Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Paul Blair batted in the Orioles' first three runs with a homer and single to lead the way to a 6-3 victory over the Red Sox. Blair's homer followed a pass to Rich Coggins in the first inning and his single in the third scored Al Bumbry, who had walked and advanced on a sacrifice. The Orioles added two runs in the fourth on a walk to Don Baylor, double by Bobby Grich, single by Brooks Robinson and safe bunt by Mark Belanger. Grich tripled and Robinson hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Bob Montgomery drove in the Red Sox runs with a double and homer.
White Sox 2, A's 0 at Chicago (night game):
Although giving up 12 hits, Stan Bahnsen pitched the White Sox to a 2-0 victory and beat the Athletics for only the second time in nine decisions for his major league career. Both White Sox runs off Ken Holtzman came in the fifth inning on doubles by Ed Herrmann and Johnny Jeter, an infield out and single by Carlos May. The loss was Holtzman's first in five career decisions against the White Sox.
Indians 9, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
George Hendrick hit his fifth homer in three games and 10th in 14 games to join with Buddy Bell and John Ellis in slugging the Indians to a 9-1 victory over the Brewers. Bell batted in three runs with a homer, double and two singles, his circuit clout coming on Jerry Bell's first pitch of the game. The Indians sent 14 men to bat in the third inning and scored six runs. After Oscar Gamble walked, Hendrick and Ellis homered in succession. Charlie Spikes was hit by a pitch, Dave Duncan doubled and Chris Chambliss walked to load the bases. Spikes scored on a passed ball. After a pass to Jack Brohamer reloaded the sacks, Bell batted in two runs with a single.
Twins 1, Angels 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Bert Blyleven was the winner in a duel with Clyde Wright when the Twins scored in the ninth inning to defeat the Angels, 1-0. The shutout was Blyleven's second straight and fifth of the season, all coming in his last seven starts. Wright, who also had pitched a shutout in his last previous outing, gave up a single by Bobby Darwin with one out in the ninth. On a strikeout pitch to Steve Brye, Darwin stole second. Joe Lis, batting for Phil Roof, then singled to drive in the lone run.
Yankees 5, Tigers 1 at New York (night game):
Thurman Munson and Felipe Alou each homered with a man on base to enable the Yankees to defeat the Tigers, 5-1, in a game stopped by rain after six innings. Norm Cash hit the Tigers' first homer at Yankee Stadium since September 4, 1971.
Dodgers 5, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Claude Osteen registered his sixth straight victory and the Dodgers won their sixth straight game, defeating the Braves, 5-0. The Dodgers scored their first run in the fourth inning on a single by Bill Buckner, double by Willie Davis and sacrifice fly by Ron Cey. Willie Crawford homered in the sixth. Three runs were unearned on three errors.
Pirates 2, Mets 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
While the Mets were executing an unusual double play in the ninth inning, Dave Cash alertly took advantage of the situation to score and give the Pirates a 2-1 victory. The Pirates began the inning by loading the bases on singles by Gene Clines and Al Oliver around a pass to Cash. Bob Robertson then grounded to Felix Millan, who threw home to force Clines. Duffy Dyer, trying to double Robertson, pegged wildly into right field. Rusty Staub, grabbing the ball on the fly, threw to second, where Oliver had overrun the bag. Jim Fregosi tagged out Oliver, but Cash, who had advanced to third on Robertson's grounder, broke for the plate and beat Fregosi's throw to Dyer.
Astros 12, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
Hotter than the day's 104-degree temperature, Lee May smashed three homers, driving in five runs, and Tommy Helms added a grand slam as the Astros bombed the Padres, 12-2. Cesar Cedeno also homered for the Astros to account for their initial run. May, who hit safely in his 20th straight game for a Houston club record, hit a solo swat in the second and followed with two-run blows in the seventh and ninth. Helms' slam came in the fifth on the first pitch thrown by Mike Corkins after taking over in relief of Bill Greif with the bases loaded. Dave Winfield hit his first major league homer for the Padres.
Giants 7, Reds 1 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Reds, 7-1, to end their four-game losing streak. Tom Bradley started the outburst with a double, Bobby Bonds walked and both scored on a double by Garry Maddox. After Willie McCovey walked, Ed Goodson doubled to score Maddox. Gary Matthews then singled to drive in McCovey and Goodson. The Reds, who had won four straight games, scored their only run on a homer by Dave Concepcion.
Cardinals 4, Expos 3 at St. Louis (day game):
Bob Gibson hit his first homer of the season and 23rd of his career for his own winning run while pitching the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Expos. The Cardinals started the scoring with a two-run homer by Tim McCarver in the first inning and added a tally on doubles by Jim Dwyer and Joe Torre in the third. After hitting his homer in the fourth, Gibson survived his only shaky stanza, giving up the Expos' runs on four hits in the sixth.
