Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Yankees 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Earl Williams hit his first A. L. homer, connecting with a man on base in the eighth inning, to power the Orioles to a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. Dave McNally, who pitched a four-hitter, won his third straight game, but the lefthander was losing, 2-1, until the eighth when the Orioles rallied. Merv Rettenmund singled and stopped at third on a double by Bobby Grich. After Sparky Lyle replaced Steve Kline on the mound for the Yankees, Boog Powell hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the tying run and Williams followed with his winning homer.

Tigers 6, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox smashed three homers, giving them a total of seven in two days, but they were defeated again by the Tigers, 6-3. Carlton Fisk homered for the Red Sox in the second inning and then joined with Rico Petrocelli in hitting back-to-back blows in the seventh. Norm Cash and Al Kaline connected for the Tigers, Kaline's clout coming with a man on base. Gates Brown hit a double and single as the Tigers' designated hitter and scored two runs.

White Sox 10, Rangers 5 at Chicago (day game):
Bill Melton belted the 100th homer of his major league career to mark a 16-hit attack by the White Sox in a 10-5 victory over the Rangers. After the White Sox scored three unearned runs on two errors in the second inning, Dick Allen singled and Melton hit his homer in the fifth. The White Sox went on to add three more runs before the inning ended on a double by Mike Andrews, walk to Ed Herrmann, single by Jorge Orta, another pass to Eddie Leon and single by Pat Kelly. Dave Nelson drove in all of the Rangers' runs with a pair of homers.

Indians 7, Brewers 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Four unearned runs in the second inning, resulting from a throwing error by Bill Parsons, enabled the Indians to defeat the Brewers, 7-3. Charlie Spikes walked to open the inning and stopped at second on a single by Dave Duncan. George Hendrick bounced to Parsons, who threw wildly to third, Spikes and Duncan scoring on the error. Parsons then retired the next two batters, but Oscar Gamble singled to drive in Hendrick and Jerry Kenney tripled to score Gamble.

Royals 5, A's 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Gene Garber received a winning reward for great relief pitching when the Royals scored in the 14th inning to defeat the Athletics, 5-4. for their fourth straight victory. Garber pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings on a yield of only two hits. In the 14th, Freddie Patek singled, Amos Otis walked and, with two out, Hal McRae decided the game with a single.

Twins 10, Angels 5 at Minnesota (day game):
Danny Walton, pinch-hitting for designated hitter Tony Oliva, came through with a grand-slam homer in the seventh inning to trigger an eight-run explosion that propelled the Twins to a 10-5 victory over the Angels. With southpaw Steve Barber on the mound for the Angels, manager Frank Quilici played the percentages, sending righthanded-hitting Walton to the plate in place of lefthanded-hitting Oliva.

Dodgers 7, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
With homer help from Willie Davis and Ron Cey, Andy Messersmith pitched the Dodgers past the Astros, 7-2, to record his first N. L. victory. Davis connected for the circuit with a man on base in the first inning and Cey hit his homer with two aboard in the fifth.

Phillies 9, Expos 6 at Montreal (day game):
After falling behind, 6-1, the Phillies rallied for four runs in the seventh inning and four more after two were out in the eighth to defeat the Expos, 9-6. The Phillies picked up their runs in the seventh on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, a single by Bill Robinson and double by Cesar Tovar. With two away in the eighth, Mike Anderson singled and counted the tying tally on a triple by Mike Ryan. Terry Harmon walked and Tommy Hutton followed with a pinch-double, driving in Ryan and Harmon. A single by Larry Bowa plated Hutton with the final run.

Cubs 1, Mets 0 at New York (day game):
Fergie Jenkins pitched a two-hitter and Rick Monday smashed a homer off Tom Seaver in the fourth inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 victory over the Mets.

Reds 3, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
The hitting of Joe Morgan and Dave Concepcion enabled Ross Grimsley to pitch the Reds to a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Grimsley yielded eight hits, while the Reds collected only six. However, in the sixth inning, Morgan singled, Bobby Tolan sacrificed and Concepcion singled for the Reds' first run. Then, in the seventh, after a two-out walk to Pete Rose, Morgan homered to clinch the decision.

[DH] Giants 15, Braves 2 (night game) / Giants 2, Braves 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Piling up 21 hits, the Giants trounced the Braves, 15-2, in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before adding a 2-0 victory in the second game on only six hits. Chris Speier drove in four runs with two doubles and two singles in the Giants' romp. Ed Goodson hit four singles, Tito Fuentes contributed a homer and double and Dave Rader chipped in with a double and single. Tom Bradley, who was hit on the right ankle by a line drive in the third inning, continued on the mound through the fifth before leaving the game with credit for the victory. In the nightcap, Ron Bryant and Randy Moffitt combined to pitch the shutout. Bryant was removed after walking two batters with two out in the eighth inning. A single by Ed Goodson, double by Dave Kingman and single by Garry Maddox produced the Giants' initial run in the second and Bobby Bonds homered for their other tally in the third.

Pirates 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The Pirates, after scoring three runs in the first, were forced to travel 14 innings before defeating the Cardinals, 4-3. Three singles, together with a wild throw by Bernie Carbo and wild pitch by Bob Gibson, gave the Pirates their runs in the first. After the Cardinals sent the game into overtime, Gene Alley drew a walk from Alan Foster in the 14th, Gene Clines sacrificed and Dave Cash singled to drive in the winning run.
