Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 3, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
In a duel of previously unbeaten pitchers, Joe Coleman gained his fourth straight victory when the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 3-1. Dave McNally, who had won three games, was a loser for the first time this season. The Tigers scored their initial run in the fourth inning when Willie Horton was safe on an error by Brooks Robinson and Frank Howard doubled. Mickey Stanley doubled in the fifth, took third on a safe bunt by Ed Brinkman and counted on an infield out by Tony Taylor. Earl Williams homered for the Orioles' run in the sixth, but Horton countered with a circuit clout in the eighth to clinch the Tigers' triumph.

Red Sox 11, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Four homers, including two by designated hitter Orlando Cepeda, who drove in four runs, helped the Red Sox snap their six-game losing streak with an 11-5 victory over the Indians. Cepeda hit his first homer with two aboard in the first inning when the Red Sox scored five runs. Cepeda and Rico Petrocelli homered in succession in the seventh and Tommy Harper hit for the circuit with a man on base in the eighth. Rusty Torres and Oscar Gamble rapped round-trippers for the Indians.

Twins 5, Rangers 4 at Minnesota (day game):
A two-run rally in ninth inning brought the Twins a 5-4 victory over the Rangers. Rico Carty hit a three-run homer for the Rangers in the first inning, but the Twins came back with the tying trio in the second. Tony Oliva was hit by a pitch and Bobby Darwin homered. After two out, Jerry Terrell singled, stole second and scored on a double by Jim Holt. The Rangers went ahead, 4-3, in the sixth on a homer by Alex Johnson. Danny Walton singled to start the Twins' rally in the ninth, Darwin walked and Terrell singled to tie the score. After a pass to Danny Thompson, Holt singled to drive in the winning run.

Angels 4, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Crossing up the Athletics' strategy, Jeff Torborg knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning for the Angels' key hit in a 4-2 victory. Frank Robinson opened the stanza with a single and Bob Oliver walked. After a sacrifice by Leroy Stanton, Ken Berry struck out. The A's then decided to walk Al Gallagher intentionally to get at Torborg, who wrecked the move with his double. Sandy Alomar followed with a single to add another run.

Cubs 10, Pirates 9 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs pounded out 15 hits, including nine in the first inning, and held a 10-8 lead over the Pirates when darkness forced the suspension of the game after six innings. The Cubs' initial outburst was good for six runs and started with a homer by Rick Monday. Glenn Beckert, Billy Williams and Joe Pepitone followed with singles. Ron Santo and Jose Cardenal doubled and Don Kessinger and Randy Hundley singled to make it eight hits in a row before Fergie Jenkins struck out. Monday, up for the second time, singled and Beckert then ended the inning by grounding into a double play. After the Cubs' outburst, rain delayed the game for one hour, 27 minutes. As a result, darkness caught up with the contest and it was completed on the Pirates' next visit to Chicago on July 26.

Braves 5, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Braves ended their seven-game losing streak by defeating the Reds, 5-4, with an unearned run in the ninth inning. Johnny Oates hit a three-run homer for the Braves in the first. Dusty Baker batted in a run with a single in the sixth to put the Braves ahead, 4-1, but the Reds came back to tie the score before Bobby Tolan dropped a fly by Davey Johnson in the ninth, allowing the batter to reach second, and Marty Perez followed with a triple.

Astros 4, Padres 0 at Houston (night game):
Don Wilson pitched a two-hitter and gained his first victory for the Astros this season, shutting out the Padres, 4-0. The Astros reached Clay Kirby for two runs in the first inning on singles by Tommie Agee, Tommy Helms, Cesar Cedeno and Jim Wynn. A walk to Helms, single by Cedeno and triple by Bob Watson added the other pair in the eighth.

Dodgers 1, Giants 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
An error that produced an unearned run in the fifth inning enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Giants, 1-0, in a duel between Don Sutton and Ron Bryant. Bill Buckner singled in the fifth and was forced by Willie Davis. With two out, Joe Ferguson doubled with Davis stopping at third, but when the throw by Garry Maddox from center field bounced away off the pitcher's mound, Davis came home to score the game's only run.

Mets 5, Expos 0 at New York (day game):
Harry Parker and Tug McGraw combined on a three-hitter as the Mets shut out the Expos, 5-0. Parker gave way to McGraw after pulling a muscle on the basepaths in the seventh inning. Parker and Balor Moore, who started for the Expos, engaged in a scoreless duel until the sixth when the Mets broke away with three runs. Bud Harrelson and Willie Mays walked around a sacrifice. After Rusty Staub forced Mays, George Theodore, John Milner and Jim Fregosi delivered run-producing singles. Milner iced the game with a homer after a pass to Staub in the eighth.

Phillies 7, Cardinals 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
Staked to a 7-0 lead, Jim Lonborg gained his first N. L. victory when the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 7-4. Lonborg couldn't travel the distance, however, and gave way to Mac Scarce after 6 2/3 innings. Bob Boone singled to drive in two of the Phillies' four runs in the first and the scoring of the other tallies in the fourth featured a triple by Denny Doyle and double by Larry Bowa.
