Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Indians 3 at Chicago (night game):
The Indians and White Sox battled to a 2-2 tie in a four-hour, 39-minute game suspended after 16 innings because of the A. L.'s 1 a.m. (local time) curfew. The action was delayed at one point for 17 minutes by rain. The White Sox started the scoring in the fifth on a safe bunt by Jorge Orta, wild throw by Buddy Bell and single by Eddie Leon. The Indians pulled even in the seventh when John Lowenstein doubled and Dave Duncan singled. Then the Indians went ahead in the eighth with a single by Tom Ragland and double by Frank Duffy, but Bill Melton tied the score with a homer in the White Sox' half. The game was completed on May 28.

Tigers 8, A's 5 at Detroit (day game):
Jim Northrup snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run triple for his 1,000th major league hit to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Athletics. Rich Reese walked and Dick Sharon, bunting, was safe on an error by Gene Tenace before Northrup rapped a drive to the 415-foot mark in right-center field. Aurelio Rodriguez scored Northrup with a sacrifice fly. Rodriguez had an earlier homer, while Tenace and Deron Johnson each hit one for the Athletics.

Brewers 9, Angels 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Jim Colborn, who has been undefeated since losing the opening-day game to the Orioles, posted his fifth straight victory for the Brewers, shutting out the Angels on four hits, 9-0.

Orioles 7, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Elrod Hendricks drove in two runs with a double and Don Baylor accounted for two tallies with a pair of singles to pace the Orioles to a 7-2 victory over the Twins in a game stopped after seven innings by rain. Tommy Davis and Al Bumbry added solo homers in support of Mike Cuellar, who limited the Twins to five hits.

Yankees 10, Rangers 5 at New York (day game):
Two homers accounted for five runs in the second inning and sent the Yankees on their way to a 10-5 victory over the Rangers. With the Rangers leading, 3-2, Celerino Sanchez walked in the second and Gene Michael followed with a homer. Roy White and Matty Alou then singled and Bobby Murcer also hit for the circuit. Murcer produced his fourth RBI with a single in the sixth.

Cubs 2, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
While Milt Pappas and Jack Aker combined on a five-hitter, the Cubs scored twice in the third inning and defeated the Reds, 2-0. Pappas touched off the Cubs' scoring stanza with a single and was forced by Rick Monday. Don Kessinger tripled to drive in Monday and scored himself on a single by Billy Williams.

Dodgers 9, Mets 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Willie Davis collected four hits and Joe Ferguson, Von Joshua and Bill Russell rapped three apiece as the Dodgers defeated the Mets, 9-5. Russell batted in four runs. Ferguson capped the Dodgers' scoring with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Pirates 7, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Nelson Briles, who joined in the Pirates' attack with a double and homer before being relieved in the eighth inning, received credit for a 7-2 victory over the Astros. Jim Wynn homered for the Astros in the eighth and when two more hits followed, Dave Giusti took over and finished the game. The Pirates decided the contest with four runs in the fifth, two scoring on a triple by Al Oliver. Briles hit his homer in the sixth.

Phillies 4, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Ending his personal four-game losing streak, Steve Carlton pitched the Phillies to a 4-0 victory over the Padres. The southpaw's season mark now was 5-6, exactly matching his record last May 30 before he went on to win 22 of his last 26 decisions. Carlton, who struck out 12, allowed four hits. Mike Caldwell was the loser, although yielding only three hits. The Phillies scored once in the seventh on a walk to Mike Schmidt and double by Bob Boone. Three other runs followed in the eighth. Mike Anderson began with a walk, Carlton sacrificed and Cesar Tovar was passed intentionally. Larry Bowa singled, scoring Anderson. Tovar took third and counted on a sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez. Bowa also crossed the plate when Caldwell was charged with an error on the throw from the outfield.

Giants 10, Expos 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Enjoying a perfect day at the plate, Garry Maddox rapped four singles and a double and drove in four runs as the Giants defeated the Padres, 10-3. Three of Maddox' RBIs came on his double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Tom Bradley gained his first victory since April 17, but needed help from Elias Sosa in the seventh when the Expos scored all their runs on singles by Bob Bailey and Tim Foli and doubles by Hal Breeden and Ron Hunt.

Cardinals 2, Braves 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Gibson squared his career record against the Braves at 19-19 by pitching the Cardinals to a 2-0 victory in a game stopped by rain after 7½ innings. The Dodgers, with a 20-16 record against Gibson, now are the only club with an edge over the veteran righthander. The Cardinals, winning their fourth straight game, got their first run against the Braves in the fifth on a double by Ken Reitz, infield hit by Mike Tyson and a wild pitch by Phil Niekro. Singles by Ted Sizemore, Tim McCarver and Jose Cruz added the other tally in the sixth.
