Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Nolan Ryan, pitching in his first season in the A. L. after being obtained by the Angels from the Mets, went over the 300-mark in strikeouts by fanning 12 in a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. Ryan's total of 302 made him only the seventh pitcher in A. L. history with 300 or more strikeouts. The others were Rube Waddell, Walter Johnson and Sam McDowell, each of whom accomplished the feat twice, and Bob Feller, Vida Blue and Mickey Lolich, who did it once apiece. Ryan scored his own winning run in a duel with Dick Bosman, hitting a double in the eighth inning and crossing the plate on an infield out and an error.
Padres 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pinch-hitter Randy Elliott drove in the tie-breaking run with a triple in the eighth inning and scored himself on a wild throw to bring the Padres a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers.
