Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 2, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Bert Blyleven allowed only two hits and posted his third shutout of the season for the Twins, defeating the Orioles, 2-0. The Twins got their first run on a triple by Jerry Terrell and single by Rod Carew in the fourth inning and added their other tally on a homer by Danny Walton in the seventh.
Brewers 8, Angels 2 at California (night game):
With Jerry Bell pitching his second consecutive three-hitter, the Brewers defeated the Angels, 8-2. Bell allowed only one hit until the ninth inning when the Angels scored their runs on a single by Vada Pinson, a wild pitch, double by Frank Robinson and a pair of infield outs. The Brewers piled up 15 hits including a three-run double by Johnny Briggs.
White Sox 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Defeated in his last two starts, Wilbur Wood returned to winning form and pitched the White Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Indians, who succumbed to the veteran knuckleballer for the eighth straight time since August 12, 1971. The White Sox staked Wood to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and added their other tallies when Pat Kelly doubled and Dick Allen homered in the fifth. The Indians scored on circuit clouts by Charlie Spikes and George Hendrick.
Yankees 8, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Four homers, two by Jim Ray Hart and one each by Roy White and Bobby Murcer, powered the Yankees to an 8-1 victory over the Royals. Hart's first homer with a man on base and the blows by White and Murcer all came in the third inning. Hart added his other other circuit clout in the seventh.
Tigers 4, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Mickey Lolich failed to beat Athletics during his 22-victory season in 1972, losing to them twice, but the Tigers' veteran lefthander achieved a triumph in their first 1973 meeting, 4-1. Willie Horton backed Lolich with a homer and single, driving in two runs. Reggie Jackson saved the A's from being shutout with a circuit clout in the sixth inning.
Rangers 5, Red Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
Rico Carty batted in three runs with a single and homer to pace the Rangers to a 5-2 victory over the Red Sox. Jeff Burroughs also homered for the Rangers, while Reggie Smith hit one for the Red Sox.
Braves 5, Cardinals 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Ron Reed, who put the Braves ahead with a two-run double in the second inning, gained a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals. Ralph Garr, who had three hits, also batted in two runs for the Braves. Joe Torre homered for the Cardinals in the eighth and the Braves then brought out Danny Frisella to pitch the ninth in relief of Reed.
Cubs 6, Reds 5 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Rick Monday in the seventh inning brought the Cubs a 6-5 victory over the Reds. Pat Bourque also hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, connecting in the first inning. Tony Perez smashed two round-trippers for the Reds, his second blow with a man on base, producing a 5-3 lead in the fifth. The Cubs picked up a run on a single by Glenn Beckert and double by Billy Williams in their half of the fifth and went ahead to win when Jim Hickman hit a pinch-single and Monday homered in the seventh.
Astros 4, Pirates 3 at Houston (night game):
A walk with the bases loaded and a two-run single by Roger Metzger in the seventh innning enabled the Astros to defeat the Pirates, 4-3. The Astros picked up their initial run in the second when Bob Watson and Lee May singled and Johnny Edwards hit a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, Edwards and Tommy Helms singled and Jimmy Stewart was hit by a pitch. Jim Wynn walked to force in a run and Metzger followed with his decisive single. Willie Stargell drove in the Pirates' runs with a homer and double, but the slugger was thrown out by Wynn trying to score from second base on a single by Manny Sanguillen in the eighth inning.
Expos 17, Giants 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos set a Montreal club record for runs scored in a game while overwhelming the Giants, 17-3. The former mark was 15 runs, also against the Giants, May 7, 1970. Mike Jorgensen and Ken Singleton each drove in four runs. Jorgensen walked with the bases loaded in the first inning and homered with two aboard in the second. Singleton twice walked with the bases loaded and accounted for his other RBIs with a single and an infield out.
Dodgers 5, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
The Dodgers jumped on Tom Seaver for four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Mets, 5-3. Davey Lopes, whose throwing error enabled the Mets to score two unearned runs in the first inning, opened with a triple and, after one out, Willie Davis smashed a homer to put the Dodgers ahead, 3-2. Singles by Joe Ferguson and Ron Cey, around a walk to Willie Crawford, loaded the bases. After Von Joshua forced Ferguson at the plate, Bill Russell lined a two-run single for the Dodgers' winning margin. John Milner homered for the Mets in the seventh.
Phillies 5, Padres 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton, who had a 6-8 record at this time last year en route to a 27-victory season for the Phillies, brought his current mark to 6-7 by defeating the Padres, 5-1. Carlton gave up singles by Ivan Murrell and Nate Colbert and passes to Fred Kendall and Rich Morales to force in the Padres' run in the fourth inning. The Phillies came back with a pair in their half on a triple by Willie Montanez, singles by Greg Luzinski and Tommy Hutton and a sacrifice fly by Del Unser. The other runs followed in the sixth on singles by Montanez and Hutton and doubles by Unser and Larry Bowa.
