Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 10, Twins 6 at Minnesota (night game):
The Brewers built up a big lead at the expense of Jim Kaat and posted their ninth victory in the last 10 starts, defeating the Twins, 10-6. After starting with a run in the second inning, the Brewers added two on an inside-the-park homer by Dave May in the third before breaking the game open with five runs in the fourth on six hits, including a two-run single by Ollie Brown. Rod Carew and Joe Lis homered for the Twins.

Braves 9, Pirates 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron hit the 689th homer of his career to account for three runs as the Braves defeated the Pirates, 9-7. The Braves, after scoring twice in the second inning, erupted for six runs in the fourth. Davey Johnson homered with a man on base and Johnny Oates drove in a run with a single before Aaron delivered his three-run blast. Carl Morton was the winner, but the Braves had to call on four relievers to stop the comeback efforts of the Pirates.

Cardinals 12, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Striking out nine, Bob Gibson moved into second place on the majors' all-time list with a career total of 2,862 while pitching the Cardinals to a 12-4 victory over the Reds. Gibson passed Jim Bunning and now was second only to Walter Johnson's 3,508. The Cardinals backed their veteran ace with a 14-hit attack, including homers by Ken Reitz, Lou Brock and Jose Cruz. Gibson restricted the Reds to four hits with two of their runs coming on a circuit clout by Joe Morgan.

Giants 2, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Ron Bryant became the first N. L. pitcher with 10 victories this season when the Giants defeated the Mets, 2-1. The Giants scored once on singles by Tito Fuentes and Garry Maddox and a double by Ed Goodson in the fourth inning before Dave Kingman homered in the fifth to supply what proved to be the winning run. The Mets' marker came on singles by George Theodore and Ted Martinez around an infield out in the home half of the fifth. Randy Moffitt saved the game for Bryant, taking over with two men on base and two out in the ninth and retiring Willie Mays on a grounder. Earlier in the game in the third inning, Maddox made a key catch, leaping and reaching above the left field fence to pull down a bid by Felix Millan for a homer.

Dodgers 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Sending 10 men to the plate, the Dodgers scored four runs in the second inning and defeated the Phillies, 5-3, behind the pitching of Don Sutton and Pete Richert. Davey Lopes and Joe Ferguson accounted for RBIs with singles. Bill Russell hit a sacrifice fly and the fourth run scored on a wild pitch. Greg Luzinski produced the Phillies' three runs with a pair of homers.
