Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Angels 0 at Baltimore (day game):
With Palmer pitching a five-hitter, the Orioles snapped out of a five-game losing streak by defeating the Angels, 5-0. The Orioles loaded the bases against Nolan Ryan on two walks around a single by Bobby Grich in the first inning and scored two runs on a pass to Earl Williams and infield out by Boog Powell. The other tallies followed in the seventh, two crossing the plate on a bases-loaded single by Williams.

White Sox 11, Yankees 2 at Chicago (day game):
Although stopped on his streak of 28 scoreless innings, Wilbur Wood beat the Yankees for the seventh straight time since July 18, 1971, and the White Sox extended their winning streak to nine games with an 11-2 victory. Wood, who was rapped for 10 hits, gave up a run in the first inning on a triple by Matty Alou and single by Bobby Murcer. The Yankees did not add their other run until the ninth. Meanwhile, the White Sox piled up 17 hits, including three apiece by Pat Kelly, Dick Allen and Bill Melton. Melton batted in four runs.

[DH] A's 12, Indians 0 (day game) / A's 7, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
The Athletics, who got a five-hitter from Ken Holtzman in the first game and a six-hitter from Vida Blue in the second game, pounded the Indians in a doubleheader, 12-0 and 7-3. The A's piled up 18 hits in the lidlifter, including a homer by Joe Rudi. Bert Campaneris hit a two-run triple in the second inning and walked with the bases loaded for another RBI in the third. Bill North knocked in three runs with as many singles. The A's were limited to nine hits in the nightcap, but their attack was potent with two-run homers by Deron Johnson and Sal Bando, a two-run double by Reggie Jackson and a homer with the bases empty by Gene Tenace.

Rangers 7, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Toby Harrah batted in four runs with a single and triple and Alex Johnson drove in three with a homer and single to account for the Rangers' scoring in a 7-2 victory over the Tigers. Mickey Lolich, a winner of 25 and 22 games for the Tigers in the two previous seasons, was tagged with his fourth defeat of the year against one victory.

Brewers 3, Royals 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
A homer by Darrell Porter in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Brewers a 3-2 victory over the Royals in a four-hit duel between Jerry Bell and Dick Drago. The Royals wrapped singles by Ed Kirkpatrick and Lou Piniella around an error for a run in the second and added their other tally on a round-tripper by John Mayberry in the fourth. The Brewers came back with a run in their half on a double by Tim Johnson, bunt single by Don Money and sacrifice fly by Dave May before tying the score with a homer by Johnny Briggs in the fifth.

Twins 10, Red Sox 3 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins presented a victory to Bill Hands on his 33rd birthday by defeating the Red Sox, 10-3, with a 14-hit attack that included homers by Bobby Darwin, Larry Hisle and Joe Lis.

Dodgers 3, Cardinals 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Al Downing yielded only two hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals. Alan Foster, who made his first start for the Redbirds, also pitched well, giving up three hits in seven innings, but they included a homer by Joe Ferguson in the second.

Reds 6, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
Dave Concepcion hit two singles, stole three bases and scored twice before capping his performance with a homer in the ninth inning of the Reds' 6-1 victory over the Expos. Johnny Bench batted in two runs with a sacrifice fly and homer. Richie Scheinblum also accounted for a pair with a single.

Astros 14, Mets 8 at New York (day game):
The Astros reached their season high in hits with 18 and also had their best scoring game so far this year while beating the Mets, 14-8, for their eighth straight victory. However, the pitching for neither club was outstanding. The Mets had 11 hits and were ahead, 7-3, before the Astros tied the score in the sixth inning with the aid of a three-run homer by Bob Watson. Then, in the seventh, the Astros exploded for seven runs, including a grand-slam homer by Watson off Ray Sadecki, who relieved loser Tug McGraw. The victory went to Mike Cosgrove, the fifth of six pitchers used by the Astros, and was the first of his major league career.

Braves 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Jacket Day attracted an amazing crowd of 60,120 and the Phillies also gave away the game to the Braves, 3-1, on two passes with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Dusty Baker homered for the Braves in the fourth and Mike Ryan tied the score with a round-tripper in the fifth. Mac Scarce, taking over in relief for the Phillies in the eighth, was rapped for singles by Mike Lum and Baker before striking out pinch-hitter Hank Aaron. However, when Davey Johnson walked to load the bases, Billy Wilson was summoned. Wilson passed Marty Perez to force in the tie-breaking run and also walked Gary Gentry, the Braves' winning pitcher, to force in an extra tally.

Padres 8, Pirates 0 at San Diego (day game):
While Mike Caldwell pitched a two-hitter, the Padres broke loose with their best batting attack of the season so far to defeat the Pirates, 8-0. Caldwell, who yielded singles by Rennie Stennett and Milt May in the third inning, became the first pitcher to shut out the Pirates this year. The Padres, on the other hand, swung away for 16 hits, including homers by Johnny Grubb and Cito Gaston. Grubb's blow was his first in the major leagues.

[DH] Giants 11, Cubs 9 (day game) / Giants 4, Cubs 3 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants won a fight-marred first game of a doubleheader, 11-9, in 12 innings and then completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Cubs in the second game. The trouble in the lidlifter had its inception when Jim Barr, pitching for the Giants, plinked Ron Santo in the third inning after giving up a three-run homer to Joe Pepitone. When Barr came to bat in the fourth, Milt Pappas threw a pitch that zinged over his rival hurler's head. Both benches emptied and, in the confusion, Dave Rader, who was on first base, came around to score for the Giants. After order was restored, Pappas hit Barr on the right elbow with his next pitch, setting off a general melee. The only casualty was coach Pete Reiser of the Cubs, who had to be carried off the field. The umpires ejected Barr, Pappas, manager Whitey Lockman of the Cubs and coach Hank Aguirre. Billy Williams and Randy Hundley also homered for the Cubs, while Gary Matthews and Dave Kingman connected for the Giants. Kingman drove in five runs with his homer and a single. In the 12th, Don Carrithers, batting with two out, singled and Bobby Bonds followed with the game-winning homer. Chris Speier batted in two runs to lead the Giants to their victory in the nightcap. After the Giants took a 2-1 lead, Speier made it 3-1 with his triple in the fifth and then scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Kingman. Adrain Garrett hit a homer for the Cubs.
