Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Indians 3 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox rallied to overcome a three-run deficit and defeated the Indians, 4-3. Dick Tidrow, who started for the Indians, allowed only three hits before being lifted in the seventh inning when the Red Sox scored their first run on a pass to Luis Aparicio and singles by Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk. With Jerry Johnson on the mound in the eighth, Doug Griffin doubled, John Kennedy walked and, after a sacrifice, singles by Aparicio and Yastrzemski produced the tying tallies. Orlando Cepeda then grounded to Buddy Bell and when the third baseman made a bad throw, Aparicio scored the deciding run.

White Sox 4, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Although rapped for 12 hits, Wilbur Wood was able to gain his seventh straight victory when the White Sox scored in the 12th inning to defeat the Angels, 4-3. Bill Singer pitched the first 11 frames for the Angels and allowed only three hits, but walks helped the White Sox count their first three runs. Ron Perranoski replaced Singer in the 12th and passed Jorge Orta. Luis Alvarado sacrificed and Pat Kelly drove in a run with a single. Terry Forster finished up for Wood, retiring the Angels in their half of the 12th to record his seventh save.

Royals 8, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Sending 11 men to the plate, the Royals scored five runs in the fifth inning, knocking out Joe Coleman in the process, and defeated the Tigers, 8-2. Carl Taylor beat out a bunt and Freddie Patek tripled for the first run to break a 2-2 tie. A single by Steve Hovley scored Patek. Another single by Amos Otis and an error by Jim Northrup on the hit plated Hovley and drove Coleman from the mound. After John Hiller relieved, Ed Kirkpatrick and Cookie Rojas rapped run-scoring doubles.

A's 17, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
The Athletics piled up 23 hits, including homers by Ray Fosse and Deron Johnson, to overwhelm the Rangers, 17-2.

Giants 6, Cardinals 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Sam McDowell, who pitched the first six innings, gained his first victory of the season when the Giants defeated the Cardinals, 6-3. Willie McCovey homered in the second inning and Dave Kingman in the sixth for the Giants. In between, Jim Howarth drove in two runs with a triple in the fourth and Chris Speier batted in a pair with a bases-loaded single in the fifth.
