Today's scores and summaries:

A's 3, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Catfish Hunter yielded only three hits and pitched the Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Red Sox, who were able to keep the A's scoring down by executing five double plays. The Red Sox had Hunter on the ropes in the second inning, filling the bases on singles by Orlando Cepeda and Danny Cater and walk to Tommy Harper but scored only one run on a sacrifice fly by John Kennedy. The A's tied the score in the third when Angel Mangual tripled and Dick Green singled. Bert Campaneris singled in the sixth, advanced on a sacrifice and a long fly and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Gene Tenace added the clincher with a homer in the seventh.

Royals 5, Indians 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Kurt Bevacqua drove in two runs with a triple in the second inning and scored himself on a double by Steve Hovley to start the Royals off to a 5-1 victory over the Indians. A double by Freddie Patek added the Royals' two other runs in the eighth.

Brewers 3, White Sox 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Ellie Rodriguez, who drove in the Brewers' first two runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning, knocked in another run with a single in the 13th to beat the White Sox, 3-2. Dick Allen homered with a man on base for the White Sox to tie the score in the eighth. George Scott walked in the 13th and took second on a sacrifice but was out trying to score on a single by Ollie Brown. On the throw to plate, Brown took second. Bob Heise then ran for Brown and Cy Acosta took the mound in relief for the White Sox. On his first pitch, Rodriguez singled to drive in the winning run.

Twins 3, Tigers 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Joe Lis, who entered the Twins' lineup in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement for Harmon Killebrew, came through with a homer in the 10th to beat the Tigers, 3-2.

Yankees 2, Angels 0 at New York (day game):
Fritz Peterson and Sparky Lyle combined to outduel Nolan Ryan as the Yankees defeated the Angels, 2-0. Peterson had trouble with his control, walking five and throwing two wild pitches, but allowed just two singles in the first seven innings. Lyle held the Angels hitless in the last two stanzas. The Yankees reached Ryan for a run in the fourth on a single by Bobby Murcer, his theft of second and a single by Ron Blomberg. Thurman Munson walked in the fifth, took third on a single by Gene Michael and scored the last run on a sacrifice fly by Horace Clarke.

Orioles 8, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Tommy Davis drove in three runs with a pair of singles and Al Bumbry accounted for two with a triple as the Orioles defeated the Rangers, 8-3. Brooks Robinson, who was named to The Sporting News' A. L. all-star fielding team for the 13th consecutive time in 1972, received his Gold Glove Award before the game. The ceremony was switched from Baltimore to Texas so that the star's home-state friends from Arkansas could be present. Robinson drove in one of the Orioles' runs with a single in the second inning and scored after drawing a walk in the fourth.

Cubs 4, Braves 3 at Chicago (day game):
Although held to only six hits, the Cubs were able to defeat the Braves, 4-3. A wild pitch by Ron Schueler allowed Jose Cardenal to score what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth inning. With the Braves leading, 3-2, Glenn Beckert singled, took third on a single by Billy Williams and scored the tying run when Cardenal forced Williams. Ron Santo then grounded to Marty Perez, who threw the batter out at first, but Cardenal put on a burst of speed and reached third on the play, in position to score on Schueler's wild pitch.

Expos 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
After surviving trouble in the first inning, Steve Renko pitched the Expos to a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Davey Lopes, Dodgers' rookie second baseman, committed three errors in the first inning, tying the major league record for his position, to allow the Expos to score an unearned run. The Dodgers came back with three runs in their half on a single by Lopes, pass to Joe Ferguson and singles by Willie Crawford and Ron Cey. Bob Bailey homered for the Expos in the fourth and, after a double by Ron Fairly, Ken Singleton also hit for the circuit in the fifth. Two walks, a single by John Boccabella and grounder by Tim Foli added the final pair in the seventh.

Pirates 4, Reds 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates jumped on Jack Billingham for three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Reds, 4-3, for their sixth straight victory. Dave Cash and Manny Sanguillen led off with singles and Richie Hebner doubled to drive in the first run. Willie Stargell walked to load the bases. The second run scored on a groundout by Al Oliver and the third followed when Bob Robertson was out on a smash off Billingham's leg. Billingham was forced to leave the game. The Pirates added what proved to be the deciding run off Tom Hall in the fourth on singles by Oliver and Mily May around a pass to Robertson.

Padres 3, Mets 0 at San Diego (night game):
Clay Kirby turned in his first complete game since last August 5 and posted a 3-0 victory over the Mets, who were shut out by the Padres for the second night in succession. Kirby's triumph was his first since opening day and the start was his first since May 2. The Padres' scoring included Ivan Murrell's first major league homer since August 22, 1971.

Giants 11, Phillies 7 at San Francisco (day game):
Charlie Williams, who was obtained from the Mets in the Willie Mays deal, gained his first victory in a San Francisco uniform when the Giants outslugged the Phillies, 11-7. Williams pitched only one inning in relief of Juan Marichal before going out for a pinch-hitter in the seventh when the Giants scored three runs to go ahead, 8-7. Bobby Bonds homered in the eighth when the Giants wrapped up the decision with three more runs. Greg Luzinski drove in four runs for the Phillies with a homer and single.

Cardinals 6, Astros 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded, Tim McCarver smashed reliever Fred Gladding's first pitch for a grand-slam homer in the eighth inning to carry the Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the Astros. The Cardinals, who were trailing, 2-1, started meekly in the eighth when Ted Sizemore walked with one out and was forced for the second out by Joe Torre. Dwain Anderson ran for Torre and raced home with the tying run when Ted Simmons doubled. An intentional pass to Jose Cruz and infield hit by Luis Melendez loaded the bases. When McCarver was announced as the pinch-hitter for Ken Reitz, the Astros brought Gladding to the mound in a move that backfired with McCarver's slam.
