Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Pat Kelly tripled in the fourth inning and scored on a single by Carlos May to enable the White Sox to defeat the Red Sox, 1-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Eddie Fisher and Terry Forster. Marty Pattin, who allowed four hits on the mound for the Red Sox, was tagged with his sixth straight loss.

Indians 2, Angels 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Snapping his personal three-game losing streak, Gaylord Perry pitched a four-hitter for the Indians and shut out the Angels, 2-0. Dave Duncan homered in the second inning to decide Perry's duel with Clyde Wright.

Royals 7, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Ed Kirkpatrick hit two doubles and a triple, driving in one run and scoring three, as the Royals defeated the Tigers, 7-2. Paul Schaal batted in Kirkpatrick with a single in the second inning and homered with Kirkpatrick on base in the eighth. Amos Otis also hit a homer for the Royals. Paul Splittorff gave up nine hits to the Tigers, but was backed by four double plays.

Rangers 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Rangers made use of an error, walk and hit batsman to gain a 5-3 vistory over the Brewers. A wild throw by Jim Slaton led to the Rangers' initial tally in the fourth inning. Doubles by Vic Harris and Ken Suarez added two runs in the fifth. Then, after a single by Dave Nelson, Toby Harrah and Alex Johnson walked to force in Suarez. Mike Epstein was hit by a pitch in the eighth and Rico Carty walked. Epstein moved to third as Jeff Burroughs forced Carty and scored on a grounder by Elliott Maddox. A walk to Suarez, sacrifice and single by Johnson added an insurance marker in the ninth.

Yankees 14, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Although having only a 14-11 advantage in hits, the Yankees overwhelmed the Twins, 14-4. Every Yankee batter, except for Ron Swoboda, who was a late-inning replacement in right field, had at least one hit, one run scored and one run batted in. Ron Blomberg led the attack with a homer and single for four RBIs.

Dodgers 7, Pirates 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Pirates smashed three more homers, giving them eight in two games, but they collected only three other hits and lost to the Dodgers, 7-4. Willie Stargell hit two of the Pirates' homers and Al Oliver accounted for other the one. Stargell's second blast in the seventh cleared the right field pavilion and marked the second time that the slugger had driven a ball out of Dodger Stadium, a feat no other batter has been able to match. Stargell did it the first time August 5, 1969. The Dodgers won the game with five runs in the fifth inning, three scoring on a circuit clout by Ron Cey after Vic Davalillo committed an error on a play that would have ended the inning.

Expos 4, Astros 3 at Montreal (night game):
The nine-game winning streak of the Astros came to an end when relief pitcher Jim York made a bad throw home in the ninth inning to allow the Expos to gain a 4-3 victory. Ken Singleton walked with one out and took third when Ron Woods singled for the Expos' fourth hit of the game. York, replacing Ken Forsch, passed John Boccabella intentionally to load the bases. Boots Day then tapped to York, who fielded the ball and threw into the dirt at the plate to permit Singleton to score.

Braves 10, Mets 6 at New York (night game):
A line drive by Marty Perez in the seventh inning not only sent Jon Matlack to the hospital, but also proved the turning point in the game as the Braves defeated the Mets, 10-6. The Braves, who were trailing 3-1, had the bases loaded with two out when Perez' smash hit Matlack on the head and bounced into the Mets' dugout for a ground-rule double, two runs scoring. Phil Hennigan, replacing Matlack, walked Hank Aaron intentionally. Davey Johnson, who had hit a solo homer for the Braves in the fourth, then came to the plate and smashed a grand slam. Dusty Baker followed with a double and counted the Braves' seventh run of the inning on a single by Darrell Evans.

Reds 7, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pete Rose and Johnny Bench drove in all of the Reds' runs in a 7-1 victory over the Phillies. Rose, who singled and scored on a double by Bench in the first inning, knocked in two runs with a single in the third. Denis Menke was hit by a pitch in the eighth, Jack Billingham sacrificed and Rose singled for his third RBI. Then, after a single by Dave Concepcion, Bench homered.

Cubs 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Joe Pepitone, who was in uniform but out of action because of an upset stomach, came off the bench in the 12th inning and drove in a run with a double to give the Cubs a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Fergie Jenkins, who started on the mound for the Cubs, yielded two runs in the first and was in danger of losing until the eighth when Carmen Fanzone batted for him and walked and Rick Monday followed with a homer. In the 12th, Ken Rudolph doubled and Don Kessinger sacrificed before Pepitone batted for Bob Locker and drove in the deciding run.

Giants 9, Cardinals 7 at San Francisco (night game):
Bobby Bonds belted two homers and a single, driving in five runs, and Willie McCovey and Dave Kingman also hit for the circuit as the Giants defeated the Cardinals, 9-7. Giants' round-trippers accounted for the first five runs off Bob Gibson, who set a major league record by making his 242nd consecutive start. After the Cardinals crept within 6-5, the Giants decided the game with three runs in the eighth inning. A single by Jim Howarth and two walks loaded the bases. Randy Moffitt forced Howarth at the plate, but Bonds singled to drive in two runs and Tito Fuentes added a tally with a double.
