Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 4, Red Sox 1 at Detroit (night game):
Opening a showdown series, the Tigers defeated the Red Sox, 4-1, and moved into first place in the East Division. Mickey Lolich struck out 15, allowed only six hits and beat the Red Sox for the fourth time this season, all in complete games. With a crowd of 51,518 on hand, Al Kaline started the Tigers' scoring with a homer off John Curtis in the first inning. A baserunning mishap then proved costly to the Red Sox when they picked up their run in the third. Tommy Harper singled with one out and took third on a single by Luis Aparicio. Carl Yastrzemski doubled, scoring Harper, but Aparicio slipped en route to the plate and scrambled back to third. Yastrzemski, trying to advance on the throw home, also arrived at third and was tagged out. Reggie Smith then struck out to end the inning. Aurelio Rodriguez broke the 1-1 tie with a homer in the fifth. Kaline singled in the sixth, Duke Sims sacrificed and Rodriguez singled for another run. Kaline singled again in the eighth and when Sims bunted, Carlton Fisk threw wildly, Kaline going to third and Sims reaching first on the error. With one away, Kaline was out trying to score on a grounder by Willie Horton, but Rodriguez singled to drive in Sims for his third RBI of the game.
White Sox 6, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Pinch-hitting, Buddy Bradford came through with a grand-slam homer in the eighth inning to lift the White Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Twins. The White Sox were trailing, 4-2, with two out when Jorge Orta walked and Jim Lyttle doubled to kayo Dick Woodson. Dave LaRoche, in relief, walked Tony Muser to load the bases and then was the victim of Bradford's wallop.
Brewers 6, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
The Brewers, who had been shut out by Steve Kline in 17 previous innings this season, broke his hold and defeated the Yankees, 6-1, behind the six-hit pitching of Ken Brett. George Scott doubled to drive in a run off Kline in the first inning. Bobby Murcer homered to tie the score in the Yankees' half. The Brewers then beat Kline with a three-run outburst in the eighth on a single by Brock Davis with the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly by Scott and single by Dave May.
Cubs 4, Phillies 3 at Chicago (day game):
With seven rookies in their starting lineup, the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 4-3. Rick Reuschel, who started and pitched seven innings, struck out 10 to match the Cubs' high for the season. Bill North hit a triple and two singles and Pete LaCock batted in three runs with two singles and a sacrifice fly.
[DH] Expos 7, Mets 0 (night game) / Mets 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Bill Stoneman pitched the second no-hitter of his major league career to give the Expos a 7-0 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Mets came back to win the nightcap, 2-1. Stoneman, whose previous gem was registered against the Phillies by an identical 7-0 score April 17, 1969, walked seven and allowed another batter to reach base on an error. The Expos backed their righthander with a homer by Ron Fairly, bases-loaded triple by Boots Day and two run-scoring singles by Ken Singleton. In the second game, the Mets scored the winning run in the ninth inning on a triple by Ed Kranepool and single by Dave Schneck.
