Led by Reggie Smith, the Red Sox rallied to defeat the Indians, 4-3, and retain first place in the hot East Division race. Graig Nettles was a one-man show for the Indians, driving in all of their runs with a single in the first inning and a double in the fifth. The Red Sox began their comeback with a two-run homer by Smith in the sixth. Before the inning ended, Rico Petrocelli doubled and Carlton Fisk tripled for a run to tie the score. Then with two out in the ninth, Carl Yastrzemski was safe on an error by Milt Wilcox and Smith doubled to drive in the winning run.

Angels 1, White Sox 0 at California (night game):
A two-out single by Leo Cardenas in the 11th inning scored pinch-runner Curt Motton from second base and gave the Angels a 1-0 victory over the White Sox in a duel between Rudy May and Tom Bradley. Art Kusnyer started the 11th with a one-out single and advanced on a sacrifice by May. After Motton came in to run for Kusnyer, the White Sox walked Sandy Alomar intentionally to get at Cardenas, who laced a single down the right field line.

Tigers 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Although held to only three hits by Jim Lonborg, the Tigers scored with the aid of walks in the eighth and ninth innings o defeat the Brewers, 2-1. The Brewers counted their tally off Mickey Lolich in the third on a pass to Rick Auerbach, a sacrifice and a single by Ellie Rodriguez. Lonborg protected the lead until the eighth when Jim Northrup walked and scored from second with two out on a pinch-single by Duke Sims, who batted for Lolich. In the ninth, Dick McAuliffe walked and Mickey Stanley sacrificed. After an intentional pass to pinch-hitter Al Kaline, Bill Freehan fiied out but Norm Cash came to the plate and singled to drive in the winning run.

Twins 4, Royals 3 at Minnesota (night game):
George Mitterwald hit his first homer of the season and drove in another run with a triple to help the Twins defeat the Royals, 4-3. Danny Thompson walked in the eighth and Mitterwald tripled to produce what proved to be the winning run. The Royals had a homer by John Mayberry and run-scoring single by Steve Hovley for their only hits off Dick Woodson until the ninth when Lou Piniella tripled. After Dave LaRoche relieved, Piniella scored on an infield out by Paul Schaal.

Orioles 3, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Boog Powell homered after two walks in the first inning to enable Jim Palmer to gain his 20th victory as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-1. Mel Stottlemyre passed Don Buford and Rich Coggins before being victimized by Powell's poke. Johnny Callison homered for the Yankees' run in the seventh. After Callison's clout, Palmer showed signs of weakening, giving up singles by Bernie Allen and Thurman Munson, but Felipe Alou flied out to end the inning. However, when Horace Clarke singled with one away in the eighth, Grant Jackson relieved and held the Yankees hitless.

A's 12, Rangers 3 at Oakland (night game):
Matty Alou drove in four runs with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded double to lead the Athletics' attack in a 12-3 victory over the Rangers. This was the second time in 18 games with the A's that Alou had batted in four runs since being acquired from the Cardinals. Mike Epstein joined in the attack with a three-run homer. Ken Holtzman, gaining his 17th victory, matched his previous major league high with the Cubs in 1969 and '70.

Cubs 9, Mets 3 at Chicago (day game):
A grand slam by Jim Hickman, plus other homers by Jose Cardenal and Billy Williams, powered the Cubs to a 9-3 victory over the Mets. Hickman's slam came off Gary Gentry in the third inning and followed a walk to Don Kessinger, double by Cardenal and intentional pass to Williams.

Padres 1, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):

Don Gullett and Pedro Borbon, who pitched for the Reds, whiffed 13 between them. Although the victory was only the ninth of the season for Norman, the shutout was his sixth. Cito Gaston provided the run that the southpaw needed by smashing a homer off Gullett in the fourth inning.

Dodgers 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Claude Osteen yielded only four hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. Osteen gave up a single by Lee May and a homer by Bob Watson in the second inning, but the Dodgers picked up a run in the fourth and loaded the bases on singles by Willie Davis and Wes Parker and a walk to Willie Crawford to chase Don Wilson in the sixth. Bobby Valentine greeted Jim Ray with a looper to shallow left field, scoring Davis, but Watson threw out Parker at third. Bill Russell then forced Valentine and when Tommy Helms threw wildly to first on the attempted double play, Crawford scored to put the Dodgers ahead.
