Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] Royals 13, Red Sox 3 (day game) / Red Sox 7, Royals 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Led by John Mayberry, who drove in five runs, the Royals powered their way to a 13-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Red Sox gained a split by winning the second game, 7-2. Mayberry hit two doubles and two singles in the lidlifter in support of Gene Garber, who made his first start of the season. Ed Kirkpatrick homered with two men on base and Gail Hopkins with one aboard for the other big blows in the Royals' attack. In the nightcap, the Red Sox had a pair of three-run innings. Carl Yastrzemski knocked in two tallies with a single in the third and Orlando Cepeda followed with a run-scoring single. Rico Petrocelli and John Kennedy rapped run-producing doubles in the fifth and Luis Aparicio added a run with the single.
Rangers 5, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
The Rangers erupted for four runs in the fourth inning on doubles by Jim Spencer and Dave Nelson and ended their eight-game losing streak by defeating the Yankees, 5-2. Alex Johnson and Larry Biittner, who singled, scored on Spencer's double. Two outs later, after Jim Mason was safe on an error, Nelson hit his double. The Rangers added their final run on a pass to Vic Harris with the bases loaded in the sixth.
Cubs 6, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Fergie Jenkins allowed only three hits and pitched the Cubs to a 6-0 victory over the Reds. Jenkins retired the first 12 batters in succession before rain forced a 51-minute delay. When play resumed, Johnny Bench singled for the Reds' first hit. The Cubs were held in check by Jim McGlothlin until the seventh inning when they erupted for three runs on a double by Ron Santo, single by Jose Cardenal, double by Randy Hundley and single by Don Kessinger. Three other runs counted off Pedro Borbon in the ninth on singles by Cardenal and Pat Bourque, triple by Kessinger and double by Jenkins.
Dodgers 2, Mets 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Don Sutton helped himself by driving in one run with a sacrifice fly and Joe Ferguson accounted for another run with a homer to enable the Dodgers to defeat the Mets, 2-1. Ron Cey doubled in the second inning and Willie Crawford and Bill Russell walked to load the bases before Sutton delivered his run-scoring fly off Jerry Koosman. After Ferguson hit for the circuit in the fifth, pinch-hitter Ken Boswell spoiled Sutton's shutout bid with a homer for the Mets in the eighth.
Astros 6, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Lee May drove in three runs with a homer, double and single to support the five-hit pitching of Dave Roberts as the Astros defeated the Pirates, 6-2. Fernando Gonzalez hit his first major league homer for the Pirates.
[DH] Phillies 4, Padres 3 (day game) / Phillies 6, Padres 4 at San Diego (day game):
Del Unser, who hit a homer to win the first game, drove in four more runs in the second game as the Phillies swept over the Padres in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 6-4. The Phils scored three runs in the first inning of the lidlifter on only one hit, a single by Cesar Tovar, together with three errors, a hit batsman, a walk and sacrifice fly. Unser then hit his homer in the fifth to produce what proved to be the winning run. Dave Roberts homered for the Padres. In the nightcap, the Phillies exploded for five runs in the fourth inning, three scoring on a bases-loaded double by Unser, who had three hits in the game and added his other RBI in the sixth.
Giants 6, Expos 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Functioning together as the battery, Ron Bryant and Dave Rader each drove in two runs as the Giants defeated the Expos, 6-3. Bryant started himself on the way to victory by knocking in the Giants' first two runs with a bases-loaded single in the second inning. Rader batted in a run with a double in the sixth and hit an inside-the-park homer in the eighth.
Cardinals 5, Braves 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Hank Aaron batted in two runs with his 686th homer and added an RBI with a single, but that was not enough for the Braves, who lost to the Cardinals, 5-4. Aaron now was 28 homers short of Babe Ruth's 714 career record. The Cardinals, in posting their fifth straight victory, were helped by three unearned runs.
