Cubs 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Shut out until the ninth inning, the Cubs rallied for four runs to defeat the Dodgers, 4-1, The Dodgers picked up their run with the aid of an an error in the first and Andy Messersmith protected that margin until the ninth when consecutive singles by Joe Pepitone, Ron Santo and Jose Cardenal loaded the bases. Jim Brewer relieved and walked Jim Hickman to force in the tying run. Don Kessinger then sent the Cubs ahead with a two-run single. Dave LaRoche bunted safely to fill the sacks again and Paul Popovich hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the last run.

Reds 6, Mets 5 at New York (night game):
Rusty Staub hit a grand-slam homer for the Mets in the first inning, but the Reds came back with a six-run rally in the fourth to gain a 6-5 victory. Singles by Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench, a double by Tony Perez and single by Bobby Tolan accounted for the Reds' first two runs. The third scored when Dave Concepcion grounded into a double play. Richie Scheinblum and Denis Menke kept the rally going with singles. When the Reds sent up Bill Plummer to pinch-hit for Jim McGlothlin, the Mets took out Jon Matlack and called on Hank Webb. Larry Stahl then batted for Plummer and hit Webb's first pitch for a three-run homer.

Cardinals 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Two unearned runs enabled the Cardinals to defeat the Padres, 3-1. In the fifth inning, Reggie Cleveland walked, Lou Brock singled and, after a sacrifice by Luis Melendez, Joe Torre was passed intentionally. Derrel Thomas then booted a grounder by Ted Simmons, one run scoring, and another followed on a sacrifice fly by Tim McCarver. Melendez singled in the eighth and scored from first base when Simmons singled and Cito Gaston let the ball get away from him in right field.

Pirates 14, Giants 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Al Oliver drove in six runs with two homers, including a grand slam, to lead the Pirates' 17-hit attack in a 14-5 trouncing of the Giants. Oliver's first homer followed a single by Manny Sanguillen in the first inning. Gary Matthews dropped a line drive by Bob Robertson in the second and Milt May singled. After the next two batters struck out, singles by Dave Cash and Manny Sanguillen produced one run before Oliver connected for his jackpot wallop. Oliver also collected two singles and was on base when May hit an inside-the-park homer for three of the Pirates' four runs in the fourth.
