Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
The Indians smashed four homers, accounting for six of their runs, and defeated the White Sox, 8-3. Chris Chambliss hit for the circuit after a walk to Buddy Bell in the first inning. Oscar Gamble added a solo swat in the fourth. Charlie Spikes homered following a pass to Chambliss in the fifth and Dave Duncan capped the slugging with a bases-empty drive in the seventh.

Tigers 1, A's 0 at Detroit (night game):
Breaking up a scoreless game, Dick Sharon singled with the bases loaded in the 13th inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 victory over the Athletics. Mickey Stanley opened the stanza with a double and beat the throw to third when Bill Freehan grounded to Dal Maxvill. An intentional pass to Duke Sims then set the stage for Sharon's game-winning hit.

Angels 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
After hitting a homer in the fifth inning, Vada Pinson followed with a triple in the sixth when the Angels scored three runs to defeat the Brewers, 5-3. Jeff Torborg singled to start the sixth and was forced by Billy Grabarkewitz, who then scored on Pinson's triple. Mike Epstein singled to drive in Pinson and scored himself on a double by Bob Oliver.

Royals 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Singles by Ed Kirkpatrick and pinch-hitters Kurt Bevacqua and Gail Hopkins produced a run in the 10th inning to give the Royals a 5-4 victory over the Twins. Kirkpatrick hit a two-run homer for the Royals in the third. The Twins, who had a round-tripper by George Mitterwald, tied the score at 4-4 with two runs in the ninth on a bases-loaded single by Larry Hisle.

Yankees 9, Rangers 7 at New York (night game):
The Yankees, who were losing 7-0 after 1 1/3 innings, rallied to defeat the Rangers, 9-7, capping their comeback with a three-run homer by Gene Michael. With the Rangers still ahead, 7-5, Graig Nettles led off the seventh inning with a single and Thurman Munson walked. Ron Blomberg delivered a pinch-single to score pinch-runner Celerino Sanchez. With runners on first and second, Michael prepared to sacrifice, but the pitch from Steve Foucault was high. On the next delivery, Michael swung away and connected for his homer.

Cubs 7, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Rick Reuschel and Bob Locker combined on a four-hitter and pitched the Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the Reds. Reuschel developed a blister on the index finger of his pitching hand and left the game after giving up the Reds' first run in the fifth inning. Johnny Bench homered off Locker in the eighth. Ron Santo hit two doubles and drove in a pair of runs for the Cubs. Don Kessinger also accounted for two RBIs with a single and Jose Cardenal contributed a homer to the Cubs' attack.

Dodgers 6, Mets 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Willie Crawford ended a 20-inning scoring drouth by the Dodgers with the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to lead the way to a 6-4 victory over the Mets before a Cap Night crowd of 53,825. An error by Bud Harrelson and singles by Manny Mota and Ron Cey loaded the bases for Crawford's clout in the fifth inning to wipe out the Mets' 3-0 lead. The Dodgers added what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth on a double by Bill Buckner, passed ball and sacrifice fly by Joe Ferguson. Mota drove in an extra run with a single in the eighth.

Astros 7, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Astros, who had never beaten Bob Moose previously, losing seven times, finally turned the trick with an 11-hit attack to defeat the Pirates, 7-2. Lee May led the way with two homers, driving in three runs. Jim Wynn accounted for two RBIs with a single. Jerry Reuss held the Pirates to five hits and gave up their runs in the seventh inning when Bob Robertson doubled and Al Oliver homered.

Phillies 8, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Bill Robinson rapped a pair of two-run homers to lead the Phillies' 14-hit attack in an 8-1 victory over the Padres. Robinson singled and scored in the seventh inning before connecting for his homers in the eighth and ninth. Willie Montanez, who had four hits in the game, was on base both times.

Expos 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Expos snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Giants, 5-2. The Giants' runs came on homers by Ed Goodson and Dave Kingman. In the ninth, Tim Foli singled for the Expos, took second on a sacrifice and scored the tie-breaking run on a single by Ron Hunt. Ron Woods drove in Hunt with a double and then crossed the plate himself on a pair of wild pitches by Randy Moffitt.

Cardinals 4, Braves 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Alan Foster pitched a five-hitter and came out ahead in his duel with Ron Reed when the Cardinals scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Braves, 4-1. Ralph Garr homered for the Braves' run. The Cards, after tying the score with the aid of an error by Reed in the sixth, opened the eighth with a single by Ted Sizemore. Tim McCarver sacrificed. Following an intentional pass to Ted Simmons, Jose Cruz doubled to drive in Sizemore. Reed then passed Luis Melendez intentionally to load the bases. Ken Reitz forced Simmons at the plate, but Mike Tyson singled to drive in two runs.
