Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan, winning his second straight complete game, allowed only five hits and struck out 11 while pitching the Angels to a 4-1 victory over the Twins. Vada Pinson homered in the first inning and drove in another run with a single in the third before the Angels wrapped things up for Ryan with two tallies in the fifth on a single by Ken Berry, double by Jim Spencer and single by Bobby Valentine.

A's 12, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Vida Blue, who won 24 games in 1971 but was a comparative bust after holding out last year, made his first start of the season and pitched the Athletics to a 12-2 victory over the White Sox. The A's knocked out Wilbur Wood in the sixth inning after scoring five of their runs on six hits, including a homer by Joe Rudi. Steve Stone, who replaced Wood, also was kayoed in the eighth when the A's piled up six runs. Stone walked three batters and gave up two singles for three runs. Denny O'Toole relieved and was tagged for a three-run homer by Angel Mangual. Sal Bando also homered off O'Toole in the ninth.

Orioles 3, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
Don Baylor and designated hitter Tommy Davis, who combined hits for a run in the seventh inning, came through again in the 12th when the Orioles scored twice to defeat the Tigers, 3-1. Baylor opened the 12th with a double and counted the tie-breaking run on a two-bagger by Davis. Merv Rettenmund followed with a single for an extra tally. Norm Cash had homered in the second for the Tigers, who disappointed their home opening crowd of 46,389. The game had been delayed one day by snow and cold weather and was played in 39-degree temperature.

Royals 9, Rangers 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Starting with a three-run homer by John Mayberry in the first inning, the Royals batted their way to a 9-6 victory over the Rangers. Mayberry's smash followed passes to Freddie Patek and Cookie Rojas. Lou Piniella doubled and Paul Schaal singled for another run before the inning ended. Jerry May batted in two runs with a triple in the third inning. Patek scored May with a sacrifice fly and accounted for another RBI with a single in the seventh.

Yankees 4, Indians 0 at New York (day game):
With Mel Stottlemyre pitching a two-hitter, the Yankees shut out the Indians, 4-0, for their first victory of the season after four defeats. A double by Bobby Murcer and single by Graig Nettles in the second inning gave Stottlemyre the only run that he needed, but the Yankees added a tally in the fourth and iced their victory when designated hitter Johnny Callison drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the eighth.

Reds 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Reds tagged Don Sutton for two runs in the first inning and added back-to-back homers by Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo in the fourth to defeat the Dodgers, 4-1, to spoil the Los Angeles home opener before a crowd of 24,755.

Braves 8, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Hank Aaron, resuming his drive to break Babe Ruth's career record, smashed a three-run homer for his first hit of the season to mark the Braves' 8-1 victory over the Padres. Ralph Garr and Rod Gilbreath singled in the sixth inning before Aaron connected for the circuit off Rich Troedson. The homer was his 674th, leaving him 40 shy of Ruth's mark. The Braves piled up a total of 15 hits in the game, including four singles by Davey Johnson and a homer by Darrell Evans in the ninth inning.

Giants 5, Astros 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Willie McCovey homered with Chris Speier on base in the ninth inning to carry the Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Astros. The Giants also had a homer by Ed Goodson, while Jim Wynn hit two and Johnny Edwards one for the Astros. Chris Speier walked in the ninth and the Astros then brought in southpaw Mike Cosgrove to face McCovey in a move that failed when the lefthanded slugger hit his homer.

Mets 5, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
A brilliant defensive play by Felix Millan took the edge off a Cardinals' rally in the ninth inning and enabled the Mets to emerge with a 5-4 victory. Millan made a backhanded stop of a smash by Lou Brock behind second base for a forceout and, as a result, the Cardinals scored only one run on a single by Ted Sizemore before the rally ended. Millan also joined with John Milner in leading the Mets' attack. Each singled in the first inning when the Mets scored two runs. Milner added a homer in the third. After Duffy Dyer singled in the fifth, Millan tripled and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a passed ball by Ted Simmons.
