run triple by Gary Matthews and run-scoring doubles by Ken Henderson and Jim Barr. Bobby Valentine homered in the eighth to save the Dodgers from being shut out.
