Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, A's 3 at Chicago (day game):
Ken Henderson hit a grand slam for his first A. L. homer to lift the White Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Athletics. Catfish Hunter, pitching for the A's with a 3-2 lead, was lifted in the eighth inning after giving up a single to Pat Kelly. Darold Knowles relieved and walked Carlos May. Rollie Fingers took over and struck out Dick Allen before passing Bill Melton to load the bases. Henderson followed with his grand slam on a 3-and-2 pitch.

Orioles 1, Tigers 0 at Detroit (day game):
An error by Mickey Lolich in the 10th inning resulted in the Tiger lefthander's 1-0 loss to the Orioles. Mark Belanger singled in the overtime stanza and stole second. Merv Rettenmund walked. When Bobby Grich bunted, Lolich threw wildly to third and Belanger scored. Dave McNally, pitching for the Orioles, allowed only one hit until the Tigers' half of the 10th when singles by Willie Horton and Tony Taylor helped load the bases with two out. Orlando Pena relieved and got the final out to save the game.

Rangers 4, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Allowing only three singles, Dick Bosman posted the Rangers' first victory of the season, beating the Royals, 4-0. Two of the Rangers' runs off Wayne Simpson came on passes with the bases loaded, one to Dick Billings in the first inning and other to Elliott Maddox in the eighth. The Rangers had lost their first three games of the season.

Yankees 5, Indians 0 at New York (day game):
Following the example of Mel Stottlemyre in the previous day's game, Steve Kline pitched the Yankees' second straight two-hitter and shut out the Indians, 4-0. The Yankees decided the outcome against Dick Tidrow with two runs in the first inning. After a pair of walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases, Graig Nettles drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Ron Blomberg accounted for the other with a single.

Reds 5, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
After a shaky start, Jack Billingham steadied and pitched the Reds to a 5-2 victory over the Dodgers, who went down to their fourth straight defeat and sixth in seven games. Billingham gave up a run in the first inning and loaded the bases with one away in the second, but worked his way out of that trouble. The Reds then took the lead with two runs in the third. Pete Rose walked, Joe Morgan doubled and Bobby Tolan singled to score Rose. Morgan crossed the plate when Johnny Bench grounded into a double play.

Expos 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jorge Roque hit the first grand slam of his major league career to power the Expos to a 5-3 victory over the Phillles. Jim Lonborg, starting for the Phillies, hit Ron Hunt with a pitch to open the game and, with two out, walked Ron Fairly and Ken Singleton to load the bases for Roque's slam. Coco Laboy followed with a solo swat to cap the Expos scoring.

Pirates 6, Cubs 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Playing in near-freezing weather, the Pirates got four-hit pitching from Bob Moose and shut out the Cubs, 6-0. The crowd of 3,764 was a record low for a game at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pirates backed Moose with homers by Manny Sanguillen and Milt May.

Braves 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Hank Aaron hit his second homer in as many games and the 675th of his career to help the Braves defeat the Padres, 3-2. The Braves picked up a run in the second inning on singles by Dusty Baker and Marty Perez around a walk to Darrell Evans before Aaron hit his homer in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. The Braves added what proved to be the winning run in the seventh on a single by Evans, pass to Davey Johnson and single by Perez.

Giants 9, Astros 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Willie McCovey hit two homers in one inning, tying a major league record, during an eight-run outburst by the Giants in a 9-3 victory over the Astros. McCovey led off the fourth with a round-tripper. Garry Maddox singled and, with one out, Gary Thomasson also hit for the circuit. Dave Rader doubled, Tom Bradley singled and Bobby Bonds doubled for another run to chase Ken Forsch. After Jim Crawford relieved, Bradley scored on a wild pitch. Tito Fuentes went out, but Chris Speier walked and McCovey, coming to bat again, hit his second homer of the inning to drive in three runs.

Mets 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (day game):
The Mets scored two runs in the first inning with the aid of an error by Bob Gibson and defeated the Cardinals, 2-1. Bud Harrelson led off with a pop double and when Felix Millan bunted, Gibson bobbled the ball. John Milner singled to score Harrelson. After Rusty Staub rolled out, Cleon Jones hit a sacrifice fly to produce what proved to be the winning run. Jose Cruz homered in the seventh for the Cardinals' run off Tom Seaver, who needed help from Phil Hennigan to preserve his victory. Hennigan retired Cruz on a pop fly after taking over with two men on base in the eighth.
