Red Sox 3, Tigers 2 at Boston (night game):
Clutch relief performances by Bob Veale and Bobby Bolin enabled the Red Sox to emerge with a 3-2 victory to move one full game ahead of the Tigers in the East Division race. The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead before the Tigers began to threaten. In the first inning, Tommy Harper doubled, Luis Aparicio beat out a bunt and Carl Yastrzemski hit a sacrifice fly. Carlton Fisk singled in the second, took third on a single by Doug Griffin and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lynn McGlothen. Yastrzemski delivered what proved to be the game-winning homer in the third. The Tigers charged back with a two-run homer by Duke Sims in the sixth and then loaded the bases on singles by Mickey Stanley and Aurelio Rodriguez and a pass to Ed Brinkman. Veale, relieving with one out, struck out pinch-hitter Frank Howard and retired Tony Taylor on a line drive to Rico Petrocelli. In the eighth, Sims singled and Stanley walked, bringing Bolin to the mound. Rodriguez beat outan infield hit to load the bases. Brinkman grounded to Petrocelli, who stepped on third to force Stanley and threw home in time to nail Sims for a double play. Pinch-hitter Jim Northrup then flied out.
White Sox 8, Rangers 4 at Chicago (night game):
Although the White Sox were held to only six hits, Carlos May batted in three runs with a triple and Tony Muser drove in three with a single and his first major league homer to beat the Rangers, 8-4. Three walks preceded May's triple in the third inning. Muser, who entered the game when a sore knee forced the exit of Dick Allen, singled for a run in the fourth and homered after a single by Mike Andrews in the eighth.
Indians 4, Yankees 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Gaylord Perry pitched his 27th complete game of the season, setting a personal career high, and gained his 22nd victory as the Indians defeated the Yankees, 4-1. Perry also batted in a run with a single in the fourth inning.
Twins 1, Angels 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Deciding the duel between Bert Blyleven and Andy Messersmith, Rod Carew drove in a run with a two-out single in the ninth inning to give the Twins a 1-0 victory over the Angels. Danny Thompson doubled in the ninth and George Mitterwald was passed intentionally. Blyleven forced Thompson at third and Cesar Tovar flied out before Carew delivered his game-winning single.
Royals 5, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
John Mayberry homered with two men on base in the eighth inning to provide the Royals with a 5-3 victory over the Athletics. Dick Drago, who pitched the route for the Royals, was locked in a 1-1 duel with Vida Blue going into the eighth when the Royals broke the tie with a run on a single by Paul Schaal, pass to Amos Otis and single by Richie Scheinblum. Mayberry then hit his homer to score behind Otis and Steve Hovley, who ran for Scheinblum. Sal Bando drove in all of the A's runs, including one with a single in the fourth and two with a double in the eighth.
Braves 2, Padres 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Posting his first shutout of the season, Phil Niekro yielded only four hits and pitched the Braves to a 2-0 victory over the Padres. The Braves scored one run on consecutive singles by Dusty Baker, Oscar Brown and Marty Perez in the fifth inning and added their other tally on three straight singles by Brown, Perez and Bob Didier in the seventh.
Reds 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
The Reds clinched the West Division title by defeating the runner-up Astros, 4-3. The Reds knocked out Larry Dierker in the first inning, scoring two runs on three walks, a sacrifice fly by Tony Perez and single by Denis Menke. Jerry Reuss relieved and allowed only two hits in 7 1/3 innings, but both were homers. Pete Rose connected for the circuit in the second and Johnny Bench belted what proved to be the winning homer in the sixth.
Dodgers 1, Giants 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Wes Parker was hit by a pitched ball with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th inning to force in the run that gave the Dodgers a 1-0 victory over the Giants. Don Sutton allowed only three singles in pitching the shutout. Jim Willoughby, on the mound for the Giants, retired the first two batters in the 11th before yielding singles by Tom Paciorek and Ron Cey. After walking Manny Mota, Willoughby had a two-strike count on Parker and then him with a pitch.
Phillies 5, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
The Phillies scored on an error by Bud Harrelson in the 11th inning to defeat the Mets, 5-4. Roger Freed walked and stopped at second on a single by Tommy Hutton. After Oscar Gamble came in to run for Freed, Harrelson let a grounder by Bill Robinson go through his legs, allowing Gamble to score. Robinson hit a two-run homer in the second inning, tripled for another RBI in the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bob Boone. Jim Beauchamp and Bill Sudakis homered for the Mets' runs, Sudakis' smash coming with two men on base in the fourth inning.
Pirates 4, Expos 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Pitching in relief, Jim McKee gained his first major league victory when the Pirates defeated the Expos, 4-3, in 12 innings. McKee pitched three stanzas and held the Expos scoreless on two hits. Mike Marshall, who hurled the last 3 2/3 innings for the Expos, was the loser when Richie Zisk singled to drive in Gene Clines with the Pirates' winning run.
