Red Sox 1, Orioles 0 at Boston (night game):
Breaking up a scoreless duel, designated hitter Orlando Cepeda drove in a run with a single in the 11th inning to give the Red Sox a 1-0 victory over the Orioles, who were shut out for the seventh time in 31 games this season. Mario Guerrero beat out an infield hit to open the 11th. Carl Yastrzemski sacrificed and, after an intentional pass to Reggie Smith, Cepeda ended the game with his single.

Angels 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
With two out in the 10th inning, the Angels scored on successive singles by Jim Spencer, Rudy Meoli and pinch-hitter Tommy McCraw to defeat the Royals, 3-2. The Royals picked up their initial run in the third on a walk and singles by Amos Otis and John Mayberry. Frank Robinson homered with a man on base for the Angels in the fourth, but Lou Piniella tied the score with a circuit clout in the Royals' half.

Indians 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
John Lowenstein scored one run and drove in another to enable the Indians to defeat the Brewers, 2-1, to end their string of 10 straight losses in Milwaukee County Stadium dating back to June 2, 1971. Lowenstein singled in the second inning and crossed the plate on a single by Chris Chambliss and sacrifice fly by Frank Duffy. Dave Duncan was hit by a pitch in the sixth and counted the deciding run on a double by Lowenstein.

Tigers 8, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Joe Coleman posted his first shutout of the season, pitching the Tigers to an 8-0 victory over the Yankees. Coleman allowed six hits, while the Tigers collected 12, including two apiece by Aurelio Rodriguez, Frank Howard, Bill Freehan and Ike Brown.

A's 5, White Sox 1 at Oakland (night game):
In a meeting between two of the A. L.'s leading pitchers, Ken Holtzman triumphed over Wilbur Wood as the Athletics defeated the White Sox, 5-1. Reggie Jackson's bat supplied the difference. The A's outfielder homered with two men on base in the first inning and added an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Ray Fosse homered for the A's other run, while Dick Allen connected for the circuit to account for the White Sox tally. Wood, whose record slipped to 8-3, was stopped on his seven-game winning streak. Holtzman brought his record to 7-2.

[DH] Rangers 7, Twins 6 (night game) / Twins 6, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Homers were decisive in a split of a twi-night doubleheader as the Rangers won the first game, 7-6, and the Twins took the second game, 6-4, in 11 innings. The Rangers, who were trailing in the opener, 6-5, opened the ninth with a single by pinch-hitter Mike Epstein. Jim Mason forced Epstein and Vic Harris struck out, but Toby Harrah then hit his first homer of the season for two runs to win the game. In the nightcap, Bobby Darwin homered in the 11th inning to break a 4-4 tie and the Twins went on to add an insurance run on a single by Steve Braun and two errors.

Braves 7, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Mike Lum batted in three runs with a double in the seventh inning and added a homer in the ninth to pace the Braves to a 7-1 victory over the Astros. The Braves began the seventh with a run on a walk and two errors. Hank Aaron drew a pass to load the bases and Dusty Baker was hit by a pitch to force in another before Lum smashed his double.

Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Ron Fairly homered in the 10th inning to give the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Pirates, who suffered their sixth straight defeat and 14th in the last 19 games.

Padres 7, Giants 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres broke a tight game apart with five runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Giants, 7-1. Bobby Bonds homered for the Giants' run in the first. The Padres, after tying the score in the third, opened the seventh with a single by Dave Hilton. Mike Corkins bunted and both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Enzo Hernandez walked and Johnny Grubb singled for the tie-breaking tally to chase Tom Bradley, who made his first appearance on the mound for the Giants since hurting his ankle April 17. Jerry Morales singled off reliever Elias Sosa to drive in Corkins. A triple by Cito Gaston added two runs and Fred Kendall scratched a single to deep short to score Gaston.

Phillies 10, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Ken Brett, who pitched seven innings before going out for a pinch-hitter, gained his first N. L. victory when the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 10-5. Brett helped with his bat, driving in a run with a single, when the Phillies scored six times in the fourth inning.
