Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, Royals 3 at Baltimore (night game):
With a bases-loaded triple by Paul Blair as the big blow, the Orioles exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Royals, 8-3. John Mayberry homered for the Royals and Tommy Davis for the Orioles, who trailed, 3-1, before their eruption. Bobby Grich led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Davis. Earl Williams and Don Baylor singled and Brooks Robinson and Elrod Hendricks walked to force in the tying run. Mark Belanger singled for the go-ahead tally. Blair then hit his triple and Terry Crowley followed with a double to cap the rally.

Angels 5, Red Sox 3 at California (night game):
Although Carl Yastrzemski hit his third three-run homer in three nights, the Angels were able to defeat the Red Sox, 5-3. A double by Frank Robinson and single by Ken Berry produced a run for the Angels in the fourth before Yastrzemski cracked his homer in the sixth. The Angels came right back with the tying pair in their half on a single by Vada Pinson and homer by Robinson. Singles by Rudy Meoli, Sandy Alomar and Pinson provided the tie-breaking tally in the seventh and the Angels added an unearned run for insurance in the eighth.

A's 3, Yankees 0 at Oakland (night game):
Rollie Fingers provided last-out help for Dave Hamilton in a clutch situation to save the Athletics' 3-0 victory over the Yankees. Fingers took over with two men on base. Ron Blomberg, the league's leading hitter, then came up to bat for Thurman Munson and grounded into a forceout to end the game. The Athletics used singles by Bill North and Reggie Jackson around a walk to score in the first inning and added their other runs on homers by Sal Bando and Jackson in the sixth.

Cubs 5, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Billy Williams drove in three runs with a single and homer to pace the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Astros. Before Williams swung into action, the Cubs counted twice in the fourth inning on a walk, double by Ron Santo, sacrifice fly by Jose Cardenal and single by Randy Hundley. Williams then batted in a run with a single in the fifth and followed with a two-run homer for the decisive blow in the seventh.

Expos 5, Padres 3 at Montreal (night game):
The streaking Expos broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Padres, 5-3, for their sixth straight victory and 11th in the last 15 games. After the Padres picked up an unearned run in the first, the Expos scored three times in their half on a double by Ron Hunt, single by Boots Day, triple by Ken Singleton and single by John Boccabella. The Padres bunched three of their six hits off Steve Renko to tie the score in the sixth, but the Expos then broke away in the seventh. Ron Fairly singled, Singleton walked and Mike Jorgensen singled, scoring Fairly and sending Singleton to third. Boccabella followed with a sacrifice fly.
