Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Already eliminated themselves, the Orioles put the squeeze on the division hopes of the Red Sox by gaining a 2-1 victory to cut the Hub club's lead to only one-half game over the Tigers. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead against Lynn McGlothen in the third inning. Davey Johnson walked and took second on a grounder by Mike Cuellar, but held up on an infield hit by Merv Rettenmund. Johnny Oates forced Rettenmund, moving Johnson to third, and Boog Powell drove in the run with a single. The Red Sox tied the score in the sixth on a single by Reggie Smith, pass to Rico Petrocelli and single by Carlton Fisk. Bobby Grich then provided the winning run with a homer in the Orioles' half of the sixth. Cuellar ran into trouble with one out in the ninth when Dwight Evans and Doug Griffin singled, but pinch-hitter Bob Montgomery bounced into a double play to end the game.

Twins 3, Angels 2 at California (day game):
The Twins ended a six-game losing streak by putting four hits together for all their runs in the third inning to post a 3-2 victory over the Angels, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. Bert Blyleven, who was the winner with the help of Wayne Granger, led off with an infield hit and crossed the plate on singles by Jim Nettles and Steve Braun. Then, after two out, Jim Holt doubled to drive in the two other runs.

Tigers 5, Brewers 1 at Detroit (day game):
Manager Billy Martin turned to John Hiller for the starting assignment and the "forgotten man" of the Tigers' staff responded by defeating the Brewers, 5-1, for his first victory in two years. As a result, the Tigers pulled within one-half game of the Red Sox before going into a three-game confrontation with their rivals for the East Division championship. Hiller, who suffered a heart attack January 11, 1971, was out all that year and served as a pitching coach at Lakeland (Florida State) this season before going back on the Tigers' active list July 8. He had pitched 22 games in relief and had started twice, losing both times, before facing the Brewers and holding them to five hits. The Tigers scored all their runs on homers. Aurelio Rodriguez hit for the circuit following a single by Willie Horton and pass to Jim Northrup in the fifth inning. Dick McAuliffe and Al Kaline added solo swats in the eighth. Hiller held the Brewers until giving up a run in the ninth on a walk and singles by Dave May and Rick Auerbach.

A's 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Ken Holtzman, who won only nine games for the Cubs last year before being traded, gained his 19th victory of the season when the Athletics defeated the Royals, 4-2. The Royals counted a run in the first inning on a walk to Amos Otis, a stolen base and single by Lou Piniella. The A's pulled even in the seventh when Joe Rudi doubled and Tom Murphy threw wildly on a safe bunt by Matty Alou. Gene Tenace singled in the eighth, Tim Cullen sacrificed and Gonzalo Marquez, batting for Holtzman, singled to break the tie. Tenace added a two-run single in the ninth for the winning margin before Bob Locker, in relief of Holtzman, yielded the Royals' last tally.

[DH] Indians 2, Yankees 1 (day game) / Indians 4, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
After Gaylord Perry won the opening game, 2-1, in 11 innings, for his 24th victory, the Indians completed the sweep of a doubleheader by defeating the Yankees in the nightcap, 4-3. Perry allowed only four hits and gained his edge on a double by Buddy Bell, infield out by Jack Brohamer and sacrifice fly by Chris Chambliss. In the second game, the Indians came from behind to win with two unearned runs on a pair of wild throws by Yankee catcher John Ellis in the sixth inning.

Rangers 1, White Sox 0 at Texas (day game):
Ending the Rangers' 15-game losing streak, Dick Bosman pitched a three-hitter and shut out the White Sox, 1-0. The Rangers beat Wilbur Wood with a run in the first inning on a pass to Dave Nelson, his theft of second and a single by Ted Ford.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 0 at Chicago (day game):
Milt Pappas, who was forced to leave the game after being hit on the left cheek by a pitched ball in the fifth inning, received credit for his 11th straight victory when the Cubs clinched second place in the East Division by defeating the Cardinals, 3-0. Joe Decker and Jack Aker completed the shutout. Billy Williams hit a homer.

Reds 1, Dodgers 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pitching the ninth inning, Clay Carroll set a major league record for saves with his 36th of the season as the Reds defeated the Dodgers, 1-0. Don Gullett, who worked the first eight innings, allowed only one hit and Carroll gave up one more in the final frame. His appearance broke the mark of former teammate Wayne Granger, who saved 35 games in 1970. The Reds scored their run in the eighth inning on a single by Pete Rose, sacrifice by Julian Javier, a passed ball and sacrifice fly by Johnny Bench.

Expos 10, Phillies 6 at Montreal (day game):
An eight-run outburst in the second inning carried the Expos to a 10-6 victory over the Phillies. After Bob Bailey homered for the Expos initial run in the first inning, Ken Singleton hit for the circuit to trigger the explosion in the second. Ernie McAnally and Coco Laboy each contributed two-run singles.

Mets 7, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Steve Blass, who was bidding for his 20th victory, was hit on the right elbow by a line drive in the first inning and left the game with the loss when the Mets defeated the Pirates, 7-3. A walk to Wayne Garrett, double by Tommie Agee, single by Ed Kranepool and infield out by Cleon Jones produced two runs before John Milner ripped a single off Blass' elbow for the third counter. The Mets added their four other tallies off Bob Miller in the third on a walk to Kranepool, singles by Milner and Bill Sudakis and a homer by Ted Martinez, his first of the season.

Padres 3, Astros 1 at San Diego (day game):
Enzo Hernandez, who broke his own club record for stolen bases, scored twice and Larry Stahl hit a homer for the Padres' other run in a 3-1 victory over the Astros. Hernandez stole three bases to bring his total to 24 as compared with his previous mark of 21 in 1971.

Giants 6, Braves 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Gary Matthews and Dave Rader batted in two runs apiece to lead the Giants to a 6-2 victory over the Braves. Matthews singled for one of the Giants' two tallies in the first inning and hit homer in the fourth. Rader added his RBIs with a single in the fifth. Sam McDowell, who was the winner, yielded only two hits until the eighth when the Braves scored on a single by Paul Casanova, double by Ralph Garr and single by Larvell Blanks.
