Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 3, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Opening their home season before a crowd of 17,028, the Yankees were victimized by three of their former players, plus an ex-Mets' pitcher, and lost to the Indians, 3-1. Rusty Torres, John Ellis and Charlie Spikes, who were traded to the Indians during the winter, collected six hits among them. Brent Strom, whom the Indians obtained from the Mets, hurled the route and posted his first major league victory. Torres doubled to drive in the Tribe's initial run in the third inning. A single by Chris Chambliss, error by Graig Nettles and single by Ellis broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Doubles by Leo Cardenas and Torres added the clinching marker in the ninth.

Reds 8, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
In an action-packed ninth inning, the Reds broke a tie with four runs and then stood off a three-run rally by the Braves to gain an 8-7 victory. Marty Perez hit a homer with two men on base for the Braves and Johnny Bench connected with one aboard for the Reds to help forge a 4-4 tie. In the ninth, Phil Gagliano started the Reds' outburst with a single and when Pete Rose bunted, both runners were safe on a late throw to second. Bobby Tolan singled to drive in pinch-runner Gene Locklear. After Bench walked to load the bases, two runs scored on a single by Tony Perez. Cesar Geronimo followed with a sacrifice fly to plate what proved to be the winning run. In the Braves' half, three singles and two errors produced three runs with one out. Pedro Borbon, replacing Clay Carroll with a two-ball count on Perez, completed the walk charged to Carroll before ending the Braves' rally by striking out Oscar Brown and getting Ralph Garr on a grounder.

Astros 4, Dodgers 1 at Houston (night game):
Jerry Reuss pitched a five-hitter and also drove in the tie-breaking run with a single in the eighth inning as the Astros opened their home season with a 4-1 victory over the Dodgers before a crowd of 28,399 in the Astrodome. Doug Rader walked in the eighth, moved to second on a sacrifice by Larry Howard and advanced to third after Roger Metzger flied out deep to center field. Manager Leo Durocher elected to let Reuss bat for himself and the southpaw came through with his run-scoring single off Charlie Hough, who was pitching in relief of Claude Osteen. Jim Wynn then came to the plate and smashed a two-run homer to clinch the victory.

Giants 2, Padres 1 at San Francisco (day game):
A homer by Chris Speier in the fifth inning lifted the Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Padres behind the four-hit hurling of Ron Bryant. The Padres picked up an unearned run in the first inning and the Giants tied the score with doubles by Bobby Bonds and Tito Fuentes in the third before Speier hit his homer to win the Giants' home opener before a crowd of 18,650 at Candlestick Park.
