Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A two-run single by Luis Aparicio and two-run double by Carl Yastrzemski enabled the Red Sox to defeat the Orioles, 4-1. Luis Tiant, who was the winner on a four-hitter, beat the Orioles for the fifth straight time over a two-season span. After the Orioles scored their run in the first inning on a double by Al Bumbry and single by Boog Powell, Jim Palmer protected the lead until the seventh when Rick Miller doubled, Dwight Evans and Tommy Harper walked and Aparicio hit his single. Yastrzemski's double in the ninth iced the decision.

Indians 10, Yankees 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Coming off the ropes, Gaylord Perry avoided a knockout in the second inning and pitched the Indians to a 10-5 victory over the Yankees. Perry was tagged for four runs on five hits in his shaky stanza, including a two-run triple by Gene Michael. The only Yankee run thereafter came on a homer by Thurman Munson in the fourth. Buddy Bell, Charlie Spikes, Dave Duncan and George Hendrick drove in two runs apiece for the Indians. Bell had four hits. Hendrick homered with a man on base in the third to snap a 4-4 tie.

A's 5, Royals 0 at Oakland (day game):
Catfish Hunter scattered eight hits and pitched the Athletics to a 5-0 victory over the Royals. The A's also had eight hits, but they included a double and homer by Deron Johnson and two doubles by Sal Bando.

Giants 9, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Led by Chris Speier, who drove in four runs, the Giants salvaged the finale of their four-game series with the Astros by posting a 9-4 victory. Speier tripled to account for two of the Giants' four runs in the first inning. Garry Maddox led off the seventh with a homer and, after Gary Matthews singled, Speier also hit for the circuit. Ed Goodson added a round-tripper in the ninth. Jim Wynn hit a homer for the Astros.

Pirates 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Continuing to have his troubles, Steve Carlton was knocked out in the seventh inning as the Phillies lost to the Pirates, 5-4. However, Mac Scarce was the loser in relief when the Pirates scored in the ninth on a single by Gene Alley, sacrifice by Milt May and single by Richie Zisk, who batted for Steve Blass. The Phillies took a 4-0 lead with the aid of a two-run homer by Greg Luzinski, but Willie Stargell homered for the Pirates in the fourth, Blass drove in a run with a single in the fifth and Manny Sanguillen tied the score with a two-run homer in the sixth.
