Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 7, Red Sox 6 at Boston (night game):
Batting in his fourth run of the game, Jeff Burroughs singled in the ninth inning to give the Rangers a 7-6 victory over the Red Sox. The Rangers' outfielder knocked in two runs with a single in the third and homered in the sixth. With the score tied. 6-6, Rico Carty drew a walk in the ninth. Tom Grieve, running for Carty, stole second and scored the winning run with two out when Burroughs singled.

White Sox 6, Orioles 5 at Chicago (night game):
Two homers by Dick Allen and one by Ed Herrmann, who also drove in the decisive run with a sacrifice fly, paced the White Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Orioles. Allen homered in the first inning and led off the fourth with his second blast of the game. Then, after one out, Ken Henderson singled and Herrmann hit for the circuit. In the sixth, Bill Melton, Henderson and Rick Reichardt singled for one run and Herrmann lofted his sacrifice fly for the winning marker.

Angels 6, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Angels piled up 14 hits, including homers by Frank Robinson and Billy Grabarkewitz, in support of Bill Singer, who yielded only five hits and beat the Tigers, 6-2. Robinson drove in two runs with his homer and a single. Bob Oliver also accounted for two RBIs with a single and two doubles.

Brewers 4, A's 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Johnny Briggs drove in all of the Brewers' runs, capping his big night with a homer in the ninth inning, to defeat the Athletics, 4-3. Briggs accounted for his first three RBIs with a bases-loaded triple in the third.

Yankees 6, Royals 1 at New York (night game):
Ineffective in four previous appearances, Sparky Lyle gained his first save of the season when the Yankees defeated the Royals, 6-1. Lyle, who was the A. L.'s premier reliever last season, pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings. The Yankees, after scoring twice in the second inning, wrapped up their victory with four runs in the seventh on a double by Horace Clarke, singles by Roy White and Matty Alou and a homer by Bobby Murcer.

Expos 9, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron hit the 679th and 680th homers of his major league career, but the Braves nevertheless lost to the Expos, 9-6. Aaron's smashes accounted for three runs. Darrell Evans also drove in three runs with a homer in the sixth. The Expos took a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning when Mike Jorgensen hit for the circuit with a man on base, but Aaron tied the score with his second homer of the game in the Braves' half. In the eighth, the Expos loaded the bases and Hal Breeden delivered a pinch-single for the tie-breaking run. Ron Hunt followed with a single for two more tallies to clinch the decision.

Cubs 9, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Three homers in one inning highlighted the Cubs' 14-hit attack in a 9-5 victory over the Dodgers. Glenn Beckert led off the fourth with a single and Billy Williams followed with a homer. Then, after one out, Ron Santo and Jose Cardenal hit for the circuit in succession. Tom Paciorek and Bill Buckner rapped consecutive homers for the Dodgers in the ninth inning.

Astros 3, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
In a duel between two former Cardinal teammates, Jerry Reuss came out ahead of Steve Carlton and pitched the Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Jim Wynn homered in the fifth inning. The Astros' other runs followed in the seventh. Larry Howard doubled and scored on an infield out and passed ball. Wynn was hit by a pitch and, after stealing second, crossed the plate on a single by Hector Torres.

Padres 10, Cardinals 5 at San Diego (night game):
Breaking a 3-3 tie, the Padres scored six runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 10-5. Dave Hilton walked to open the stanza and when Ivan Murrell bunted, both runners were safe on a late throw to second. Derrel Thomas singled for a run to snap the tie. Leron Lee walked to load the bases and Nate Colbert drove in two runs with a ground-rule double. A walk to Cito Gaston, error on a grounder by Fred Kendall on which two runs scored and a sacrifice fly by Dave Campbell added the other tallies.

Giants 8, Pirates 7 at San Francisco (night game):
In a fantastic rally, the Giants took advantage of Pirate pitchers' wildness and scored seven runs in the ninth inning to gain an 8-7 victory. Gary Thomasson homered in the fifth for the Giants' only run until Bob Moose helped contribute to the Pirates' downfall by walking three batters to load the bases in the ninth. After Ramon Hernandez replaced Moose, Chris Arnold batted for Thomasson and hit a grand-slam homer. Gary Matthews kept the attack going with a double. Dave Rader and Jim Howarth walked to load the bases again and Bonds cleared the sacks with a double to climax the Giants' comeback.
