Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Twins 3 at Boston (night game):
Bobby Bolin, taking the mound for the Red Sox with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning, struck out Harmon Killebrew to save a 4-3 victory over the Twins. Carlton Fisk homered for the Red Sox in the second, but the Twins went ahead, 3-1, before the Red Sox rallied to tie the score in the fifth. One run scored on a single by Luis Aparicio for the 2,000th hit of his major league career. Designated hitter Orlando Cepeda doubled in the sixth and scored the deciding run on a double by John Kennedy.

Angels 1, Orioles 0 at California (night game):
A single by Bobby Valentine with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth inning gave the Angels a 1-0 victory over the Orioles in a pitching duel between Bill Singer and Dave McNally. Leroy Stanton singled to start the eighth, Billy Grabarkewitz walked, Jeff Torborg sacrificed and Sandy Alomar was handed an intentional pass. After Vada Pinson forced Stanton at the plate, Valentine came through with his winning hit.

Royals 3, Brewers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Scoring all their runs in the first inning, the Royals defeated the Brewers, 3-2. Freddie Patek and Amos Otis drew walks and, with two out, both counted on a double by Lou Piniella. Ed Kirkpatrick followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the deciding run. Bob Coluccio homered for the Brewers.

White Sox 3, Yankees 0 at New York (day game):
Working with two days rest, Wilbur Wood allowed only five hits and pitched the White Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Yankees. Carlos May homered off Mel Stottlemyre in the first inning to give Wood the only run that he needed, but the White Sox gave their veteran knuckleballer some extra margin with RBI singles by Ed Herrmann in the fourth and Ken Henderson in the eighth.

Indians 1, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Dick Tidrow yielded only two hits in his best major league performance so far and pitched the Indians to a 1-0 victory over the Athletics. With Vida Blue sidelined by a knee injury, Rollie Fingers made his first start since May 15, 1971, and was the loser on an unearned run. Oscar Gamble walked in the second inning and tried for third on a single by George Hendrick. Bert Campaneris, the A's relay man, missed the throw from Joe Rudi and when Sal Bando grabbed the ball and overthrew third, where Fingers was covering, Gamble continued home to score.

Rangers 4, Tigers 1 at Texas (night game):
Joe Coleman, who had won four straight games for the Tigers, was stopped on his streak by the Rangers, 4-1. Jeff Burroughs opened the Rangers' scoring with a homer in the third inning and another run followed on a single by Elliott Maddox, his theft of second and a single by Toby Harrah. The Rangers' two other tallies counted in the sixth on a single by Harrah and doubles by Alex Johnson and Dick Billings.

Braves 5, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A triple by Darrell Evans was the big blow when the Braves scored three runs in the first inning en route to a 5-2 victory over the Phillies. Ralph Garr led off with a single and stole second. After a pass to Hank Aaron, Evans hit his triple and then scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Mike Lum.

Giants 5, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Juan Marichal pitched the Giants to a 5-0 victory and continued his career mastery of the Cubs, whom he defeated for 22nd time in 30 decisions. Chris Speier homered in the first inning and Dave Kingman hit for the circuit in the second to provide early support for Marichal.

Reds 7, Expos 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
A homer by Joe Morgan with two men on base after an error by Pepe Frias brought the Reds a 7-4 victory over the Expos. Larry Stahl started the stanza with a single and Denis Menke sacrificed. After Cesar Geronimo went out, Pete Rose batted for Jack Billingham and was passed intentionally. Frias then let a grounder by Dave Concepcion go through his legs, allowing the tying run to score, and Morgan followed with his homer to win the game for the Reds.

Mets 5, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Rusty Staub snapped a 1-for-29 slump with two homers and a single to help the Mets defeat the Astros, 5-2. Staub homered in the second inning and again in the fifth. In between, the Mets scored three runs in the third on singles by Bud Harrelson and Felix Millan, a double by by John Milner and single by George Theodore. Doug Rader hit a homer for the Astros.

Dodgers 5, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Willie Davis, after failing to sacrifice, knocked in a run with a triple in the 11th inning to spark the Dodgers to a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals. Bill Buckner, who was on base with a single, scored on Davis' three-bagger. Joe Ferguson then walked. Lee Lacy grounded to Ray Busse and Davis was out at the plate, but Ron Cey drew a pass to load the bases and Davey Lopes hit a sacrifice fly to add the clinching tally. Scipio Spinks, who was the Cardinals' starting pitcher, hit the first homer of his major league career.
