Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, A's 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Doyle Alexander doled out five hits and pitched the Orioles to an 8-2 victory over the Athletics. The Orioles scored three of their runs in the second inning on a pass to Bobby Grich with the bases loaded and a single by Boog Powell. One of the A's runs came on a homer by designated hitter Deron Johnson.

Red Sox 4, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox, who had won nine straight games, were stopped on that streak by the Red Sox, 4-1. John Curtis, who had been relegated to the bullpen by the Red Sox, came out for his first start since April 19 and pitched a five-hitter. Stan Bahnsen was beaten, ending his string of nine straight victories over the Red Sox going back to May 20, 1971, when the righthander was pitching for the Yankees. John Kennedy started the Red Sox on the way to their triumph with a two-run triple in the fifth inning.

Pirates 5, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Staging a slugging show, the Pirates smashed five homers for all their runs and defeated the Dodgers, 5-4. Willie Stargell started the bombardment in the second inning. Dave Cash followed with a clout in the fifth and Richie Hebner homered in the sixth. Back-to-back blows by Manny Sanguillen and Al Oliver climaxed the attack in the seventh.

Astros 6, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
With Dave Roberts pitching a six-hitter, the Astros extended their winning streak to nine games by defeating the Expos, 6-0. The Astros decided the outcome with three runs in the second inning on singles by Bob Watson, Lee May, Johnny Edwards, Tommy Helms and Roberts and a sacrifice fly by Jim Wynn.

Mets 7, Braves 2 at New York (night game):
Tom Seaver was able to gain his first victory since April 12 when the Mets erupted for six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Braves, 7-2. Wayne Garrett and Rusty Staub started the outburst with singles and Ed Kranepool drove in a run with a double to tie the score at 2-2. After an intentional pass to Jim Gosger, Bud Harrelson walked with one out to force in the go-ahead run. Seaver forced Harrelson, Kranepool scoring, and when Davey Johnson threw wildly, attempting a double play, Gosger also crossed the plate. A pass to Ted Martinez and single by Felix Millan added the fifth run of the frame. Garrett then walked to load the bases and Staub drew a pass to force in the final marker.

Phillies 3, Reds 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A pass with the bases loaded in the 14th inning gave the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Reds. With two out, Greg Luzinski walked. Bill Plummer, a catcher playing third base because the Reds ran out of infielders, fumbled a grounder by Bill Robinson. After a passed ball by Johnny Bench, Mike Rogodzinski was handed an intentional pass. Mike Ryan then drew a walk from Pedro Borbon to force in the game-winning run.

Padres 4, Cubs 1 at San Diego (night game):
Bill Greif pitched the second straight two-hitter to the credit of the Padres' staff and defeated the Cubs, 4-1. In the previous day's game, Mike Caldwell had a two-hitter in his 8-0 victory over the Pirates. Greif gave up a single by Glenn Beckert in the fourth inning and then was deprived of a shutout when Jose Cardenal homered in the eighth. Fred Kendall and Dave Campbell each batted in two of the Padres' tallies.
