Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 2, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
Led by Pat Kelly, who collected three doubles and a walk for a perfect day at the plate, the White Sox defeated the Red Sox, 2-1. Kelly hit his first double to lead off the game and scored on a sacrifice by Carlos May and infield out by Dick Allen. After hitting another double in the third, Kelly counted on a two-bagger by Bill Melton. The Red Sox piled up 11 hits and drew six walks, but left 16 men on base and scored their only run in the third when Luis Aparicio drew a pass and crossed the plate on a double by Carlton Fisk.

Angels 5, Indians 0 at California (night game):
Staked to a four-run lead by the Angels in the first inning, Rudy May pitched his second consecutive shutout and beat the Indians, 5-0. Tommy McCraw and Vada Pinson cracked singles to open the initial frame. After Bobby Valentine forced McCraw at third, Frank Robinson singled to drive in Pinson. Jim Spencer followed with a two-run triple and then scored himself on a two-out single by Al Gallagher.

Royals 7, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
Batting with bases the loaded and two out in the seventh inning, Lou Piniella cleared the sacks with a double to give the Royals a 7-4 victory over the Tigers. The Royals knocked out Mickey Lolich while scoring four times in the sixth, but the Tigers came back with four runs in their half. In the Royals' seventh, Fran Healy walked, Freddie Patek doubled and Cookie Rojas drew a pass to load the bases. Amos Otis forced Healy at the plate and John Mayberry struck out, but Piniella came through in the clutch situation with his game-winning double.

Yankees 11, Twins 3 at New York (day game):
The Yankees smashed four homers, each with a man on base, to trounce the Twins, 11-3, behind the six-hit pitching of Doc Medich, who turned in the first complete game of his major league career. Bobby Murcer whacked two of the Yankees' blows and Matty Alou and Graig Nettles hit one apiece. Alou's homer was his first with the Yankees and was one of the veteran outfielder's four hits in the game.

Orioles 2, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Bobby Grich, who singled and scored the Orioles' first run on a double by Tommy Davis in the first inning, came to the plate in the third and smashed a homer to enable Jim Palmer to beat the Athletics, 2-1, for his first victory of the season. Ken Holtzman was the loser of the duel. The A's picked up their run in the second on a double by Gene Tenace and single by Ray Fosse.

Brewers 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
After designated hitter Ollie Brown drove in the first three runs, the Brewers added an unearned tally in the eighth inning to defeat the Rangers, 4-3. Pedro Garcia was safe on an error by Toby Harrah in the eighth, took third on a single by Dave May and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Johnson. Elliott Maddox homered with two men on base in the Rangers' half of the eighth to account for their runs off Jerry Bell.

Mets 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
With a bases-loaded single by Ed Kranepool as the key blow, the Mets rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to beat the Braves, 4-2. The Braves took a 2-1 lead in the seventh with a homer by Davey Johnson and run-scoring single by Sonny Jackson. In the Mets' eighth, Felix Millan singled, Willie Mays doubled and Rusty Staub was passed intentionally to fill the sacks. Kranepool followed with his single to drive in two runs. Jerry Grote added an insurance run with another single.

Cubs 2, Padres 0 at Chicago (day game):
Rick Monday homered as leadoff man in the first inning and then doubled and scored on a single by Jim Hickman in the third to account for the Cubs' scoring in a 2-0 victory over the Padres. Rick Reuschel, who was lifted in the eighth, was the winner with relief help from Jack Aker.

Phillies 1, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Dick Ruthven, Billy Wilson and Mac Scarce combined on a two-hitter as the Phillies defeated the Reds, 1-0, on a run-scoring single by Willie Montanez with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Ruthven gave up only one hit, a single by Pete Rose in the third, before going out for pinch-hitter Cesar Tovar in the eighth and received credit for his first major league victory. Wilson allowed a single by Larry Stahl in the eighth and Scarce retired the side in order in the ninth. Terry Harmon began the Phillies' run-scoring stanza with a single. Tovar, after failing to sacrifice, beat out an infield hit. Larry Bowa bunted and forced Harmon at third. Don Gullett, who fielded the ball, twisted his ankle and left the game in favor of Pedro Borbon. The Reds' reliever walked Del Unser and then was tagged for a single by Montanez.

Astros 5, Expos 3 at Houston (night game):
Jim Wynn whacked his seventh homer of the season, connecting with two men on base, to lift the Astros to a 5-3 victory over the Expos. Steve Renko, pitching for the Expos, had a 3-0 lead with two out in the seventh inning when Doug Rader ignited an Astro rally with a homer. Johnny Edwards singled. Tim Foli then committed consecutive errors on grounders by Tommy Helms and Bob Gallagher to allow Edwards to score. Wynn followed with his homer.

Dodgers 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Stolen bases helped set up two of the Dodgers' runs in a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. In the third inning, Davey Lopes beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored on an error. After the Dodgers added a run on singles by Ron Cey, Lopes and Bill Russell in the fifth, Willie Davis singled in the sixth, stole second and scored the deciding run on a single by Joe Ferguson.

Giants 1, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Bobby Bonds hit Reggie Cleveland's second pitch of the game for a homer and that was all Jim Willoughby needed to pitch the Giants to a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals.
