Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A two-run homer by Carl Yastrzemski with two out in the 10th inning gave the Red Sox a 4-2 victory and eliminated the defending champion Orioles from the East Division race. Luis Tiant pitched a five-hitter to raise his record to 15-5. Luis Aparicio homered off Jim Palmer in the first inning to produce the first run for the Red Sox, but Boog Powell drove in a run with a double in the Orioles' half of the first and homered in the sixth for a 2-1 lead. The Red Sox tied the score in the seventh when Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans singled and Doug Griffin doubled. Tommy Harper doubled in the 10th before Yastrzemski smashed his homer. Left fielder Don Buford raced back to the wall at the 380-foot mark and leaped for the drive, but the ball bounced off his glove and went over the fence.

Angels 2, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Although Jim Perry gave up only two hits and one walk, the Angels were able to defeat the Twins' righthander, 2-1. Both runs scored in the second inning when Leroy Stanton singled, Billy Parker drew a pass and Jack Hiatt tripled. Harmon Killebrew homered for the Twins' tally in the fourth. Rudy May, who was the winner, was lifted in the eighth, ending a string of seven straight complete games by the Angels' staff.

Tigers 12, Brewers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Led by Jim Northrup, who had a double and three singles in a perfect night at bat and drove in five runs, the Tigers walloped the Brewers, 12-5, to remain 1½ games behind the Red Sox in the East Division race. Northrup batted in one run with a single in the first inning, plated three with a double in the third and singled home another run in the fifth before ending his big game with a single in the eighth for the Tigers' 16th hit.

Royals 9, A's 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Breaking the Royals' club record, John Mayberry reached the 100-mark in RBIs by driving in four runs with a triple and homer in a 9-2 victory over the Athletics. The former Royals' record was 99 RBIs by Bob Oliver in 1970. Mayberry drove in a run with a triple in the fourth to tie the score at 2-2 and then shattered the deadlock by hitting his homer with two men on base off Vida Blue in the fifth.

White Sox 5, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Carlos May batted in two runs with a single in the first inning and Tony Muser added a pair with a triple in the fourth as the White Sox defeated the Rangers, 5-1. Dave Nelson had three hits for the Rangers and drove in their lone run.

Cardinals 4, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Bob Gibson allowed only three hits and gained his 18th victory when the Cardinals defeated the Cubs, 4-1. Ted Simmons hit a homer in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and send Gibson on the way to his triumph.

Reds 4, Dodgers 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Clay Carroll, who pitched the ninth inning in relief of Jack Billingham, received credit for his 35th save of the season to tie the major league record as the Reds defeated the Dodgers, 4-1. The record was set by Wayne Granger while with the Reds in 1969. Willie Davis homered for the Dodgers' run in the first inning, but Tony Perez swung a bigger bat for the Reds, driving in two tallies with a round-tripper in the fourth and another run with a double in the sixth.

Mets 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Allowing only two singles, Tom Seaver became a 20-game winner for the second straight year and the third time in his six-year career as the Mets edged the Pirates, 1-0. Nelson Briles, who gave up five hits, was the loser in his duel with Seaver when the Mets scored in the ninth inning on a double by Wayne Garrett, sacrifice by Ken Boswell and single by Tommie Agee.

Astros 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The sore elbow that forced Clay Kirby to quit the mound in the sixth inning proved a break for the Astros, who came from behind to defeat the Padres, 5-2. Kirby had a 2-0 lead when he withdrew after walking Jim Wynn. The Astros then beat Steve Simpson, scoring three runs in the sixth and adding two on a bases-loaded single by Bob Watson in the seventh.

Giants 14, Braves 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Garry Maddox collected a homer, double and two singles and drove in three runs to lead the Giants' 19-hit attack in a 14-3 victory over the Braves. In addition to scoring on his round-tripper, Maddox crossed the plate three other times. Dave Kingman and Gary Matthews also homered for the Giants, each with a man on base.
