[DH] White Sox 5, Indians 3 (day game) / Indians 6, White Sox 5 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader after losing the opener to the White Sox, 5-3. Both games were decided in the ninth inning. In the lidlifter, after Johnny Jeter and Eddie Leon hit singles, Rick Reichardt came up as a pinch-hitter for the White Sox with two out and smashed the winning homer. Earlier in the game, Bill Sharp hit his first major league homer for the White Sox, while George Hendrick whacked one for the Indians. In the second game, the Indians ended their losing streak when Buddy Bell beat out an infield hit in the ninth. Jack Brohamer walked, Hendrick sacrificed and John Ellis hit the first pitch by reliever Terry Forster for a single to drive in the winning run.

Royals 7, Yankees 4 at Kansas City (day game):
Snapping a five-game losing streak, the Royals broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Yankees, 7-4. John Mayberry rapped a homer to help effect the tie before the Royals put together their big inning on five hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly. Freddie Patek drove in two runs with a double. The Yankees picked up their final pair in the ninth when Graig Nettles doubled and Thurman Munson homered.

The Red Sox record was 26-26. Fisk, who also hit a single, had 14 RBIs and four homers to show for a stretch of five games.

[DH] Cardinals 4, Braves 3 (day game) / Braves 5, Cardinals 2 at Atlanta (day game):
Dramatic relief work by Wayne Granger enabled the Cardinals to win the opening game of a doubleheader, 4-3, but the Braves came back behind the pitching of Roric Harrison, who allowed only one hit in eight innings, to win the second game, 5-2. Ted Simmons drove in three of the Cardinals' runs in the lidlifter with a sacrifice fly and single. The Braves had the bases loaded with two out in the ninth when Granger was summoned to face Hank Aaron. Hammerin' Hank fouled off eight straight pitches as the tension built up before flying out to end the game. In the nightcap, Harrison hit a homer in his own behalf to start the Braves' scoring in the third inning. Ken Reitz tripled in the sixth for the only hit off Harrison and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Cruz. Harrison was lifted after walking Ted Sizemore in the ninth and the Cards added their other run after Danny Frisella relieved on a single by Joe Torre and sacrifice fly by Luis Melendez.
