Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Twins 2 at California (night game):
Two former Dodgers, Bill Singer and Bobby Valentine, combined to lead the Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Twins. Singer made his debut in an Angels' uniform by pitching a six-hitter and striking out 10. Valentine provided the winning margin with a single that drove in two runs in the fifth inning.

Royals 12, Rangers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Although the temperature was down to 39 degrees, a crowd of 39,464 turned out for the opening of new Royals Stadium and saw the Kaycee crew trounce the Rangers, 12-1. The Royals piled up 11 hits, including a single and homer by John Mayberry, who drove in four runs. Paul Splittorff, who pitched the route for the Royals, lost his bid for a shutout when Jeff Burroughs homered for the Rangers' run with one out in the ninth inning.

Astros 4, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
Manager Leo Durocher's decision to let Jim Crawford bat for himself in the 12th inning paid off when the rookie reliever drove in a run with a two-out double to defeat the Dodgers, 4-3. The Dodgers broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the 10th on singles by Ken McMullen, Von Joshua and Lee Lacy, but Lee May put the Astros back in the game with a homer in their half. Doug Rader beat out an infield hit in the 12th and was forced at second when Johnny Edwards failed in a sacrifice attempt. After Roger Metzger fouled out, Crawford, batting for the first time in his major league career, smashed a double to the left-center field wall and Edwards hot-footed it home from first to score the winning run.

Phillies 7, Expos 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
With Steve Carlton pitching, the Phillies drew 40,804 for their home opener at Veterans Stadium and defeated the Expos, 7-5. The game was played in 40-degree weather with wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour. The Phillies used two walks, a single by Carlton, three errors and a sacrifice fly by Deron Johnson to score four runs in the third inning. The Expos came back with three runs on four hits and a wild pitch in the fourth, but Cesar Tovar walked for the Phillies in the fifth and Willie Montanez smashed a homer.

Giants 11, Padres 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants exploded for six runs in the first inning, three scoring on a triple by Ed Goodson and two on a double by Juan Marichal, to embark on an 11-2 victory over the Padres. Marichal was hit just below the right knee by a line drive off the bat of Enzo Hernandez, the Padres' leafoff batter, but stayed around to pitch five innings and receive credit for his second victory of the season. The veteran righthander did not win his second game last year until June 2.
