Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Tigers 3 at Baltimore (day game):
An error by Willie Horton that allowed two unearned runs to score enabled the Orioles to defeat the Tigers, 5-3. Earl Williams homered with a man on base for the Orioles in the fourth inning to tie the score at 2-2, but the Tigers went ahead again in the sixth when Al Kaline counted on a double by Horton. In the Orioles' half, Merv Rettenmund, Boog Powell and Don Baylor singled, Rettenmund scoring, and when Horton let Baylor's hit get past him in left field, Powell and Baylor also crossed the plate to provide the Orioles' winning margin.

[DH] Indians 8, Red Sox 7 (day game) / Red Sox 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
The Red Sox scored four runs in the fifth inning and gained a 5-2 victory to split a doubleheader with the Indians, who won the first game, 8-7, on a grand-slam homer by designated hitter Ron Lolich in the ninth inning. In the lidlifter, Rico Petrocelli and Reggie Smith homered for the Red Sox, while Oscar Gamble and Jack Brohamer rapped round-trippers for the Indians before the Red Sox went ahead in the ninth, 7-4, on a walk to Doug Griffin, a sacrifice, double by Luis Aparicio and homer by Carl Yastrzemski. Leo Cardenas was safe on an error in the Indians' half, Tom Ragland singled and Chris Chambliss walked before Sonny Siebert took the mound for the Red Sox. Charlie Spikes struck out, but on Siebert's first pitch to Lolich, the rookie outfielder connected for his grand slam. In the nightcap, the Red Sox fashioned their big inning on a walk and five hits, including a two-run single by Tommy Harper.

[DH] White Sox 8, Royals 4 (day game) / Royals 6, White Sox 1 at Kansas City (day game):
A five-run outburst in the second inning started the White Sox on their way to an 8-4 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Royals came back with an attack that included five doubles to win the nightcap, 6-1. In the lidlifter, Mike Andrews and Jorge Orta singled and Chuck Brinkman doubled to produce the first two runs for the White Sox. After Johnny Jeter singled, Carlos May hit a three-run homer. Jeter, who had four hits in the game, added a run with a round-tripper in the fourth. John Mayberry homered for the Royals. Steve Hovley hit two doubles for the Royals in the nightcap and Fran Healy, Ed Kirkpatrick and Mayberry rapped one apiece. Hovley drove in two runs.

Brewers 4, Yankees 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
John Vukovich, Brewers' rookie third baseman, hit his first major league homer, connecting off Sparky Lyle with two men on base in the seventh inning, to beat the Yankees, 4-3. Jim Ray Hart, the Yankees' designated hitter, scored one of their runs and batted in two. Don Money homered for the Brewers' initial tally in the fourth. Ellie Rodriguez was safe on an error by Gene Michael in the seventh and Ollie Brown singled to set the stage for Vukovich's winning homer.

Twins 6, Rangers 4 at Minnesota (day game):
A double by Steve Braun with the bases loaded in the sixth inning was the Twins' big blow in a 6-4 victory over the Rangers. Dick Bosman, pitching for the Rangers with the score tied, 2-2, gave up a single by Rod Carew in the sixth and walked Harmon Killebrew and Danny Walton to load the bases. Don Stanhouse, in relief, struck out Bobby Darwin, but Braun hit his double to clear the sacks and scored himself on a single by Danny Thompson.

A's 3, Angels 2 at Oakland (day game):
With two out in the 10th inning, Angel Mangual walked and scored on singles by Ray Fosse and Ted Kubiak to give the Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Angels.

[DH] Pirates 10, Cubs 4 (day game) / Cubs 11, Pirates 3 at Chicago (day game):
Willie Stargell and Bob Robertson drove in nine runs between them on the strength of two homers apiece to power the Pirates to a 10-4 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Cubs came swinging back to win the nightcap, 11-3. Stargell homered with a man on base in the first inning and with two aboard in the ninth. Robertson connected for a three-run homer in the fifth and added a solo swat in the eighth. The Cubs' attack in the second game included homers by Ron Santo and Rick Monday, each with a man on base. Ken Rudolph also accounted for two RBIs with a single and sacrifice fly. The Pirates were blanked until the eighth when they scored their three runs on circuit clouts by Rennie Stennett and Al Oliver.

Reds 6, Braves 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Although tagged for three homers, Ross Grimsley pitched the Reds past the Braves, 6-3, for his third straight victory. Dave Concepcion provided the chief support for Grimsley, batting in four runs -- one with an infield grounder in the second inning, another with a homer in the fourth and two with a double in the fifth. Hank Aaron was out of the Braves' lineup because of an ailing back, but Johnny Oates, Dusty Baker and Darrell Evans swung home run bats in his place.

Astros 4, Padres 3 at Houston (day game):
Hitless in 14 official trips, Roger Metzger broke out of his slump with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning to bring the Astros a 4-3 victory over the Padres. Bob Watson walked and counted the Astros' initial run on a double by Jim Wynn in the second inning. After the Padres went ahead in the third, 3-1, Watson doubled in the sixth, Wynn walked and Johnny Edwards drove them home with a triple to tie the score. Metzger followed with his deciding single.

Giants 4, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Garry Maddox, whose bad throw from the outfield resulted in a 1-0 defeat for the Giants in the previous night's game, made amends for his error with a three-run homer to beat the Dodgers, 4-2. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead on a circuit clout by Joe Ferguson in the second inning, but Tito Fuentes singled for the Giants in the fourth and, after a forceout by Chris Speier, Dave Kingman walked to set the stage for Maddox' homer.

[DH] Expos 2, Mets 1 (day game) / Mets 13, Expos 3 at New York (day game):
The Mets, after collecting only three hits and losing the first game of a doubleheader, 2-1, in 10 innings, swung their bats to the tune of 16 hits in the second game and trounced the Expos, 13-3. Ron Fairly homered for the Expos in the second inning of the lidlifter, but the Mets tied the score in the ninth on a walk to Jim Fregosi, a wild pitch and single by Ken Boswell. In the 10th, John Boccabella singled for the Expos and Boots Day walked. After Pepe Frias forced Boccabella at third, Tim Foli singled to drive in the deciding run. Ed Kranepool batted in four runs with a single, double and triple in the Mets' spree in the nightcap and Jim McAndrew, John Milner and Jim Beauchamp each drove in two runs.

[DH] Phillies 4, Cardinals 2 (day game) / Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
A homer by Mike Schmidt with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Phillies to complete the sweep of a doubleheader with 4-2 and 2-1 victories over the Cardinals. Steve Carlton handed the Cardinals their two runs in the first game on a wild pickoff throw with the bases loaded in the third inning, but the Phillies came back to tie the score in the third when Larry Bowa bunted safely, Tommy Hutton was safe on an error and Bill Robinson doubled. Then, in the next inning, the two deciding runs followed on singles by Bob Boone and Denny Doyle, a sacrifice by Carlton and single by Bowa. The Phillies took a 1-0 lead against Bob Gibson in the first inning of the second game when Bowa tripled and Hutton singled. The Cardinals tied it against Dick Ruthven in the eighth with two walks and a single by Tim McCarver. Billy Wilson relieved and was the winner on Schmidt's homer in the ninth.
