Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 7, White Sox 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Wilbur Wood suffered his second straight loss since winning two games in one night May 28, when the Orioles knocked out the knuckleball ace in the eighth inning and defeated the White Sox, 7-4. Dick Allen and Eddie Leon homered for the White Sox, while Boog Powell had a three-run blow for the Orioles, before the Pale Hose took a 4-3 lead in the seventh when Bill Sharp singled, stole second and Ed Herrmann singled. In the eighth, the Orioles loaded the bases on a single by Powell, walk to Rich Coggins and infield hit by Bobby Grich. Tommy Davis singled, driving in two runs. Grich, reaching third, stole home on a double theft with Davis. Don Baylor then singled to score Davis.
Red Sox 9, Royals 2 at Boston (night game):
Carlton Fisk hit his second three-run homer in two nights to start the Red Sox off to a 9-2 victory over the Royals. Rick Miller walked and Reggie Smith singled in the first inning before Fisk connected for the circuit off Dick Drago. Fisk also drove in another run with a double in the eighth inning for his second four-RBI game in succession.
Tigers 5, Angels 2 at California (night game):
John Hiller, relieving Jim Perry with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth inning, struck out Winston Llenas and held the Angels scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the Tigers' 5-2 victory. After the Tigers started the game with two unearned runs, Frank Robinson homered with a man on base to tie the score in the Angels' half. The Tigers went ahead to stay with a run-scoring double by Ed Brinkman in the second. Duke Sims doubled and Norm Cash singled for another run in the fourth before Brinkman ended the scoring with a homer in the fifth.
Brewers 5, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
Rob Gardner, making his first appearance with the Brewers after being obtained from the Athletics, was the winner in relief over his former teammates, 5-4, when Don Money smashed a tie-breaking homer in the ninth inning. The Brewers took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Ollie Brown hit for the circuit with a man on base, but Gene Tenace came back with a two-run blow to tie the score in the A's half.
Yankees 8, Rangers 6 at Texas (night game):
Homers by Jim Ray Hart and Roy White helped the Yankees defeat the Rangers, 8-6. Hart hit his homer with two men on base in the sixth inning when the Yankees exploded for five runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Rangers rallied to tie the score in their half of the sixth, but Horace Clarke singled for the Yankees in the seventh and White followed with his homer. A single by Matty Alou and double by Ron Blomberg added another run.
Dodgers 10, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
With two out in the first inning, the Dodgers exploded for four runs to start a 10-1 romp over the Cubs. Willie Davis sparked the outburst with a double, Joe Ferguson walked, Willie Crawford singled to drive in Davis and Ron Cey followed with a three-run homer. Davis collected a total of four hits before the game was over and Crawford had three. The Cubs averted a shutout when Carmen Fanzone doubled and Glenn Beckert singled in the seventh.
Reds 6, Mets 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds, after falling behind in the 10th inning, 5-2, exploded for four runs in their half, three counting on a homer by Johnny Bench, to defeat the Mets, 6-5. Willie Mays, making his first start for the Mets since May 8, walked with two out in the first inning and scored on a double by Rusty Staub. The Reds counted twice in their half on a single by Pete Rose, double by Tony Perez and single by Dave Concepcion, but the Mets pulled even in the sixth when Felix Millan doubled and Jim Fregosi singled. In the 10th, the Mets loaded the bases and Duffy Dyer smashed the tie with a triple, only to have Tug McGraw and Phil Hennigan fail in relief. Richie Scheinblum walked to open the Reds' rally, took third on a single by Rose and scored on a wild pitch by McGraw. When McGraw walked Joe Morgan, Hennigan took over and was the victim of Bench's homer.
Phillies 4, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Wayne Twitchell pitched a shutout and Larry Bowa had a perfect night at bat with four hits as the Phillies defeated the Astros, 4-0. Bowa, who stole two bases, scored three of the Phillies' runs, counting on an infield out by Terry Harmon in the third, a sacrifice fly by Cesar Tovar in the fifth and a single by Tovar in the ninth. The Phillies' other run came on a triple by Mike Anderson and single by Bob Boone in the seventh.
Expos 7, Braves 6 at Montreal (night game):
Ron Fairly, who had walked on four of five previous trips to the plate, came to bat for the sixth time with two out in the 11th inning and smashed a homer to give the Expos a 7-6 victory over the Braves. Bob Bailey and Ken Singleton homered for the Expos and Ralph Garr for the Braves. Singleton's blow after passes to Boots Day and Fairly in the sixth put the Expos ahead, 6-4, but the Braves picked up unearned runs in the seventh and eighth to tie the score and forced the game into overtime.
Giants 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A pair of run-scoring doubles by Ed Goodson helped the Giants defeat the Pirates, 3-2, for their sixth straight victory. Bobby Bonds homered in the first inning before Goodson knocked in a run with his first double. After the Pirates tied the score, Goodson's second two-bagger in the seventh decided the outcome.
Cardinals 5, Padres 3 at St. Louis (night game):
With two out in the eighth inning, Jose Cruz batted in two runs with a triple over Cito Gaston's head and scored himself on a wild pitch to bring the Cardinals a 5-3 victory over the Padres.
