Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 2, Angels 1 at Boston (night game):
A two-run homer by designated hitter Orlando Cepeda enabled the Red Sox to defeat the Angels, 2-1. The Angels put together singles by Sandy Alomar, Bobby Brooks and Bob Oliver for a run in the first inning, but Reggie Smith walked in the second and Cepeda followed with his homer to beat Nolan Ryan. Bill Lee was the winner with the help of Bobby Bolin, who saved the game by retiring Tommy McCraw on a fly with the bases loaded in the eighth.
Orioles 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A double by Paul Blair for his third hit of the game and a single by Brooks Robinson supplied a run for the Orioles in the eighth inning to defeat the Royals, 3-2. The Royals were victims of bad luck in their half after Amos Otis tripled. Jim Palmer threw a wild pitch over catcher Andy Etchebarren's head, but the ball struck the concrete behind home plate and bounced directly back to Etchebarren, who tossed to Palmer for the tag on Otis trying to score.
Twins 1, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
With a homer by Bobby Darwin in the seventh inning accounting for the only run, Bert Blyleven pitched the Twins to a 1-0 victory over the Brewers to register his second straight shutout.
Yankees 7, A's 1 at New York (night game):
The Yankees smashed four homers, including three in one inning, and defeated the Athletics, 7-1. Catfish Hunter, who started for the A's, set down the Yankees in the first for his 27th consecutive scoreless inning before his string was snapped when Ron Blomberg singled and Graig Nettles homered. Horace Clarke opened the third with a single and Roy White followed with a homer. After Matty Alou flied out, Bobby Murcer hit for the circuit. Blomberg doubled to kayo Hunter. Nettles then greeted Paul Lindblad with his second homer of the game and the Yankees' third of the inning.
Indians 9, Rangers 7 at Texas (night game):
The Indians packed all their scoring in the first four innings, capping their attack with a two-run double by George Hendrick, to defeat the Rangers, 9-7. The Rangers scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-3 lead before the Indians erupted for four runs in the third. Singles by Charlie Spikes and Hendrick, around a walk to Dave Duncan, produced the first tally. After Tom Ragland was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Frank Duffy drove in two runs with a single and Buddy Bell added a marker with another single.
Cubs 7, Astros 1 at Chicago (day game):
Bases-loaded singles by Jose Cardenal and Randy Hundley produced four runs in the first inning and started the Cubs on their way to a 7-1 victory over the Astros. Jerry Reuss, who started for the Astros, retired only one batter before being kayoed. The Cubs loaded the bases when Rick Monday walked, Glenn Beckert singled and Ron Santo walked after one out. Jose Cardenal singled to drive in the first two runs. After another walk to Jim Hickman reloaded the sacks, Hundley singled to add two more tallies.
Dodgers 9, Phillies 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Joe Ferguson hit a pair of two-run doubles and increased his league-leading RBI total to 41 as the Dodgers defeated the Phillies, 9-3. After Bill Robinson homered for the Phillies in the second inning, Ferguson put the Dodgers ahead with his first double in the third. The catcher's second two-bagger accounted for two of the Dodgers' three runs in the fifth.
Pirates 6, Braves 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Luke Walker and Jim Rooker combined on a seven-hitter as the Pirates defeated the Braves, 6-1. Walker, who worked the first seven innings, gave up five hits and yielded the Braves' run on a triple by Ralph Garr and single by Darrell Evans. Walker batted in one of the Pirates' runs while trying to sacrifice. His bunt trickled into the outfield for a hit to score Milt May. Willie Stargell batted in two runs with a single and homer.
Mets 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Tom Seaver yielded only three hits, struck out 16 and smashed a homer in his own behalf, but was in danger of losing until the Mets erupted for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Giants, 5-2. Seaver, who hit for the circuit in the fifth, fell behind when Tito Fuentes doubled and Willie McCovey homered in the sixth. Ken Boswell walked to open the Mets' rally in the ninth, Bud Harrelson singled and Seaver bunted safely to load the bases. Wayne Garrett drew a walk to force in the tying run. Felix Millan then singled to drive in two tallies and later scored himself on a sacrifice fly by George Theodore.
Cardinals 2, Reds 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Scipio Spinks, who had been sidelined by an inflamed shoulder, made his first start since May 1 and combined with Diego Segui to beat the Reds, 2-0, for the Cardinals' seventh straight victory. Spinks had previously lost four decisions. The triumph represented poetic justice for the young righthander, who damaged his knee sliding into Johnny Bench in a game with the Reds last July 4 and was out of action for the balance of the season. The Cardinals scored an unearned run off Clay Carroll in the third inning and added their other tally off Pedro Borbon in the seventh when Tim McCarver singled, advanced to second after a long fly by Ted Simmons and scored on a single by Ken Reitz.
