Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 7, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Dave May climaxed a five-run rally in the ninth inning and brought the Brewers a 7-3 victory over the Royals. Joe Lahoud singled to drive in the first run and, after an intentional pass to Pedro Garcia loaded the bases, May smashed his homer off Bruce Dal Canton, who was the Royals' third pitcher of the inning, following Ken Wright and Gene Garber. The defeat was charged to Garber.

A's 3, Indians 2 at Oakland (night game):
Seizing the opportunity afforded by an error, the Athletics scored a run in the ninth inning to defeat the Indians, 3-2. Gene Tenace, leading off, was safe when his grounder went through the legs of John Lowenstein. Blue Moon Odom ran for Tenace. Angel Mangual, trying to bunt, popped a single over the head of Chris Chambliss. Ray Fosse sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Ted Kubiak, Bert Campaneris singled to drive in the winning run.

Tigers 3, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
The Tigers scored three runs in the ninth inning and then stood off a rally by the Rangers to emerge with a 3-2 victory. The Rangers were held to one hit by Woodie Fryman until the eighth when they scored on a single by Elliott Maddox and double by Ken Suarez. The Tigers, scoreless on three hits through the eighth, opened the ninth with a single by Dick McAuliffe. Norm Cash walked and Jim Northrup singled to drive in the tying run. Aurelio Rodriguez then tripled to score two runs and beat Pete Broberg. In the Rangers' half, Rico Carty walked with one out. Lerrin LaGrow relieved and Alex Johnson doubled, pinch-runner Tom Grieve stopping at third. Jeff Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly. John Hiller took over and retired Dick Billings for the final out.

Giants 7, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Giants bunched six singles and a sacrifice fly for four runs in the third inning and defeated the Cubs, 7-3. Ron Bryant, who hurled the route for the Giants, led off the big inning with his first hit. Singles by Bobby Bonds and Tito Fuentes loaded the bases. Chris Speier singled to score Bryant. Willie McCovey's sacrifice fly admitted Bonds. Dave Kingman and Gary Thomasson each singled, driving in Fuentes and Speier.

Mets 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
The Mets combined two of their four hits with a walk and an error for two runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Astros, 2-1. Jim McAndrew and Tug McGraw, who pitched for the Mets, allowed five hits, with the Astros' run coming on a homer by Doug Rader in the fifth. Willie Mays walked to open the Mets' sixth and scored the tying run on singles by Rusty Staub and Jim Beauchamp. George Theodore bunted and when Bob Watson fumbled the ball, the bases were loaded. After Jim Fregosi struck out, Duffy Dyer grounded to Roger Metzger, but when the Astros failed in their attempt to turn a double play, Staub scored what proved to be the winning run.
