Red Sox 8, Indians 3 at Boston (day game):
Tommy Harper hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to help the Red Sox defeat the Indians, 8-3. In the sixth inning, John Kennedy doubled and scored on a single by Doug Griffin to chase Milt Wilcox, who was the Indians' starter. Ray Lamb walked Dwight Evans before giving way to Steve Mingori. With a count of three balls and two strikes, Rick Miller laid down a surprise bunt to load the bases. Harper then swung at Mingori's next pitch and lashed the ball into the screen in left-center field. Carl Yastrzemski joined in the Red Sox attack with two homers, good for three runs, while Dave Duncan hit a three-run blow for the Indians.

Angels 3, White Sox 0 at California (day game):
Rudy May pitched his fourth shutout in his last five starts for the Angels and defeated the White Sox, 3-0. Vada Pinson, who collected three singles, drove in one run for the Angels and scored another. Jim Spencer accounted for the other tally with his first homer since April 24, 1972.

Brewers 6, Tigers 5 at Detroit (day game):
Dave May led off the 10th inning with his second homer of the game to give the Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Tigers. May's first homer accounted for one of three runs in the fifth when the Brewers took a 4-3 lead. Gates Brown homered to tie the score in the Tigers' half. The Brewers went ahead again with a run in the ninth on a triple by Darrell Porter and sacrifice fly by Pedro Garcia, but the Tigers forced the game into overtime with a single by Duke Sims, an error on a bunt by Mickey Stanley and single by Bill Freehan that scored pinch-runner Tony Taylor.

Twins 5, Royals 0 at Kansas City (day game):
The Twins, who had lost four straight games and 10 of their last 12, shut out the Royals, 5-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Dick Woodson. Tony Oliva batted in two runs with a single and double. Rod Carew accounted for one with a homer.

[DH] Yankees 4, Orioles 0 (day game) / Orioles 9, Yankees 6 at New York (day game):
Four homers provided the Yankees with a 4-0 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader, but the Orioles broke out of their batting slump to win the second game, 9-6. Bobby Murcer, Roy White, Ron Blomberg and Graig Nettles were the Yankees' sluggers in the lidlifter in support of the shutout pitching of Mel Stottlemyre and Sparky Lyle, who relieved with two men on base in the eighth inning. In the nightcap, the Orioles ended a string of 23 scoreless innings with two runs in the second on a triple by Andy Etchebarren, a hit batsman, walk and single by Tommy Davis. However, the Orioles trailed, 5-2, before erupting for four runs in the fifth. Larry Brown homered with a man on base. The Orioles' winning margin went on the scoreboard in the eighth on a single by Brown, doubles by Mark Belanger and Merv Rettenmund, an infield out and sacrifice fly by Davis.

Rangers 7, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
Sonny Siebert, making his first start for the Rangers after being acquired from the Red Sox, pitched five innings and was credited with a 7-2 victory over the Athletics. Bill Gogolewski, who finished, yielded the A's runs in the sixth inning. Vic Harris batted in three runs for the Rangers with a single and triple and Jeff Burroughs hit a two-run homer.

[DH] Padres 6, Braves 4 (day game) / Braves 6, Padres 2 at Atlanta (day game):
Hank Aaron hit his 682nd and 683rd homers, leaving him 31 shy of Babe Ruth's career record of 714, as the Braves split a doubleheader with the Padres, losing the first game, 6-4, and winning the second game, 6-2. Aaron delivered his homer in the lidlifter as a pinch-hitter with a man on base in the ninth inning. Jerry Morales and Johnny Grubb led the Padres' attack, driving in five runs between them. Aaron started the nightcap in left field and broke a 2-2 tie with his second smash of the day in the third inning.

[DH] Cubs 4, Phillies 2 (day game) / Cubs 9, Phillies 3 at Chicago (day game):
After Fergie Jenkins beat Steve Carlton, 4-2, in the first game of a doubleheader, the Cubs completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory over the Phillies in the second game. Jenkins gave up a two-run homer by Greg Luzinski in the first inning, but then scattered six hits the rest of the way. The Cubs took advantage of two errors, one by Carlton, to go ahead with three runs in the fifth. Ron Santo walked, Carmen Fanzone was safe on a boot by Cesar Tovar and Carlton threw wildly on a bunt by Randy Hundley, allowing Santo to score. Don Kessinger singled to plate Fanzone. Hundley then scored as Jenkins grounded into a double play. In the nightcap, Jose Cardenal drove in three runs for the Cubs with a homer and single. Rick Monday also homered, while Santo had four straight hits. Bob Boone homered for the Phillies.

Reds 2, Astros 0 at Houston (day game):
Jack Billingham, who split even in four decisions against the Astros last season, pitched the Reds to a 2-0 victory over his former teammates. Bobby Tolan homered in the fourth inning to pin the defeat on Ken Forsch. The Reds' other run counted off reliever Jim Crawford in the eighth on a walk to Joe Morgan, his theft of second, throwing error by catcher Larry Howard and a wild pitch.

Mets 6, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Led by Jim Beauchamp, who drove in four runs with a pair of singles, the Mets posted a 6-4 victory to complete the sweep of a three-game series with the slumping Pirates, who went down to their fifth straight defeat and 13th in the last 17 games. Beauchamp batted in his first two runs with a single in the fourth before the Mets added four more in the fifth. Jim McAndrew and Ted Martinez walked. Jim Fregosi singled to score McAndrew. Martinez crossed the plate when Cleon Jones forced Fregosi. Rusty Staub doubled and Beauchamp followed with his second single for two runs that provided the Mets' winning margin.

Dodgers 15, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
The Dodgers exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning in the N. L.'s biggest scoring stanza of the season so far and trounced the Giants, 15-3. Joe Ferguson homered with two men on base during the outburst and Davey Lopes, who batted twice, also accounted for three with a homer and single. Ferguson finished the game with four RBIs. Ron Cey and Willie Davis each had four of the Dodgers' 20 hits. Cey drove in five runs, while Davis scored four times. The Dodger hit and run totals represented their season highs.

Cardinals 3, Expos 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Coming from behind, the Cardinals scored three runs in the eighth inning to enable Bob Gibson to defeat the Expos, 3-2. Bill Stoneman held the Cardinals to only two hits until losing his stuff in the eighth. Mike Tyson singled to start the stanza and Tim McCarver walked. Lou Brock forced Tyson at third and Jose Cruz flied out, but Joe Torre singled to score McCarver. After Ted Simmons walked to load the bases, Bernie Carbo singled to drive in the tying and winning runs.
