Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 10, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Less than one percentage point separated the first two clubs in the East Division race after the Tigers defeated the Red Sox, 10-3. The Red Sox had a .5454 percentage with a 78-65 record and the Tigers stood at .5448 with a 79-66 mark. The Tigers settled the issue early by scoring four runs in the first inning and four more in the third. In the first, Dick McAuliffe walked and Bill Freehan singled. After Gates Brown forced Freehan, Willie Horton drove in the first run with a single. Norm Cash doubled for another tally, and Mickey Stanley walked. When Aurleio Rodriguez followed with a single, Cash was thrown out at the plate. However, Carlton Fisk threw wildly to second trying to prevent an advance by Rodriguez and Stanley scored on the error. In the third, Al Kaline singled, Horton walked and Cash doubled to score Kaline. Following an intentional pass to Ed Brinkman with two out, Joe Coleman singled and drove in three runs.

Angels 4, Royals 2 at California (night game):
While Nolan Ryan pitched a four-hitter, Bob Oliver and Leroy Stanton led the Angels' 12-hit attack to defeat the Royals, 4-2. Oliver homered in the first inning. After Ryan walked three batters and Richie Scheinblum singled for the Royals' runs in the third, the Angels tied the score with a single by Stanton and triple by John Stephenson in the fourth. Oliver tripled and Stanton doubled to break the tie in the sixth. Stanton was caught in a rundown on a grounder by Billy Parker, but Parker advanced to second on the play and scored the final run on a single by Leo Cardenas.

Brewers 6, Yankees 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Yankees' division hopes continued to fade when they lost to the Brewers, 6-4, for their fourth defeat in the last five games. Johnny Briggs singled to drive in one of the Brewers' two runs in the first inning and smashed a homer after a walk to Ellie Rodriguez in the third. After the Yankees pulled within one run, Sparky Lyle suffered a rare failure in relief, giving up two Brewer tallies in the eighth. Rodriguez singled, took second on a sacrifice and counted on a single by George Scott. Briggs doubled, Scott stopping at third. After an intentional pass to Ollie Brown, Mike Ferraro hit into a forceout as Scott scored. Bernie Allen homered for the Yankees' last gesture in the ninth.

Pirates 6, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
The Pirates clinched their third straight East Division title by defeating the Mets, 6-2, to extinguish the last hopes of the second-place Cubs. The Pirates scored a run without the benefit of a hit in the first inning on a walk to Rennie Stennett, a stolen base, wild throw by catcher Joe Nolan and a passed ball. However, in the third, the Pirates swung their bats for five runs. Vic Davalillo, Stennett and Roberto Clemente all singled for the first tally before Gary Gentry left the mound complaining of a sore hip. After Ray Sadecki relieved, Al Oliver walked to load the bases. Richie Hebner singled for two runs and two others followed on singles by Milt May and Bob Robertson.

Phillies 3, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Two unearned runs enabled the Phillies to defeat the Cardinals, 3-1, on a chilly night before a crowd of only 4,719, the smallest turnout at Busch Memorial Stadium since the park was opened in May, 1966. Bob Boone hit his first major league homer for the Phillies in the seventh. The Cards tied the count in their half on a double by Jose Cruz, an infield out and wild pitch. In the eighth, Larry Bowa singled for the Phillies and stole second. After a walk to Tommy Hutton, Willie Montanez smashed a grounder that bounced off the glove of Ted Simmons, playing first base. As the ball caromed into the right field corner, both Bowa and Hutton scored.
