Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Royals 4 at Baltimore (night game):
A homer by Earl Williams with a man on base in the ninth inning brought the Orioles a 6-4 victory over the Royals. Both clubs started their scoring with homers, Bobby Grich connecting for the Orioles in the first and Amos Otis for the Royals in the fourth. The Royals, after falling behind, 4-1, tied the game in the seventh on a pass to Fran Healy, triple by Paul Schaal and homer by Cookie Rojas.
Red Sox 6, Angels 5 at California (night game):
With Carl Yastrzemski and Orlando Cepeda swinging big bats, the Red Sox defeated the Angels, 6-5. Yastrzemski homered with two men on base in the first inning and, after the Angels came back to tie the score with the aid of a two-run smash by Frank Robinson, Cepeda hit for the circuit in the sixth. The Red Sox added a tally in the seventh and then scored what proved to be the winning run in the eighth when Yastrzemski doubled, stole third and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Cepeda. The Angels fell short with a two-run homer by Vada Pinson in the ninth.
Indians 5, Rangers 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Two-run homers by Walt Williams and John Ellis, together with a run-scoring triple by Buddy Bell, enabled the Indians to defeat the Rangers, 5-4. Dave Nelson led off the game with a homer for the Rangers, but the Indians went ahead with three runs in the third. Bell's triple drove in Leo Cardenas, who was safe on an error, and Williams followed with his homer. The Rangers regained the lead with three runs in the sixth, but in the Indians' half George Hendrick singled and Ellis hit his homer to decide the game.
Tigers 6, White Sox 5 at Detroit (night game):
Frank Howard, who was batting only .194 as the Tigers' designated hitter, homered off Wilbur Wood with Willie Horton on base in the eighth inning to defeat the White Sox, 6-5. The Tigers, who had failed to score in 22 consecutive innings, ended their drouth when Mickey Stanley homered in the first. The White Sox had 17 hits, but their only extra-base blow was a double by Dick Allen. With the score tied, 4-4, Horton opened the eighth with a single. Wood then retired the next two batters before yielding Howard's first homer of the season.
Brewers 6, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The personal five-game winning streak of Bert Blyleven came to an end when the Brewers exploded for five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Twins, 6-3. With Tony Oliva hitting a homer, the Twins had a 2-0 lead before Blyleven blew up. Ellie Rodriguez, Bob Coluccio and Tim Johnson started the outburst with singles to produce the first run. Don Money followed with a two-run triple and then scored himself on a single by Dave May. After George Scott forced May, Joe Lahoud doubled to drive in the fifth run.
A's 4, Yankees 2 at Oakland (night game):
Vida Blue, who had lost five times in the Oakland Coliseum this year, gained his first home victory of the season when the Athletics defeated the Yankees, 4-2. Blue pitched seven innings and Darold Knowles finished. The A's jumped on Steve Kline for three runs in the second on two walks, singles by Deron Johnson, Joe Rudi and Mike Hegan and a sacrifice fly by Bert Campaneris. Singles by Bill North and Sal Bando around an error added a run in the eighth. Both Yankee tallies were unearned on two errors by Campaneris in the third.
Braves 4, Pirates 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro, working with two days of rest for the second time in succession, pitched the Braves to a 4-2 victory over the Pirates in a game in which all runs scored on homers. Johnny Oates, Mike Lum and Darrell Evans rapped round-trippers for the Braves, Oates' blow coming with a man on base, while Manny Sanguillen and Richie Hebner had circuit clouts for the Pirates.
Cardinals 11, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
Joe Torre and Ted Simmons collected seven hits between them and drove in three runs apiece as the Cardinals scored in double figures for the second straight night to defeat the Reds, 11-5. The Cardinals, who had never beaten Ross Grimsley previously, losing six times, knocked out the lefthander with a five run blast in the third inning, three runs counting on a homer by Simmons.
Cubs 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
While Rick Reuschel pitched a three-hitter, the Cubs broke through against Ken Forsch for all their runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Astros, 3-0. Forsch held the Cubs hitless until Don Kessinger doubled in the sixth. Reuschel bunted and all hands were safe when Forsch threw late to third. Rick Monday then grounded into a double play, Kessinger scoring. Glenn Beckert picked up the attack with a single and Billy Williams iced the victory with a homer.
Expos 7, Padres 4 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos, after falling behind, 3-2, erupted for four runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Padres, 7-4. Ron Hunt started the rally with a single and scored from first base when Dwain Anderson threw wildly on an infield hit by Ron Woods. Clyde Mashore doubled, scoring Woods. Mashore was out at third on a grounder by Hal Breeden, but Bob Bailey then smashed a homer to supply the Expos' winning blow.
Mets 5, Giants 4 at New York (night game):
Ed Kranepool smashed his first homer since last August 29 and Willie Mays, who went into the game with an .094 average, rapped two singles to help the Mets defeat the Giants, 5-4. A double by Duffy Dyer, single by Mays and double by Rusty Staub gave the Mets two runs in the third inning. After the Giants went ahead, 3-2, Kranepool hit his homer with John Milner on base in the sixth. Mays beat out an infield hit in the seventh and advanced on a throwing error by Ed Goodson. Don Hahn then ran for Mays and scored what proved to be the winning run when Felix Millan singled.
Dodgers 8, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
A bases-loaded triple by Steve Garvey, the Dodgers' productive pinch-hitter, produced an 8-6 victory over the Phillies. Steve Yeager of the Dodgers and Willie Montanez of the Phillies each hit a three-run homer, but the Phillies held a 6-4 lead going into the eighth inning when a single by Willie Davis and pass to Ron Cey led to the removal of Steve Carlton with one out. Mac Scarce relieved and was greeted with a run-scoring double by Tom Paciorek. After an intentional pass to Bill Russell, Steve Yeager struck out, but Garvey then batted for Doug Rau and came through with his triple. Garvey now was batting .391 as a pinch-hitter on 9-for-23 with 10 runs batted in.
