Today's scores and summaries:

A's 12, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
Vida Blue allowed only four hits in eight innings before yielding the mound to Horacio Pina and picked up an easy victory as the Athletics trounced the Red Sox, 12-1. Sal Bando hit a homer and three singles to lead the A's attack. Blue lost his bid for a shutout when the Red Sox scored in the eighth on two errors and a single by Orlando Cepeda.

Royals 5, Indians 4 at Kansas City (day game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning brought the Royals a 5-4 victory over the Indians. Paul Schaal singled and Gail Hopkins walked to start the comeback. After Kurt Bevacqua bunted into a forceout at third, Cookie Rojas singled to drive in one run. Hal McRae popped up, but John Mayberry walked to load the bases and Amos Otis singled to score the tying and winning runs.

Brewers 7, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
With Jerry Bell pitching a three-hitter, the Brewers defeated the White Sox, 7-1, to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Bell gave up a homer by Carlos May in the first inning, but yielded only a pair of singles by Ed Herrmann thereafter. The Brewers came back in their half of the first with two runs on a single by Don Money, walk to George Scott and singles by Johnny Briggs and Darrell Porter. Briggs hit a homer in the seventh.

Tigers 8, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins held Bat Day, drawing a crowd of 35,815, but the Tigers did the stick-swinging with a grand-slam homer by Dick McAuliffe and two-run smash by Willie Horton to gain an 8-2 victory. Mickey Lolich, the victim of four losses by one-run margins early in the season, won his third straight game to even his record at 5-5.

Yankees 3, Angels 2 at New York (day game):
Playing before a Bat Day crowd of 60,108, the Yankees struck for all their runs in one inning and beat the Angels, 3-2, on Sparky Lyle's clutch relief pitching. In the sixth, Graig Nettles doubled, Thurman Munson walked, Felipe Alou singled, Gene Michael hit a scoring grounder and Horace Clarke doubled to produce the Yankee tallies. In the ninth, Lyle gave up a run-scoring single by Winston Llenas alter replacing Doc Medich but then retired Vada Pinson on a pop fly and Bobby Brooks on a strikeout with the bases loaded to save the game.

Orioles 7, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Dave McNally extended his mastery of the Washington-Texas franchise to 16 straight games by pitching the Orioles to a 7-1 victory over the Rangers in a contest stopped by rain in the top half of the sixth inning. McNally began his string after losing to the former Senators, 9-1, September 12, 1968. In all, his career record against the Washington-Texas clubs is 26-4.

Cubs 3, Braves 0 at Chicago (day game):
Milt Pappas homered in the sixth inning for the Cubs' first run and combined with Bob Locker on a five-hitter to shut out the Braves, 3-0. The Cubs' two other tallies came in the seventh on a single by Ron Santo and homer by Pat Bourque.

Expos 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Hal Breeden drew a walk with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to force in the deciding run and Clyde Mashore smashed a two-run homer in the ninth to clinch the Expos' 4-1 victory over the Dodgers. With the score tied, 1-1, Tim Foli beat out an infield hit in the eighth and, with two out, Ron Woods singled. Al Downing then walked Bob Bailey to load the bases and passed Breeden to send Foli home.

Reds 5, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Tony Perez powered the Reds to a 5-1 victory over the Pirates, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. Clay Carroll led off the third inning with a single and stopped at third on a double by Pete Rose. Luke Walker, pitching for the Pirates, walked Johnny Bench intentionally to load the bases and set the stage for Perez.

Mets 9, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
The Mets, who had been shut out in the first two games of the series, broke loose behind the pitching of Tom Seaver and defeated the Padres, 9-2. The victory was the fifth in a row for Seaver, who was staked to a quick lead in the first inning when John Milner drove in two runs with a single to end the Mets' scoring drouth.

Giants 5, Phillies 4 at San Francisco (day game):
A ninth-inning explosion by the Giants, who smashed a pair of two-run homers, wrecked the Phillies, 5-4. Greg Luzinski hit a homer and two singles, driving in two runs, to help the Phillies take a 4-1 lead, but the Giants opened the ninth with a single by Dave Kingman and homer by Dave Rader to kayo Ken Brett. Mac Scarce walked Willie McCovey before yielding the mound to Billy Wilson, who induced Bobby Bonds to hit into a double play. However, Tito Fuentes then singled and Garry Maddox unloaded a homer to win the game for the Giants.

Cardinals 2, Astros 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Tim McCarver, who won the previous night's game with a grand-slam homer, did it again with a run-scoring single in the 10th inning to give the Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Astros. Lou Brock singled to start and when Ted Sizemore bunted, both runners were safe and advanced an extra base on an error by Tommy Helms, who muffed Jim Crawford's throw to first. Following an intentional pass to Joe Torre, Ted Simmons forced Brock at the plate, but McCarver followed with his single to break up the game.
