Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 14, White Sox 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Brooks Robinson batted in four runs with a homer and sacrifice fly and Earl Williams accounted for two runs with a homer as the Orioles trounced the White Sox, 14-4. Boog Powell walked and Bobby Grich doubled ahead of Robinson's rap in the second inning. Mark Belanger walked, stole second and added another run on a single by Al Bumbry. Dick Allen homered for the White Sox in the fourth, but Williams countered with his two-run blow in the Orioles' half. The Orioles iced the game with a seven-run outburst in the eighth inning.

Red Sox 5, Royals 4 at Boston (day game):
Reserve catcher Bob Montgomery hit his second homer of the game in the 10th inning to give the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Royals in a sweep of the three-game series. Orlando Cepeda homered with a man on base for the Red Sox in the fourth to tie the score at 2-2. After the Red Sox picked up another run in the fifth, Montgomery hit for the circuit in the seventh, but the Royals forced the game into overtime with a two-run homer by Jim Wohlford with two out in the ninth.

Angels 7, Tigers 4 at California (night game):
Although kayoed in the seventh inning, Bill Singer received credit for his 10th victory when the Angels defeated the Tigers, 7-4. Singer was sailing along on a one-hitter until the seventh when Gates Brown walked and Duke Sims homered. A pass to Norm Cash and single by Dick McAuliffe brought Dave Sells into the game in relief. Ed Brinkman singled for another run before the inning ended and Willie Horton added a homer in the eighth. However, by that time, the Angels already had an adequate lead with their attack including a homer by Vada Pinson and three hits by Sandy Alomar, including a triple for his first extra-base blow of the season.

[DH] Twins 7, Indians 3 (day game) / Twins 13, Indians 9 at Cleveland (night game):
The Twins scored four runs in the 15th inning, three of them unearned, to win the first game of a doubleheader, 7-3, before powering their way to a 13-9 victory in the second game to complete a sweep of the Indians. Jerry Johnson, pitching in relief for the Indians in the lidlifter, retired 12 straight batters before walking Larry Hisle to open the 15th. After a wild pitch and infield out by George Mitterwald, who had a homer earlier in the game, Frank Duffy booted a grounder by Jim Holt and threw wildly for two errors as Hisle scored the tie-breaking tally. Rod Carew was passed intentionally, Danny Thompson singled to score Holt and Harmon Killebrew then doubled to drive in Carew and Thompson. In the nightcap, Holt drove in four runs with a pair of homers and Steve Braun connected for the circuit with two men on base to lead the Twins' attack. The Indians put on a power show of their own in the ninth inning with round-trippers by Jack Brohamer, Oscar Gamble and Charlie Spikes. Spikes also homered in the first game.

A's 11, Brewers 1 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics smashed three homers in the first inning to produce six runs and walloped the Brewers, 11-1. Reggie Jackson started the bombardment with a three-run blow. Deron Johnson added a solo swat and Ted Kubiak completed the explosion with a two-run drive. Jackson accounted for two more RBIs with a double in the sixth when the A's had another big inning, scoring their remaining five runs. The Brewers avoided a shutout with a triple by Johnny Briggs and double by Darrell Porter in the seventh.

Yankees 5, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Steve Kline, who had been incapacitated by a stiff elbow, gained his first victory since May 16 when the Yankees defeated the Rangers, 5-2. However, Kline was lifted after yielding two leadoff singles in the eighth inning and Sparky Lyle came in to record his 11th save. Toby Harrah, the Rangers' third baseman, committed three errors, resulting in a pair of unearned runs for the Yankees.

Cubs 6, Dodgers 4 at Chicago (day game):
Burt Hooton, who was staked to a 6-1 lead by the Cubs, was knocked out in the ninth inning, but Jack Aker came in to save the 6-4 victory over the Dodgers. Willie Davis led off the Dodgers' rally with a homer. Ron Cey singled, Von Joshua walked and Lee Lacy singled for another run with two out before Aker relieved. Steve Garvey then singled to add the final tally before Bill Russell was retired. Jose Cardenal led the Cubs at bat with a two-run homer in the fifth inning and sacrifice fly in the sixth when the Cubs had singles by Glenn Beckert, Billy Williams, Pat Bourque, Ron Santo and Don Kessinger while scoring four times.

Astros 4, Phillies 3 at Houston (night game):
Bob Watson, who had hit into two double plays earlier in the game, singled off the glove of third baseman Mike Schmidt with the bases loaded in the tenth inning to plate the Astros' winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Doug Rader drove in the Astros' first three markers with a single and homer. Greg Luzinski hit a two-run homer for the Phillies. In the tenth, a pass to Jimmy Stewart, one-out single by Roger Metzger and intentional pass to Jesus Alou loaded the bases before Watson came to bat.

Braves 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Two-run homers by Darrell Evans and Davey Johnson carried the Braves to a 5-3 victory over the Expos. Evans' drive in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie. After the Expos came back to forge a new 3-3 deadlock, Johnson hit his homer in the eighth inning for the winning runs.

Giants 9, Pirates 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bobby Bonds homered in first inning and singled and scored on three subsequent trips to the plate to lead the Giants to a 9-7 victory over the Pirates, however, two wild pitches also figured importantly in the Giants' winning margin. With the Pirates leading, 5-4, Bonds singled in the sixth and scored on a double by Tito Fuentes. Garry Maddox was passed intentionally and was forced by Willie McCovey. Ed Goodson singled to score Fuentes with the tying run. McCovey reached third and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Bob Johnson. The Giants added two tallies to decide the game in the seventh. Chris Speier walked and scored on a single by Bonds and an error by Manny Sanguillen in right field. Bonds reached third and crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Jim McKee.

Cardinals 6, Padres 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Late throws on two fielder's choice plays enabled the Cardinals to score four runs, instead of one, in the fifth inning and led to a 6-3 victory over the Padres. Jose Cruz opened the stanza with a single and Mike Tyson walked. When Bob Gibson bunted, Clay Kirby threw too late to third in an attempted forceout, loading the bases. Lou Brock hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Cruz and sending Tyson to second. Ted Sizemore grounded to Dave Campbell and the second baseman's throw home was too late to catch Tyson. Ted Simmons then smashed a homer to drive in two more runs.
