Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Angels 1 at Boston (night game):
Dwight Evans singled and scored in the third inning and homered in the seventh to supply the Red Sox' runs in a 2-1 victory over the Angels. To cap his night, Evans also made a leaping catch against the right field wall to deprive Mike Epstein of a possible tying homer in the ninth.

Tigers 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Ellie Rodriguez drove in one run with a single and two more with a homer to lead the Tigers' 14-hit attack in an 8-3 victory over the White Sox. Gates Brown also homered for the Tigers, while Jim Northrup, who reached base four times with two doubles, a single and walk, scored three runs and batted in one. Bill Melton homered in the second inning for the White Sox and that run stood up until the Tigers pulled away with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Orioles 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Dave McNally broke his personal six-game losing streak with credit for a 5-4 victory over the Royals, but the Orioles almost blew the game in the ninth inning before Bob Reynolds retired the last two batters to save the victory. McNally was lifted in the seventh after giving up the Royals' second run. Eddie Watt, who relieved, was knocked out with one away in the ninth when the Royals scored twice on a walk, triple by Paul Schaal and single by Freddie Patek. Rich Coggins drove in two runs and scored one for the Orioles.

Twins 4, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bill Hands pitched the Twins second straight shutout and Bobby Darwin hit a three-run homer to mark a 4-0 victory over the Brewers. Darwin also hit a homer to account for the Twins' run in their 1-0 victory behind Bert Blyleven in the previous night's game with the Brewers.

Yankees 4, A's 3 at New York (night game):
After being robbed of a round-tripper in the first inning, Thurman Munson pulled a tie-breaking homer into the left field stands in the eighth to give the Yankees a 4-3 victory over the Athletics. In the first, after the Yankees had scored two runs, Munson smashed a drive to right field, where Reggie Jackson made a running one-handed catch, hit the wall and tumbled into the seats.

Rangers 3, Indians 2 at Texas (night game):
Pete Broberg gained his first victory since last June 13, after losing his last eight decisions in 1972 and first four this year, when the Rangers defeated the Indians, 3-2. With the score tied, 2-2, Ken Suarez singled with one out in the ninth inning. Joe Lovitto, coming in to run, stopped at second on a single by Jim Mason. Jerry Johnson relieved Gaylord Perry and on his first pitch, Dave Nelson singled to score Lovitto with the Rangers' winning run.

Astros 4, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Roger Metzger and Johnny Edwards helped carry the Astros to a 4-1 victory over the Cubs behind the three-hit pitching of Ken Forsch. Metzger, leading off, hit his homer on Milt Pappas' second pitch of the game. Edwards added his round-tripper in the fifth. The Astros' final two runs counted in the sixth on singles by Bob Watson, Lee May and Doug Rader, along with a sacrifice fly by Tommy Helms.

Dodgers 9, Phillies 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers clipped Steve Carlton for 13 hits before knocking out the southpaw in the sixth inning en route to a 9-4 victory over the Phillies. The Dodgers finished the game with a total of 18 hits, including four for Bill Russell, who drove in four runs. Willie Crawford and Ron Cey had three hits and two RBIs apiece. Cey's hits included a homer.

Pirates 4, Braves 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Braves, 4-2. Al Oliver opened the stanza with a single and stole second with one out, leading to an intentional pass to Milt May. Jackie Hernandez wrecked the move with a single to drive in Oliver. Dave Cash added a single after two out to score May with the final run.

[DH] Expos 5, Padres 3 (night game) / Padres 3, Expos 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres, after losing the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-3, ended their six-game losing streak when Johnny Grubb smashed a three-run homer in the eighth inning of the nightcap to beat the Expos, 3-2. Bob Bailey hit two homers for the Expos, driving in three runs, to help Bill Stoneman to his first victory of the season in the lidlifter. However, Stoneman was chased in the seventh inning when the Padres scored two runs. Mike Marshall came in to end the threat by retiring Grubb. It was different in the second game when Marshall relieved again in the eighth after Jerry Morales doubled and Enzo Hernandez beat out a bunt against Mike Torrez. Grubb was at bat and on Marshall's first pitch, the rookie outfielder smashed his winning homer.

Giants 3, Mets 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Tom Bradley helped himself by driving in two runs with a single in the second inning and Tito Fuentes added a homer in the sixth to enable the Giants to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Bradley, who allowed only four hits, was lifted with two out in the eighth after a single by Ken Boswell. Sam McDowell relieved and retired the last four straight batters.

Cardinals 5, Reds 2 at St. Louis (night game):
With two out and a count of two strikes, Lou Brock rapped a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to spark the Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the Reds, extending their winning streak to eight games. Ken Reitz opened the inning with a single and advanced on a sacrifice by Jose Cruz. After Mike Tyson flied out, the Reds passed pinch-hitter Tim McCarver intentionally, only to have Brock upset the applecart with his single, scoring pinch-runner Dwain Anderson and sending McCarver to third. Brock then stole second and two more runs scored on a single by Ted Sizemore.
