Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Royals 3 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox, who profited from three walks, an error and a hit batsman, scored four runs on only two hits in the third inning and went on to defeat the Royals, 9-3. With one run in and with the bases loaded, three runs were forced in when Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemski walked and Orlando Cepeda was hit by a pitch. Fisk homered with two men on base in the sixth.

Brewers 2, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Over-ambitious baserunning by the Athletics proved costly in a 2-0 loss to the Brewers. Three A's, Bert Campaneris among them, were thrown out trying to steal and on another occasion Campaneris was picked off third base by Jim Colborn, who pitched a five-hitter for the Brewers. Bob Coluccio homered in the sixth inning to pin Ken Holtzman with his first defeat since April 28. The Brewers' other run counted in the eighth on a pass to Coluccio, single by Dave May and sacrifice fly by George Scott.

Reds 5, Mets 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
After being held hitless by Jon Matlack for five innings, the Reds erupted for four runs in the sixth and defeated the Mets, 5-0, behind the three-hit hurling of Jack Billingham. Joe Morgan walked with one out and stole second before Johnny Bench flied out. The Mets then passed Tony Perez intentionally in a move that backfired when Dave Concepcion and Bobby Tolan followed with run-scoring singles. Concepcion also scored on a wild pitch. Tolan then crossed the plate with the fourth run on a double by Denis Menke.

Astros 7, Phillies 0 at Houston (night game):
With Dave Roberts pitching a shutout, the Astros defeated the Phillies, 7-0. The Astros loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a walk to Jim Wynn and singles by Bob Watson and Lee May. Doug Rader singled to drive in two runs. Tommy Helms doubled to plate another pair and Skip Jutze added a fifth run with a single. Wynn completed the scoring with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Giants 7, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Tito Fuentes hit a triple, double and two singles, driving in three runs and scoring two, to lead the Giants to a 7-2 victory over the Pirates. Garry Maddox also accounted for three RBIs with a sacrifice fly and triple. The Pirates did not pick up their pair off Tom Bradley until the ninth inning when Dave Cash tripled, Richie Hebner plated the run with an infield out and Willie Stargell followed with a homer.
