Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 10, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
Buddy Bell collected four hits and Charlie Spikes added three as the Indians ripped the Red Sox, 10-2. Bell's blows included a homer. Dave Duncan also homered in the Indians' 18-hit attack. Reggie Smith had a round-tripper for the Red Sox, who were held to a total of six hits by Gaylord Perry.
Angels 6, White Sox 5 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan, who was knocked out in the first inning in the previous night's game, made a rare appearance in relief to save the Angels' 6-5 victory over the White Sox. The fireballer accounted for the last six outs, four on strikeouts. The Angels tied their club record by hitting six doubles, including two apiece by Jeff Torborg and Jim Spencer. Torborg also hit a single in the sixth inning, following a double by Spencer, to drive in what proved to be the winning run.
Brewers 6, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
A triple by John Felske was the key blow in the second inning when the Brewers scored four runs to defeat the Tigers, 6-2. George Scott singled, Johnny Briggs walked and Gorman Thomas singled to score Scott before Felske drove in two runs with his three-bagger. Felske then scored himself on a single by Pedro Garcia. Jim Slaton held the Tigers to six hits, including a homer by Norm Cash.
Royals 4, Twins 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The streaking Royals got four-hit pitching from Paul Splittorff and beat the Twins, 4-2. Cookie Rojas was the standout at bat with two doubles and a single, driving in three runs. The Royals picked up their initial pair in the fourth inning when Amos Otis and Ed Kirkpatrick singled and Rojas sent them home with a double. A walk to John Mayberry and singles by Kirkpatrick, Rojas and Bobby Floyd added the other runs in the sixth. Phil Roof hit two doubles for the Twins, scoring one run and driving in another.
Yankees 8, Orioles 0 at New York (day game):
Doc Medich, Yankees' rookie righthander, pitched his first major league shutout, beating the Orioles, 8-0. Bobby Murcer and Celerino Sanchez each hit a two-run homer in the Yankees' attack.
A's 4, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
A loser of five previous decisions, Blue Moon Odom gained his first victory of the season when the Athletics defeated the Rangers, 4-2. Odom was lifted after five innings. Horacio Pina and Paul Lindblad finished. Deron Johnson and Bill North each had two hits for the A's. Johnson crossed the plate twice, once on a single by North.
Braves 14, Padres 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Mike Lum drove in four runs and Davey Johnson batted in three as the Braves went on their biggest scoring spree of the season so far to defeat the Padres, 14-2. Lum had a double and two singles in the Braves' 18-hit attack, while Johnson contributed a homer and single.
Cubs 3, Phillies 1 at Chicago (day game):
Ken Rudolph hit a double and homer and Don Kessinger drove in two runs with a single as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 3-1. Jose Cardenal walked in the fourth inning, Rudolph doubled and Kessinger sent them across the plate with his single. Rudolph added an insurance run with his homer in the eighth.
Astros 7, Reds 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros broke away with four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Reds, 7-1, for their 11th victory in the last 12 games and 17th in the last 20. With the score tied, 1-1, Roger Metzger doubled and Cesar Cedeno was passed intentionally. Bob Watson responded with a single to score Metzger with the go-ahead run. Lee May also singled, driving in Cedeno. Doug Rader was safe on an error to load the bases. Watson scored when Johnny Edwards grounded into a forceout. Tommie Agee, running for May, crossed the plate when Tommy Helms doubled. Jim York saved the game for Jerry Reuss, striking out Johnny Bench with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.
Mets 6, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Yielding only two hits, Tom Seaver pitched the Mets to a 6-0 victory over the Pirates. Wayne Garrett singled in the first inning, took third on a single by Felix Millan and scored when Cleon Jones grounded into a double play. Seaver protected that scant edge until the Mets gave him more working room with two runs in the eighth on singles by Jones, Rusty Staub and Ed Kranepool and a double by Jim Gosger. Garrett homered in the ninth when the Mets added their final markers.
Giants 5, Dodgers 4 at San Francisco (day game):
A throwing error by Davey Lopes with the bases loaded in the ninth inning allowed Bobby Bonds to score and gave the Giants a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. Bonds doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice by Tito Fuentes. The Dodgers walked Chris Speier and Willie McCovey intentionally to load the bases. Ed Goodson then grounded to Lopes, who threw wildly to second, trying to start a double play that would have ended the inning.
Expos 3, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Ken Singleton scored one run and knocked in two to enable the Expos to defeat the Cardinals, 3-1. Singleton walked in the first inning, Mike Jorgensen singled and Bob Bailey drew a pass to load the bases. Singleton then scored while the Cardinals executed a double play on a grounder by Terry Humphrey. Ron Hunt was hit by a pitch in the third and Ron Woods walked. Singleton followed with a single to right, scoring Hunt, and when Pete Rose was slow returning the ball to the infield, Woods raced home from first base to give Singleton credit for another RBI.
