Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Steve Stone received credit for his first A. L. victory, with the help of Terry Forster, when the White Sox defeated the Orioles, 3-2. Stone was tagged for a homer by Tommy Davis in the fourth inning, but the White Sox bounced back against Jim Palmer with two runs in the fifth on singles by Tony Muser, Ed Herrmann and Eddie Leon and a sacrifice fly by Jorge Orta. Pat Kelly singled in the eighth, stole second and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Bill Sharp. Forster, who had replaced Stone in the sixth, faced deep trouble when the Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. After a run scored on a passed ball, Forster bore down and struck out both Larry Brown and Andy Etchebarren.
Angels 3, Tigers 0 at California (night game):
The Angels, who had not scored for Nolan Ryan in 22 innings, finally broke their drouth to enable the fireballing righthander to defeat the Tigers, 3-0. Winston Llenas and Frank Robinson led off the sixth with singles. Bob Oliver forced Robinson at second, but Mike Epstein walked to load the bases. Ken Berry forced Llenas at the plate for the second out. However, Woodie Fryman then walked Al Gallagher to force in a run and Jeff Torborg followed with a single to drive in the pair of clinching tallies.
Rangers 7, Yankees 5 at Texas (night game):
After falling behind in the first inning, 5-0, the Rangers came back to defeat the Yankees, 7-5. The Yankees knocked out lloyd Allen and Mike Paul in the first while scoring their runs on only three singles, plus four walks and a wild pitch. Don Stanhouse halted the runaway and held the Yankees scoreless the rest of the way with last-out help from Charlie Hudson. The Rangers caught up against Fritz Peterson, who was chased in the fourth inning, and then posted their winning margin against Lindy McDaniel in the eighth. Rico Carty singled and scored on a double by Alex Johnson, who later crossed the plate on an error by Graig Nettles.
Dodgers 4, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Andy Messersmith allowed only three hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 4-0 victory over the Cubs. A double by Willie Crawford and single by Ron Cey in the fourth inning gave Messersmith the only run that the righthander needed, but the Dodgers added two more on a homer by Willie Davis in the eighth and their final tally on a triple by Dave Lopes in the ninth.
Braves 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Formerly with the Expos, Carl Morton made his first start against his ex-teammates and received credit for the Braves' 3-2 victory thanks to a game-winning single by pinch-hitter Sonny Jackson. Davey Johnson homered for the Braves in the fifth, but the Expos took a 2-1 lead in their half on a bases-loaded single by Tim Foli. In the seventh, Johnson walked and scored the tying run on a triple by Mike Lum. After Dick Dietz walked, Jackson batted for Morton and drove in the deciding run.
Padres 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Although defeated by the Padres, 4-3, on a homer by Ivan Murrell in the ninth inning, the Cardinals ended their long homestand with 11 victories in 13 games. From a low point of 5-20, the Cardinals' record now was 24-26. Two unearned runs helped the Redbirds take a 3-0 lead before the Padres tied the score in the sixth inning. Wayne Granger, relieving Reggie Cleveland, gave up a run-scoring single by Rich Morales and then did not allow another hit until beaten by Murrell's homer in the ninth.
