Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 3, A's 2 at California (night game):
A single by pinch-hitter John Stephenson in the ninth inning drove in the Angels' winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Athletics. Leo Cardenas walked with one out and advanced to third on a single by Jack Hiatt. Billy Parker then ran for Cardenas and crossed the plate when Stephenson hit his single as a substitute batter for Clyde Wright.

[DH] Indians 6, Orioles 5 (night game) / Orioles 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Led by Tommy McCraw, the Indians won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 6-5, in 10 innings, before losing the second game to the Orioles, 4-3. McCraw singled home two runs in the second inning, doubled in another tally in the sixth and tied the score at 5-5 with a homer in the eighth. Graig Nettles singled in the 10th, stopped at third on a double by McCraw and scored the winning run on a single by Frank Duffy. Don Baylor batted in three runs for the Orioles with a homer and sacrifice fly. In the nightcap, Roric Harrison hit his first major league homer for the Orioles and was the winner, with help from Grant Jackson. The deciding run crossed the plate in the eighth inning on a walk to Tom Shopay, single by Bobby Grich and a pair of infield outs.

Tigers 3, Red Sox 1 at Detroit (night game):
Befitting his status as the Tigers' veteran star, Al Kaline singled home the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning and scored himself to beat the Red Sox, 3-1, for the East Division championship. Woodie Fryman, who was acquired from the Phillles August 2, gained his 10th victory by checking the Red Sox on four hits through 7 2/3 innings. Chuck Seelbach finished and recorded his 14th save. Luis Tiant, ace of the Red Sox staff, drew the defeat. The Red Sox scored their run in the first inning. Tommy Harper singled and stole his 25th base of the season. Carl Yastrzemski walked with one away. Reggie Smith hit a grounder to Ed Brinkman, who tossed to Dick McAuliffe for what could have been the start of an inning-ending double play, but McAuliffe dropped the throw as Harper scored. The Tigers pulled even in the sixth when Norm Cash walked, Willie Horton sacrificed and Jim Northrup singled. With one away in the seventh, McAuliffe atoned for his error with a double and Kaline followed with his single to break the tie. Kaline took second on the throw to the plate and advanced to third on an infield hit by Duke Sims. Cash then hit a slow bouncer to Yastrzemski, who fumbled the ball, allowing Kaline to cross the plate with an insurance run.

Rangers 3, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The Rangers, who ended their 15-game losing streak with Dick Bosman's 1-0 victory over the White Sox October 1, made it two straight shutouts when Mike Paul and Bill Gogolewski combined to beat the Royals, 3-0. Bill Fahey, who had three of the Rangers' hits, scored one run and drove in another.

White Sox 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Terry Forster, who was not only the leading reliever for the White Sox, but also one of the best hitting pitchers in the major leagues this season, delivered a run-scoring pinch-single in the ninth inning to help beat the Twins, 5-4. With two away, Tony Muser tripled and Ed Herrmann was handed an intentional pass. Forster then batted for Hank Allen and singled for his 10th hit in 19 times at bat to drive in Muser, tying the score at 4-4. Herrmann took third on the play. Forster, showing his baserunning ability, stole second and when the throw by Twins' catcher Glenn Borgmann was off target, Herrmann scored the winning run on the error.

Brewers 3, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
The first three batters to face Mel Stottlemyre produced the run that started the Brewers off to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. Ron Theobald walked, took third on a single by Ellie Rodriguez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave May. Homers then accounted for all other tallies. Johnny Briggs hit one for the Brewers in the sixth and Joe Lahoud added another for the deciding marker in the eighth, while Bobby Murcer and Roy White rapped round-trippers for the Yankees.

Dodgers 6, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Bill Buckner collected a double and two singles, scored three runs and drove in two as the Dodgers' pacesetter in a 6-5 victory over the Braves. Hank Aaron hit his 34th homer of the season and 673rd of his career for the Braves with a man on base in the ninth inning.

Phillies 11, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Phillies hit six homers, the most by any major league club in one game this season, to support Steve Carlton, who defeated the Cubs, 11-1, for his 27th victory to tie the record set by Sandy Koufax for most triumphs in one year by a lefthander in modern N. L. history. Koufax won 27 games for the Dodgers in 1966. Carlton also led the league in strikeouts (310), complete games (30), innings pitched (346) and earned-run average (1.98). The Phillies' barrage included back-to-back homers by Don Money and Greg Luzinski in both the third and fifth innings. Bill Robinson and Terry Harmon accounted for the other round-trippers.

Reds 6, Astros 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Gary Nolan, who had been out of action since September 7 with an abscessed tooth and neck pains, showed himself ready for the playoffs by pitching five innings and allowing only one hit as the Reds defeated the Astros, 6-1. Ross Grimsley, also prepping for the playoffs, worked the last four frames and gave up two more hits. The Astros' run was unearned.

[DH] Mets 5, Expos 2 (night game) / Mets 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Dave Schneck batted in three runs with a homer in the first game and Ken Boswell drove in three, including the winning marker in the 12th inning of the second game as the Mets defeated the Expos in a twi-night doubleheader, 5-2 and 4-3. Tom Seaver gained his 21st victory in the opener. In the sixth inning, Wayne Garrett tripled and Boswell singled for one run before John Milner walked and Schneck smashed his homer. Ron Fairly and Jim Fairey hit round-trippers for the Expos. In the nightcap, the Mets scored their winning run in the 12th when Garrett doubled and Boswell singled.

Pirates 6, Cardinals 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Steve Blass pronounced himself ready for the playoffs sifter testing his injured elbow for two innings in the Pirates' 6-2 win over the Cardinals. Taking over from Bob Moose in the sixth, Blass retired the side but gave up a run on a single and three straight walks in the seventh. Ramon Hernandez hurled the last two frames. Richie Hebner batted in two runs for the Bucs with a homer and sacrifice fly. Al Oliver also accounted for two runs with a double.

Giants 7, Padres 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Five innings of scoreless relief pitching by Steve Stone, who allowed only three singles, featured the Giants' 7-4 victory over the Padres. Enzo Hernandez hit a triple and homer as the Padres took a 3-0 lead at the expense of Jim Willoughby. The Giants pulled even in the third, fell behind again in the fourth and then took command with a three-run burst in their half. Singles by Gary Thomasson and Chris Arnold and a double by Bobby Bonds produced the tying tally. Tito Fuentes hit a sacrifice fly to send the Giants ahead and another run followed on a balk by Mike Corkins.
