Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles missed a chance to gain ground in the East Division race by losing to the Indians, 3-2. Chris Chambliss and Ray Fosse started the Indians' scoring with back-to-back homers off Mike Cuellar in the fourth inning. The Orioles picked up a run in the fifth on singles by Johnny Oates and Don Buford and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich. The Indians added what proved to be the deciding run off reliever Pat Dobson in the sixth when Buddy Bell doubled and Chambliss singled. Oates homered for the Orioles in the ninth and when Davey Johnson followed with a two-out double, Phil Hennigan relieved Dick Tidrow and retired pinch-hitter Merv Rettenmund on a fly to end the game.

Brewers 6, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox, who built up a 4-0 lead on a pair of homers in the first two innings, failed to hold their advantage and lost to the Brewers, 6-4, with the result that their lead in the East Division race was cut to one-half game over the idle Tigers. The Orioles, defeated by the Indians, and the off-day Yankees were 2½ behind. Carl Yastrzemski homered after a pass to Luis Aparicio in the first and Marty Pattin connected for the circuit after a single by Doug Griffin in the second to produce the early Red Sox margin. The Brewers began their comeback with a round-tripper by Johnny Briggs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth on a double by Ron Theobald, a wild pitch and single by Ellie Rodriguez. Brock Davis opened the eighth with a safe bunt, stole second, continued to third on a wild throw by Carlton Fisk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez. Joe Lahoud was safe on an error and George Scott, a former member of the Red Sox, smashed a homer to put the Brewers ahead. Rick Auerbach iced the victory with a boundary belt in the ninth.

Royals 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Steve Busby, Royals' rookie righthander from Omaha (American Association), pitched a five-hitter and gained his third straight victory by defeating the White Sox, 2-1. Catcher Ed Kirkpatrick provided Busby's batting support, scoring both Royal runs. Kirkpatrick doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Bobby Floyd in the second inning before hitting a homer in the fourth. Carlos May homered for the White Sox run in the ninth.

Angels 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Although Andy Messersmith pitched a three-hitter, the Angels needed an unearned run to defeat the Rangers, 2-1. The Angels got nine hits off Mike Paul, who was the loser, with their first run scoring on a homer by Billy Parker in the second. Bob Oliver singled in the sixth and took third on another single by Leroy Stanton, but was out at the plate on an attempted squeeze by Parker. After the second out and a pass, Messersmith grounded to Jim Mason and when the third baseman threw wildly, Stanton counted the deciding run.

Braves 10, Reds 9 at Cincinnati (night game):
A free-hitting contest ended with a clutch relief performance by Cecil Upshaw, who saved the Braves' 10-9 victory over the Reds. Hank Aaron and Dusty Baker homered for the Braves. Aaron's drive was his 32nd of the season and 671st of his career. Johnny Bench hit two homers and drove in the Reds' first four runs. The Braves had a 9-4 lead before the Cincy crew rallied for four runs in the eighth inning, three scoring on a double by Pete Rose. The Braves added what proved to be the deciding run in the ninth when Aaron walked, Baker and Oscar Brown singled and Larvell Blanks hit a sacrifice fly. In the Reds' half, Bobby Tolan singled and Tony Perez walked with one out. Upshaw, taking over, gave up a run-scoring double by Denis Menke to put himself in deep trouble. However, after walking Cesar Geronimo intentionally Upshaw struck out Hal McRae and retired Darrel Chaney on a fly.

Giants 5, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
After being held hitless for four innings, the Giants erupted for four runs in the fifth and ended their eight-game losing streak by defeating the Astros, 5-2. Jim Ray Hart doubled for the first hit off Jerry Reuss, Dave Rader singled and both then scored on a double by Gary Matthews. After a walk with two out to Bobby Bonds, Tito Fuentes singled, scoring Matthews, and when Bob Watson bobbled the ball in left field, Bonds also crossed the plate. Bonds homered for an extra run in the seventh. Sam McDowell, who was lifted in the eighth inning, gained his first victory since June 18.

Dodgers 7, Padres 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Mike Strahler turned in his first complete game and Ron Cey hit his first major league homer as the Dodgers defeated the Padres, 7-3. In addition, Joe Ferguson hit his first homer of the year. Cey's clout accounted for two of the Dodgers' three runs in the first inning and Ferguson supplied two of their next three runs in the second.

Cubs 6, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
The smallest crowd in Montreal's four-year major league history, 4,352, saw the Cubs defeat the Expos, 6-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Milt Pappas, who posted his 10th straight victory. Billy Williams led the Cubs' attack, driving in three runs with a single and homer.

Pirates 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Blass needed only one more victory to enter the charmed circle for the first time in his major league career after the Pirates' righthander defeated the Phillies, 5-1. Wayne Twitchell, who started for the Phillies, was hlt on the hand by a batted ball in the first inning. Billy Champion took over in the second and suffered his 11th straight defeat when the Pirates exploded for all their runs in the sixth. Al Oliver batted in two with a double and Manny Sanguillen drove in another pair with a single.

Mets 3, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Jerry Koosman, who pitched hitless ball for 6 1/3 innings, gained his first victory since September 11 and only his second since August 6 when the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. Joe Torre broke Koosman's no-hit bid with a single. Jorge Roque tripled in the eighth but was stranded. Ted Simmons homered for the Cardinals' run with two out in the ninth. When Skip Jutze followed with a single, Tug McGraw relieved and struck out Roque for his 25th save.
