Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Brewers 3 at Boston (night game):
Manager Eddie Kasko juggled the batting order of the Red Sox, who responded by leaving only two men on base while defeating the Brewers, 5-3. The Red Sox scored four of their runs in the fourth inning after Rick Miller and Carl Yastrzemski singled and Orlando Cepeda was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rico Petrocelli singled, driving in two tallies. Tommy Harper walked to fill the sacks again. Luis Aparicio forced Harper, Cepeda scoring, and when Tim Johnson lost the ball trying to turn a double play, Petrocelli also crossed the plate.

White Sox 5, Angels 3 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox broke the six-game winning streak of Bill Singer by jumping on the righthander for four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Angels, 5-3. Singles by Ken Henderson, Dick Allen and Bill Melton produced the first run in the outburst. After Rick Reichardt forced Melton, designated hitter Carlos May smashed a homer for the winning blow.

Yankees 6, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Joe Coleman, winner of eight games, was handed his third loss when the Yankees scored with two out in the ninth inning to defeat the Tigers, 6-5. Coleman gave up a single to Gene Michael to open the stanza. Horace Clarke sacrificed. Roy White was retired, but Matty Alou doubled to drive in the winning run.

Twins 8, Royals 6 at Minnesota (night game):
Harmon Killebrew had his first three-hit, three-RBI game of the season to help the Twins defeat the Royals, 8-6. Lou Piniella hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career in the third inning when the Royals erupted for five runs to take a 5-1 lead. A homer by Larry Hisle, walk to Rod Carew and singles by Tony Oliva and Killebrew gave the Twins two runs in the fourth and they went ahead with four more in the sixth on a walk to Hisle, singles by Carew and Oliva, double by Killebrew, sacrifice fly by Bobby Darwin and single by Danny Thompson. After the Royals picked up a tally in the sixth, Killebrew accounted for his third hit and third RBI with a single in the Twins' half.

A's 8, Rangers 6 at Oakland (night game):
After the first three innings wound up in a 6-6 tie, the Athletics scored twice in the sixth with the aid of an error and defeated the Rangers, 8-6. Reggie Jackson doubled home two runs for the A's in the first, but the Rangers jumped on Vida Blue for five in the second, including a two-run homer by Dave Nelson. The A's came back with four runs in their half, three scoring on a homer by Sal Bando. The Rangers pulled even in the third when Jeff Burroughs walked and Vic Harris tripled. In the sixth, Rich McKinney led off with a single and when Dick Green bunted, Bill Sudakis threw wildly to second. McKinney reached third and Green took second on the error. Bill North then singled to plate McKinney and Bert Campaneris lofted a sacrifice fly to score Green.

Reds 4, Astros 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Coming back after a rally by the Astros in the ninth inning, the Reds scored on a two-out single by Dave Concepcion, driving in Johnny Bench, to post a 4-3 victory. With two out, the Astros tied the score with three extra-base hits -- a double by Jesus Alou and triples by Tommie Agee and Roger Metzger. In the Reds' half, Bench singled. After Tony Perez struck out, Cesar Geronimo sacrificed to set the stage for Concepcion's winning hit.

Padres 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A single by Fred Kendall after two walks in the eighth inning produced the run that gave the Padres a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers. The Padres scored twice in the fourth and took a 3-1 lead when Mike Corkins homered in the fifth, but the Dodgers tied the score with circuit clouts by Willie Crawford and Bill Russell in the seventh.

Cubs 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Five of the 10 walks issued by Expos' pitchers helped the Cubs gain a 4-2 victory in 10 innings. After the Expos took a 2-0 lead, Gene Hiser walked for the Cubs in the seventh and Glenn Beckert singled. Billy Williams and Jim Hickman walked to force in one run and Ron Santo singled to drive in the tying tally. In the 10th, Hickman and Santo drew passes. Jose Cardenal bunted and was safe on an error by Tom Walker. Ken Rudolph singled to drive in Hickman. Don Kessinger followed with a sacrifice fly to score Santo with an extra run.
