Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Red Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
After giving up a run in the first inning, Doyle Alexander checked the Red Sox over the remainder of the route and pitched the Orioles to a 3-1 victory. The Red Sox got on the scoreboard with a walk to Tommy Harper, single by Carl Yastrzemski and double by Orlando Cepeda. Paul Blair hit his first homer of the season for the Orioles to tie the score in the second. A walk to Bobby Grich, single by Tommy Davis and sacrifice fly by Don Baylor added the go-ahead run in the third. Blair singled in the sixth and counted the final tally on a double by Boog Powell.

Angels 9, Rangers 1 at California (night game):
In his first start since his May 15 no-hitter against the Royals, Nolan Ryan added three more hitless innings to his string before it was broken, but the Angels' righthander easily defeated the Rangers, 9-1. The Rangers bunched a double by Mike Epstein and singles by Jeff Burroughs and Vic Harris for their run in the fourth. Bob Oliver drove in four runs for the Angels, hitting a homer with two aboard in the first inning and walking with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Twins 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Larry Hisle had a perfect day at bat with four hits and a walk in support of Bert Blyleven, who pitched the Twins to an 8-3 victory over the White Sox. Hisle scored three runs and batted in two. Tony Oliva, who had two singles, accounted for three RBIs. Rick Reichardt drove in all three White Sox runs with a homer and double.

Indians 6, Yankees 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Dave Duncan smashed two homers and John Ellis hit one as the Indians snapped their three-game losing streak by defeating the Yankees, 6-4. Duncan's first homer of the game was good for three runs in the first inning, coming after singles by George Hendrick and Charlie Spikes. The Indians' catcher followed with a solo swat in the third and on Fritz Peterson's next pitch, Ellis also hit for the circuit.

Tigers 4, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Joe Coleman registered his eighth victory of the season when Ed Brinkman hit a two-run triple for the Tigers in the ninth inning to beat the Brewers, 4-2. A homer by Jim Northrup in the second and a walk to Dick McAuliffe, sacrifice by Mickey Stanley and single by Aurelio Rodriguez in the seventh gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead before Pedro Garcia doubled and Don Money homered to tie the score in the eighth. Stanley singled in the ninth, Aurelio Rodriguez walked and both scored when center fielder Dave May missed an attempted shoestring catch of a low liner by Brinkman.

Royals 5, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
The Royals accounted for all their runs with three homers off Vida Blue in the sixth inning to defeat the Athletics, 5-2. Paul Schaal opened the bombardment. After two out, Kurt Bevacqua doubled, John Mayberry walked and Amos Otis and Lou Piniella homered in succession.

Dodgers 7, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
A sudden storm that brought wind, rain and hail forced the postponement of the game between the Dodgers and Braves in the top half of 13th inning with the score tied, 7-7. The Braves, who were trailing, 6-1, forced the game into overtime by rallying for five runs in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Dick Dietz capped the outburst with a three-run double. The Dodgers went ahead again with a run in the 12th, but the Braves pulled even in their half when Davey Johnson was hit by a pitch and raced home on a double by Mike Lum. The Dodgers had a man on second with one out in the 13th when the game was brought to an abrupt stop.

Reds 10, Padres 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench batted in five runs with an infield out, single and homer to lead the Reds to a 10-4 victory over the Padres. Pete Rose hit two doubles and a triple, driving in two runs. The Reds collected a total of only nine hits but benefited from 12 walks. Bench's homer with a man on base in the sixth inning was his 10th of the season, but only his first of the year at Riverfront Stadium.

Astros 2, Giants 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros scored twice in the first inning and Don Wilson made those runs stand up for a 2-1 victory over the Giants. Back-to-back triples by Jim Wynn and Roger Metzger and a sacrifice fly by Bob Watson produced the Astros' markers. The Giants got their lone run on a homer by Gary Matthews in the fourth.

Pirates 4, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
Jon Matlack, making his first start since being hit in the forehead by a line drive May 8, pitched six scoreless innings, but the Pirates tagged reliever Tug McGraw for two homers and beat the Mets in 10 innings, 4-1. Showing that he was not gun-shy, Matlack struck out first the three Pirates' batters of the game. However, he allowed nine hits before being removed. Rusty Staub homered for the Mets' run in the sixth and Bob Robertson tied the score with a circuit clout in the ninth. Rennie Stennett opened the 10th with a single and took second on a sacrifice by Gene Clines but was out at third on a grounder by Dave Cash. Manny Sanguillen beat out an infield hit and Willie Stargell then smashed his 11th homer of the season for the winning runs.

[DH] Phillies 3, Cubs 0 (night game) / Cubs 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ken Brett posted his first N. L. shutout and snapped Glenn Beckert's 26-game hitting streak as the Phillies won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-0, but the Cubs came back behind the hitting of Billy Williams to take the nightcap, 7-6. Brett allowed only three hits. Williams whacked a single, double and homer for the Cubs in the second game and drove in four runs. Pat Bourque, recalled from Wichita (American Association) to replace Joe Pepitone, who was traded to the Braves, had two hits and drove in one run with a double. The Cubs counted what proved to be their winning run in the fifth when Jose Cardenal doubled, Randy Hundley singled and Paul Popovich hit a sacrifice fly.
